Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah dies aged 90

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has passed away,
aged 90. The monarch died late last night January 22nd
(Nigerian time) in his home. His death was announced in a
statement broadcast on Saudi state TV.
"His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all
members of the family and the nation mourn the
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin
Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1am this
morning (Friday - Saudi time)," the statement said.
Abdullah became king in 2005 after the death of his half-
brother King Fahd. The late king's brother, Salman, 79, has
been announced as the new ruler of the kingdom.

Plot thickens to postpone elections

With less than one month to the general elections scheduled
for February 14 and 28, there are indications that the Federal
Government may announce a postponement of the polls.
The elections may be shifted by six to eight weeks, to now
hold in April. The last general elections held in April 2011.
Daily Sun gathered that the elections might be postponed, as
the military plans a massive onslaught against Boko Haram in
the next couple of weeks. It was gathered that the National
Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki, Wednesday night met
with service chiefs, inspector general of police, director general
of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Professor
Attahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC).
Sources close to the INEC chairman revealed that the meeting
was to find out from Jega the possibility of postponing the
elections till April.
Feelers from the meeting revealed that the service chiefs
hinted that a huge operation against Boko Haram was being
planned, aimed at dealing the insurgents a final, fatal blow.
“The service chiefs reported that they had agreed that there
must be a major offensive against Boko Haram, in
collaboration with Chad, to end insurgency once and for all.
This will entail the shift of the elections,” a source revealed.
To postpone the elections, Daily Sun gathered that the Federal
Government would rely on the constitutional provision that
polls could be shifted during a period of war or emergency.
Section 135 of the 1999 Constitution as amended states: “If
the Federation is at war in which the territory of Nigeria is
physically involved and the President considers that it is not
practicable to hold elections, the National Assembly may, by
resolution, extend the period of four years mentioned in sub-
section (2) of this section from time to time; but no such
extension shall exceed a period of six months at any one
time.”
Daily Sun gathered that Jega was not happy with the
suggestion for elections to be shifted, but told the security
meeting that he would consult with stakeholders.
The INEC chairman had told the meeting that since
arrangements had been concluded on how Internally Displaced
People (IDP) would vote, there was no point shifting the polls.
Dasuki had jetted out of the country to the United Kingdom
after the meeting with service chiefs, where he hinted that he
had suggested that elections be postponed to enable INEC
conclude preparation. Daily Sun gathered that Dasuki’s
pronouncement in London shocked officials of INEC, who felt
that he should have waited for the outcome of Jega’s
consultation before making comments. When contacted on the
possibility of shifting the elections, Mr. Kayode Idowu, Chief
Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, told Daily Sun: “There
has been no official communication to that effect.” It was
gathered that the postponement of the elections could lead to
the setting up of an interim government in the country. For
some time now, the possibility of having an interim
government had generated a lot of controversy.
Pastor Tunde Bakare, leader of the Latter Rain Assembly and
Convener of the Save Nigeria Group, had first called for interim
government, saying it may be the solution to the political
crisis that might erupt in the country over the elections.
Speaking before President Jonathan formally joined the 2015
presidential race, Bakare said the dilemma of whether the
president should contest or not was a major issue the nation
would grapple with this year. He hinged his fears on threats
by those who do not want Jonathan to contest and that of
his kinsmen in the Niger Delta, who have threatened to blow
up oil installations in the region if he does not return to
power. At a Sunday church service in Lagos, while preaching
on the topic: High Profile Scandals (Part 2), subtitled:
Conspicuous Consumption, the pastor said there was need for
an interim government.
Also suggesting an interim government, former presidential
candidate, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, said it was the only way to
address some fundamental issues in the country.
Braithwaite had stated, at a press conference organised by Mr.
Toni Iwobi, an Italian Nigerian and leading member of Legal
North Party in Italy, in Abuja, that to conduct a campaign that
ignores fundamental changes and talk about change or
transformation merely on the basis of change of personnel,
was a disservice to Nigerians. “It is for this reason that I have
advocated for an interim government rather than these
uncertain elections, which those with deep thinking already
see as a failure in the making despite assurances from INEC,”
he said. The politicians advised that merely angling for a
change to Buhari or any other person will not change the
fundamental problem of the country, adding that “our
economic projects and policies will continue to underperform
unless there is structural change in our fiscal federalism.”
Postpone polls for 3 months –NSA Dasuki
…No, we won’t–INEC
By EMMA EMEOZOR
Controversy has started trailing the February 14 date for the
presidential election as key stakeholders disagree over delay
of the exercise.
Speaking in London yesterday, the National Security Adviser,
Sambo Dasuki, called for the postponement of the elections to
allow more time for the distribution of the Permanent Voters
Cards (PVCs).
Dasuki, who appeared before a British audience at the London
think-tank, Chatham House, disclosed that he had met with
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and
advised that it would be sensible to postpone the poll within
the three months it had to legally take place.
“It costs you nothing, it’s still within the law,” Dasuki said he
had told the INEC chairman, Prof. Atahiru Jega. AFP reported
that Dasuki told Chatham House that a postponement would
be “safer for all of us.”
Reacting to Dasuki’s call for polls delay, INEC spokesman,
Kayode Idowu, told Reuters news agency that there were
currently no plans to delay the exercise. “It is not a
conversation of the commission at all. As far as we are
talking now, the date is what it is,” Mr Idowu said.
Renowned Lagos Lawyer, Fred Agbaje in his reaction described
the call for the postponement as a wishful thinking which
would do Nigeria no good.
He added: “The proposal is dangerously pregnant,
unconstitutional and runs contrary to all the logistices/money
so far spent on the election by INEC.
However, a group, The PR Nigeria, has stated that National
Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki only gave the
assurance that the February general elections would be
successful and violence-free.
The organisation stated that while speaking as a guest of the
Chatham House in London, Dasuki said: “The 2015 elections
are expected to be relatively peaceful and violence free. The
Federal Government has taken all necessary measures to
ensure this by making adequate provisions for INEC, security
agencies and by supporting numerous sensitisation
programs.”
He admitted that there were anxiety in certain quarters about
whether elections will hold in the North East and the ability of
the government to ensure that the Internally Displaced
Persons (IDPs) will be able to vote but affirmed in the
positive. “Our answer to both of those is yes. As far as is
possible, we are determined that adequate security will be in
place to enable elections in all the areas in the North East
that are safe, and that the IDP’s will be provided with the
opportunity to exercise their vote,” he explained.”
The NSA who said to have commended the emergence of a
strong opposition in the polity, saying it was a sign of the
growing maturity of the country’s democracy.

APC rejects call to postpone elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the call by
the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, for the
postponement of next month’s general elections ostensibly to
give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
more time to distribute all Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs),
warning that under no circumstance must the elections be
scuttled.
In a statement issued in Abuja yesterday by its National
Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the
call by Col.\ Dasuki, during an event at the Chatham House in
London yesterday, has exposed the hitherto clandestine plot
by the Jonathan administration to push for the postponement
of the polls, using all sorts of cheap tricks.
“Now that we have found the smoking gun, we are urging the
international community, in particular, to urgently extract a
commitment from President Goodluck Jonathan that the
elections will hold as scheduled next month, and that he
would respect the outcome, just as we have said,” it said.
APC said Col. Dasuki was only seeking to buy time for
Jonathan campaign to gather steam by hinging his
postponement call on the delay in PVC distribution, adding:
“They know for sure that if they don’t postpone the elections,
there is no way they can win. They are just terrified.”
The party also called on Nigerians to reject in its entirety the
ongoing orchestrated plot by the Jonathan administration to
postpone the elections, saying the constitutional crisis that
would be triggered by such postponement was capable of
undermining the nation’s democracy.
“After realising that it will be rejected by Nigerians who have
borne the brunt of its mis-governance over the years, after
realising that its campaign of calumny against our presidential
candidate has failed, the Jonathan administration has now
started to play its last card, which is the postponement of the
election,’’ it said.
APC said the importance of elections cannot be over-
emphasised, adding: “Election is the lifeblood of democracy,
the mechanism by which modern representative democracy
operates. It is the only way for the citizenry to renew and
refresh the governing process so they can get the most
benefits out of democracy. Therefore, anyone that tries to
sabotage this mechanism is aiming a dagger straight to the
heart of democracy.”
Government should not tinker with election timelines – Atiku
Former Vice President and chieftain of the All Progressives
Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, has urged that the general
elections in the country should hold as scheduled next month.
He warned that government must not tinker with the option of
postponing the elections.
“Yes, we have a problem with the distribution of PVCs but the
position of my party, the APC, is that since we have a voters’
register, then that should be used in conducting the elections.
I also believe there is enough time between now and the
elections to issue everyone with their PVCs,” Atiku said shortly
on arrival in the country.
The former vice president, who landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe
International Airport yesterday after a medical vacation trip,
said the call made by the National Security Adviser, Col
Sambo Dasuki, for a postponement of the elections was
uncalled for and portended a dangerous signal about the
intentions of the Federal Government to conduct free, fair and
credible polls in February.
Atiku was quoted to have said in the statement signed by his
media office that he is “strong, healthy and happy” to be back
to lend his support to the train of change sweeping across the
country.
“The duty of participating in the process of change which our
great party, the APC is committed to supersedes every other
consideration. For me, participating in this campaign is a call
to national duty.
“It is a duty which we cannot afford to compromise upon and
we must press into the consciousness of those at the helms
of affairs that it is morally dubious and socially unacceptable
to extend the dates of the elections by a single day from the
scheduled timelines,” the former Vice President said.

Police kill 3 MASSOB members in Imo, injure 5

The movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of
Biafra (MASSOB) has condemned the killing of three of its
members by the officers of the Imo State command during the
burial ceremony of late Chief Theophilus Njika, erstwhile Chief
Security Officer of the movement.
This was just as the movement has demanded the release of
the three deceased members, who were shot dead by the
police officers, attached to the Orlu Police division, describing
it as worrisome that the police had become an instrument of
brutality.
In a statement signed by the MASSOB Deputy Director for
Information, Mazi Chris Mocha and made available to Daily
Sun, he stated that on January 16, 2015 Mr. Nnamdi Njika an
elder brother to the late Theophilus Njika, had disagreed with
some members of the family on the actual site where the
grave should be sited.
The statement read in part: “Trouble started on Friday,
January 16, 2015 in Ofeahia Amaifeke in Orlu, when an elder
brother of the late MASSOB member, Nnamdi Njika, who had a
disagreement with some of his family members over where the
deceased should be buried, but in spite of the explanations by
the MASSOB leaders in the area and elders in the family, Chief
John Agu and the traditional Prime Minister, Chief Akpaeri,
lodged a false complaint to the police in the Area Command in
Orlu.”
Adding, that the police on arrival fired canisters of tear gas at
the crowd in their bid to stop the burial ceremony and when
their mission to disperse the MASSOB members failed, they
(policemen) opened fire on the defenseless Biafran Security
Men, killing three on the spot while five others sustained
gunshot wounds and were prevented from being treated at a
hospital in Umuna, near Orlu.”
However, when contacted, the spokesman of the Imo State
Police Command, Mr. Andrew Enwerem (DSP), said that no
such incident was ever reported to the state command.
“I am not aware of any such incident and as the spokesman
of the command, no such matter as serious as killing three
persons was ever reported to the command except of course
some people just want to magnify falsehood,” he said.

I don’t have PVC –Fashola

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has said that just
like many eligible voters in the country, he has been unable to
get his Permanent Voter Card (PVC)
He said this yesterday during the All Progressives Congress
(APC) governorship rally in Ajeromi Local Government Area of
the state.
He said it was unfortunate that many eligible voters were yet
to collect their PVCs and urged the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure prompt distribution.
“I have tried many times but I have not been able to get my
PVC. Even the Sultan of Sokoto is yet to collect his PVC. I
have been fighting them because of the shoddy way the voters
registration went on in Lagos. I know that many people have
not been able to get theirs, but I urge people not to relent.
Everyone should go to the wards where they registered to get
their PVCs. Even if you don’t get it on the first day, do not
relent till you get it,” he said.

14 killed in Gov Dakwambo’s convoy

The police in Bauchi yesterday confirmed 14 persons were
killed in an accident involving the convoy of Gombe State
Governor Dakwambo.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Haruna
Mohammed, in a statement said the accident occurred about 7
pm yesterday along Bauchi/Gombe Federal highway in Alkareri
LGA. Mohammed said three Hummer buses and a motorcycle
were gutted by fire.
The accident claimed 14 lives who where burnt beyond
recognition, he said. Police patrol team attached to Alkaleri
Division visited the scene, cleared obstruction and evacuated
the casualties to Federal Medical Centre, Gombe, he noted.
He said the case is under investigation.
Meanwhile, nine suspects have been arrested for disturbing
the peace of the state during the rally of President Goodluck
Jonathan. The PPRO said the command will not fold its arm
and watch disgruntled elements disrupt public peace in the
state. Groups or individuals desiring and preparing to cause
chaos are warned to desist as any breach of public peace will
attract severe legal consequences, he warned.

Inferno strips filmmaker, Ola Balogun, naked

An early morning fire yesterday dealt a devastating blow to
one of Nigeria’s foremost indigenous filmmakers, Dr. Ola
Balogun, claiming virtually everything that he owned.
All that he had laboured to acquire over the years were totally
razed in the inferno that raged relentlessly for about three
hours.
The fire that gutted his leased house at 11, Aje Street, Sabo
area of the state, it was gathered, started about 2.30am and
succeeded in causing a demoralizing loss to the victim. It also
destroyed his intellectual property.
The fire also spread to the next house, a three-storey building,
wreaking untold havoc on all the occupants. That building was
also devastated, leaving the victims with unimaginable grief.
The only things left for Balogun as personal belongings now
are the shirt and trousers that he wore to bed, as well as his
car and a generator rescued by a kind-hearted neighbour.
The veteran filmmaker, in a chat with our correspondent, said
the inferno had only taken him through an interesting
adventure. According to him, if such things didn’t happen to
man, life would have been too boring for human habitation.
He said his plan now was to hang out and lean on some
friends and family members for survival. Such is life and man
must live on, he submitted.
The 69-year-old talented artiste, who had trained and
impacted positively on many Nigerian artistes, was also
thankful to God and his kind-hearted neighbours who
promptly came and rescued him from the fire.
He was indeed lucky to be alive. By the time he woke up, his
house was already in flames.
Hear him: “By the time I came out, the whole roof was on fire.
At about 3.00am, I noticed some odd noises from the roof, I
first thought it was some rats or so. But I soon noticed that
the ceiling was aglow, which was totally abnormal. These
young men came banging at my door, which I must praise
them for. They were quite helpful. But there was this
particular young man; Doyin Sax Reeds who rescued me,
brought out my car and generator for safety. Before he came,
even though I saw smoke everywhere, I just stood there
watching, I did not really know the next thing to do.
“Everything is gone now – my books, films and other
belongings. Although, I still have some of my books in Paris,
France, I have not lived in Paris for many years now. My
family is over there. Meanwhile, this is a rented
accommodation, which I have occupied for more than ten
years now.”
On what exactly led to the fire, Dr. Balogun said he could not
really pinpoint to the source of the outbreak.
“I can’t say I saw the start of the fire. There was no light
before I slept and I put on my generator. Suddenly, I noticed
that my generator went off by itself at about 1.30am, but I
didn’t come out for security reasons.
His neighbours, who said they did all their best to quench the
fire, told our correspondents that their efforts to bring down
the men of the Lagos State Fire Service to quench the fire
proved abortive. They accused the fire fighters of slow
response.
One of his neighbours, Doyin, who was commended for his
bravery, said if the fire fighters had arrived early, much
damage would not have been done on the buildings.
He stated: “I was within the premises of the next building
about 2.30am when I woke up to urinate. Then I realised there
was a smoke, a thick smoke. Immediately, I suspected it was
a fire outbreak in Dr. Balogun’s house. So, I ran out to call
him. After a few attempts to get Balogun’s attention to no
avail, we had to break the gate. Sighting him within the
burning house confused and traumatised, I tried to shake him
up, and I moved him out. After that, I came back and moved
his vehicle, generator, and gas cylinder away from the house.
“Thereafter, we began to combat the fire with water, soap and
sand, as more people now joined to help. At a point, the fire
escaped into the building beside it, number 9, through the AC
vent, because the buildings were quite close to each other. So,
we got into the other house, woke them up, and rescued them
as well.
“At this point, we called the fire service through the Lagos
State Emergency number 767, while we were equally using the
fire extinguishers in my car to combat the fire. We waited
endlessly for the fire servicemen. Then I had to drive to a
couple of fire service stations, thinking that we could bring
them down here by ourselves.
“When I got to Adekunle fire station, they told me that their
vehicle was not operational at that hour. Then I drove to
another one at Apapa Road, Ebute Meta, where we met no
single person in the premises. Then I drove to the fire service
station at Surulere, beside Barracks, where I met them playing
draught. They were not even bothered. They claimed that
Sabo, the scene of the incident, was not within their
jurisdiction.
“Though, I was furious at this stage, I didn’t stop there. I
drove straight to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka. On
getting there, UNILAG fire fighters said it was not within their
jurisdiction as well, that their equipment was meant for the
school. So I came back, and went to Fire Service at Ojuelegba,
appealed to them, alongside with some of the residents
around here that had gone there. It was then that the fire
fighters of Ojuelegba came down.
“Incidentally, the fire fighters from Alausa, Ikeja got here about
five minutes after the ones from Ojuelegba got to the scene.
“But the federal fire fighters at Ojuelegba could do very little
because they were ill equipped, and the fire had gone far by
the time they arrived. The kind of liquid they brought wasn’t
sophisticated enough, it was just water. Lagos State Rescue
Service, Alausa was the one that now really stopped the fire,
although, not until the two houses had been burnt down
completely.”
An occupant of the razed three-storey building, Mr Joseph
Oscar, lamented in low tones that he was left with nothing
and that he was yet to fathom where his family would lay
their heads that night.
“As I am speaking to you now, there is nothing left for me. All
my property was burnt by the fire. We are all sitting outside
here. I don’t know nowhere to go and I don’t know what to
do,” he grieved.
Luckily, no life was lost in the two ruined buildings. As at the
time the reporters visited the scene yesterday morning, the
first, second and third floors of the three-storey building had
collapsed.
Balogun tasked governments at all levels to procure more fire-
fighting equipment in the country.
When asked if he needed assistance from the government or
members of the public, he said he could not turn a beggar as
a result of the disaster.
“I don’t believe in that. Although, I had insured other
properties, I didn’t insure this one, I must confess. While there
is life there is hope. I will find somewhere to lay my head for a
few days. There are friends, or family members or cheap
hotels where I can put up within the country,” he said.
He commended the fire fighting crew from Alausa and Ilupeju,
even as he thanked one Mr. Danmola who led the operation.
Another sympathizer, who said he was mentored by Balogun
also drove to the scene that night to help his teacher to
salvage his property. But his arrival was too late.
He said: “We had a plan to travel out of Lagos yesterday, but
we couldn’t make it. So, he just called me at about 3.am
today (yesterday) that his house was burning. Immediately, I
drove down within four minutes from Idi-Iroko.
“On getting here, I saw that the house was burning seriously. I
also joined other people in calling the fire service people, and
we kept waiting for them. So it took them about one and a
half hours to arrive here, after which two houses had been
burnt down. This delay is so unprofessional. Fire crisis is
about life and property. I wouldn’t understand why our fire
service stations are never effective in Nigeria. If these fire
fighters were on ground they would have driven down in five
minutes, considering that the road was extremely free during
those hours of the night. I am grossly disappointed at the
slow response,” he lamented.

Again, thugs attack LP members in Ebonyi

Barely three days after suspected thugs attacked members of
Labour Party (LP) in Ikwo and Ezza South local government
areas in Ebonyi State, some members of the party have come
under attack again in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the
state.
The thugs, numbering over 40, allegedly working for a political
party, ambushed the LP members, who were canvassing for
votes in the area, attacked them, injuring one person and
setting ablaze their Toyota bus.
The hoodlums also invaded the official residence of the
Caretaker Chairman of Ohaozara Council Area, smashed
vehicles, carted away valuables and destroyed other property
worth about N5 million.
The Caretaker Chairman of Ohaozara Council Area, Mr. Chaka
Nweze, while briefing newsmen in Abakaliki yesterday, said
when he got the information about the attack, he called the
state Police Commissioner, who immediately sent his men to
the place, who arrested six boys allegedly involved in the
attack.
According to Nweze: “Our boys who went to canvass for votes
with a bus, were coming back to the town when they were
waylaid. The thugs shot the four tyres of the vehicle. There
were only three people in the bus and they almost killed the
driver of the bus. The driver was racing to the police station
but because of deflated tyres he could not continue. The LP
members had to come down from the vehicle since the tyres
were deflated and for their lives. The boys, numbering about
40, came in about five branded buses and the particular boy
that shot at the bus was known. He brought out a pistol and
shot at the tank of the bus.
“An witness, who is an ‘Akara’ seller, saw the boy when he
shot at the tank of the bus and they used the firewood from
the Akara seller to ignite and burn the brand new bus.
Immediately they set the bus ablaze, the thugs moved to my
official residence and made away with a lot of things.
“They smashed two vehicles parked in my residence, destroyed
two televisions, gas cooker, generating set, refrigerator,
assorted wines, about 300 plastic chairs, made away with
goats and rams in the premises and other valuables were
destroyed. What they destroyed and carted away was
estimated at about N5 million.

World AIDS Day: Fayose’s wife canvasses increased help forAIDS/HIV victims

Wife of the Ekiti State governor, Mrs. Feyisetan Fayose has
canvassed increased support in terms of medication and
creation of awareness against stigmatization, for the patients
of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Mrs. Fayose made the call yesterday while marking the World
AIDS Day in the state with the sub-theme: Stigma Ends With
Me, at the Fajuyi Park in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
Noting that the state government was concerned about the
need to support the fight against AIDS/HIV, she said: “Ekiti
State Government is not unmindful of the barriers to the
treatment and prevention of the disease some of which include
stigmatizarion, lack of proper medication and support for
awareness creation, among others.”
The state has been supporting the various agencies attending
to cases of AIDS/HIV and will continue to do so. The state will
particularly employ a multi-faceted approach in terms of
creating awareness, medication and other logistics to prevent
the disease from spreading, treating victims and creating anti-
stigmatization awareness.”
Expressing gratitude to all the non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) in the state for their support on the fight
against AIDS, she urged stakeholders to put in more efforts to
ensure that the disease was eradicated and advised everyone
in the state to go for HIV/AIDS test.
Expressing gratitude to Mrs. Fayose and the state governor for
their support for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
members in the state, Coordinator of the NYSC in the state,
Mr. Tobias Ibeh, said the governor’s wife had been a mother
to all corps members in the state through her support in spite
of the paucity of funds of the state.
Project Manager of the event, Mr. Doherty Olusegun, said it
was illegal for priests or other religious leaders to mandate
prospective couples to go for HIV/AIDs test before marriage.

New fuel price: CSOs urge FG, DPR, PPPRA to closedefaulting stations

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) yesterday, in
Abuja called for the closure of filling stations that have failed
to comply with government’s directive that the pump price of
fuel be reduced by N10.
The civil society groups led by the Executive Director,
Conscience Nigeria, Tosin Adeyanju, also embarked on a rally
from the Unity Fountain in Abuja to the Presidential Villa Gate
and the NNPC Headquarters to show solidarity with the
Federal Government over the reduction of fuel price.
Addressing newsmen after the rally, Adeyanju described as
“sabotage,” the refusal of some filling station owners to
comply with government’s directive and urged the Department
of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the Petroleum Product
Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to close down the
defaulting stations.
“We call on the DPR and the PPPRA to immediately swing into
action and make sure that all filling stations comply with the
directive. We even need a presidential directive to the two
agencies to seal any filling station which hoards fuel or fails
to sell at the new price.”
The coalition of CSOs numbering over 1,000 comprising about
20 civil society groups, said they were behind President
Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in its efforts to alleviate
the problem of the Nigerian masses.
On whether the reduction did not have political undertone, he
said: “It is wrong to think that the president reduced pump
price in order to gain popularity towards his election.
He contested election in 2011 and he did not announce slash
in pump price. This is a global thing and any reasonable
leader that loves the country should do so to cushion the
effect of the current austerity measure.”

Northern youths give Jonathan ultimatum

The national leadership of Northern Youths Leader Forum
(NYLF) yesterday gave a seven-day ultimatum to President
Goodluck Jonathan to publicly apologise to the people of the
North over the death wish advert targeted at the All
Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen.
Muhammadu Buhari.
The advertorial was published by two national newspapers
last Monday on their front pages. It was sponsored by Ekiti
State Governor Ayo Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP).
The NULF said t was saddened over the President’s silence on
the issue. But the PDP leadership on Tuesday disowned the
advertorial, saying Gov. Fayose was on his own.
In a statement issued by the forum’s, National Chairman,
Comrade Elliot Afiyo, said if Jonathan did not apologise within
the seven days and didn’t call Fayose to order, the President
and PDP will lose Northern votes in next month’s elections.
He said, “we consider this act as a deliberate and conscious
attempt to cause chaos in the country so as to call for
election postponement moreso that it is coming from a leader
and a member of the ruling PDP, the silence from PDP and the
Presidency had given credence to this belief that the death
wish advert was actually the handiwork of the Presidency and
not that of Fayose alone”.
The group said, “in this regard we wish to state clearly that
as much as the forum is trying to cool the overstretched
nerves of the northern youths, it is absolutely necessary that
the President personally dissociates himself clearly from this
advert”.
The NYLF also demanded letters of apology to the families of
General Murtala Mohammed, General Sani Abacha and Alhaji
Musa Yar’Adua if at all the PDP will convince an average
northerner to vote for it.
The group also cleared the air on the attack on Jonathan’s
campaign team in Katsina State, pointing out that the truth
remains that those youths that were involved were not APC or
General Buhari’s supporters.
That rather, “they are youths of the North comprising
relatives, friends, associates and well-wishers of the affected
families who felt aggrieved or angered over the statement
made by Katsina State Governor Shema on killing kenkeso
(cockroaches) and the advert placed by Governor Fayose
without any open or public rebuke or chastisement by the
Presidency.”
The forum, however, cautioned the northern youths to eschew
bitterness in strongest term as the act of violence is
unjustifiable.

NCC shuts down APC’s SMS for fund

Barely 48 hours after the Buhari-Osinbajo Presidential
Campaign Fundraising Committee launched some of its
platforms for raising funds, the Nigerian Communications
Commission (NCC) has shut down the Short Messaging
Service (SMS) platform – 35350 – meant to encourage small
donors, especially young people, to do so.
Director of the Committee and Governor of Lagos State, Mr.
Babatunde Fashola (SAN), had on Tuesday unveiled five
platforms, including partnership with five banks for donors
wishing to pay cash towards the fund, the electronic payment
platform involving logging in on the APC domain name
www.apcgmbpyo.org, the SMS, the Ring tone and the Scratch
Card platforms.
However, briefing the press in Lagos yesterday, Governor
Fashola announced with regrets that before the end of
Tuesday after the launch of the platforms, the NCC had issued
a letter to the telecoms operators “not to carry political
messages” thereby shutting down the SMS platform.

Again, DSS accuses APC of illegal registration of voters

The Department of State Security (DSS) is on a warpath with
the All Progressives Congress(APC) again as the agency has
accused the party in Imo State of fraudulent voter’s
registration.
The fresh allegation by DSS is coming two days after the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) exonerated
APC in the accusation that it was planning to hack into the
website of the commission. DSS had, after raiding the Lagos
office of APC, alleged that the party was illegally registering
members. It also alleged that the party had plans to hack into
INEC’s website. The commission, however, said on
Wednesday that there was no indication that its website was
under a threat.
In its letter to the Resident Electoral Commission,INEC, Owerri,
DSS in a letter titled: “Illegal Registration of Electorate by All
Progressives Congress” and signed by the state Director of
Security, OP Adegboye alerted the commission of the illegal
registration of residents of the state who do not have
Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) by the state chapter of APC.
The agency announced that four suspects, Ben Njemanze,
Nnadi Michael, Stella Njemanze and Adanna Nze – were
arrested at Emekuku Comprehensive College, Emekuku, Owerri
North LGA while allegedly carrying out the illegal registration.
The letter stated that “on 9th January 2015, about 1350
hours, at Emekuku Comprehensive College, Emekuku, Owerri-
North , four (4) members of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) were arrested on suspicion of illegally registering
members of the public who are yet to collect their Permanent
Voters Cards (PVCs) from INEC”
The agency explained, “investigation revealed that the
registration exercise is statewide and is sequel to a directive
by the state leadership of the party (APC) and allegedly by
Gov Rochas Okorocha, who distributed registers with INEC
inscription to party excos in all the electoral wards in the
state for onward distribution to all polling booths for the
above exercise.
“The action of the APC is generating tension among
supporters of other political parties who view the exercise as
part of a grand plan by APC to compromise the electoral
process , with a view to rigging the 2015 polls.
“The fear of this category of electorate is further heightened
by the fact that INEC in the state has dissociated itself from
the exercise being carried out jointly by the APC and the state
government.”
DSS recommended that “in the light of the foregoing , it is
imperative for INEC to caution those engaging in such
activities and reject any list that may be presented to it on
behalf of those yet to be registered”.
The security agency alleged that 90 persons were registered in
the Emekuku exercise. The names were attached in the letter
to INEC.
The National Publicity Secretary of APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,
had earlier accused DSS of deliberately working to dent the
reputation of the party. He said it was untrue that the party
was engaging in illegal registration of the voters.

I’ll return Aba’s lost glory –Mascot Uzor Kalu, PPA Repscandidate

Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA) House of Representatives
candidate for Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency
in next month’s general elections, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu has
promised to put up quality representation that would bring
back the glory of Aba if elected.
Mascot Kalu made the promise at the palace of the traditional
ruler of Eziama, Aba, HRM (Eze) Isaac Ikonne.
He said as a young man, who was born and grew up in Aba,
he knew the problems of the city and promised to use his
legislative powers to attract projects that would bring back
the city’s lost glory.
If elected, Kalu said he would have a synergy with the Federal
Housing Authority (FHA) for the building of between 500 to
1,000 units of low cost houses in Aba.
Kalu, the younger brother of former governor of Abia State, Dr.
Orji Uzor Kalu said the aim of the project was to afford civil
servants in the city the opportunity of having their own houses
while in active service or after their retirement.
“If the people elect me as their representative, the first thing I
will do would be to have a synergy with Federal Housing
Authority (FHA), they will come to Aba to build between 500
to 1,000 units of Low Cost Housing and this we believe would
afford civil servants the opportunity to own houses.”
Kalu further promised to pay the school fees of 140
undergraduates from the area for the next four years if he was
elected. This is even as he gave his words that he was going
to provide job for 1,000 youths in the area.
Some traditional rulers of Aba North and Aba South, who
came to receive the former CoS at Eze Ikonne’s palace,
eulogised him for his achievements in life despite his youthful
age, particularly when he was Chief of Staff to the governor
and prayed God to see him through in his new endeavour.
The monarch said he had no doubt that Mascot would follow
the footsteps of his elder brother, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, whom he
described as the best governor after late Dr. Sam Mbakwe to
have given Aba a facelift.
Highlight of the event was the conferment of chieftaincy title
of Agu n’eche Mba on Chief Kalu by Eze Ikonne, assisted by
some other traditional rulers.

Anglican bishop tasks Nigerians on general elections

Ahead of next month’s general elections, the Bishop of
Diocese of Lagos West, Anglican Communion, Rt Revd. Dr.
James Olusola Odedeji has called on Nigerians to beware of
who they vote for, stating that the outcome of the election will
determine how things are going to be in the country for the
next four years.
Odedeji, who made the call yesterday while delivering a
sermon at the 70th birthday celebration of Mr. Joseph
Abiodun Falode at St. Peter’s Anglican Church Idimu, Lagos,
also urged Christians to get involved in the politics of the
country.
However, he said clerics must remain apolitical.
According to him, the more Christians shy away from politics,
the more they put the country at the risk of being run by
unscrupulous elements in the society.
Odedeji also advised Nigerian politicians to put the country
first and treat their political opponents with respect and avoid
willfully hurting the people.
He said: “Men of God should be non-partisan. I don’t belong
to any party, but I preach to my people to choose a very
credible candidate. This election is the litmus test for how the
well being of the people is going to be in the next four years.
You should know that whom ever you vote for is going to
handle your life and that of your children.”
“It is high time Christians participated in politics. The problem
is that we christians see politics as a dirty business, therefore
we allow hoodlums to run the affairs of the country. I don’t
also blame the Christians because some things these
politicians do to get to positions are horrible. They dent image
of opponents just to see that they win. The politicians should
just treat each other with respect.”
Speaking about the celebrant, the Anglican Bishop noted that
Falode had been a committed servant of God and an
illustrious son of Ilesha in Osun State, who has committed his
time and resources to the growth of the diocese, such that it
has grown to be the largest Anglican diocese in West African.
He added that the church would forever be grateful to Falode.
“ With the help and commitment of Falode, we at this diocese,
we are proud of about five Archdeaconry, he contributed
immensely to their height. I still say it to my friends and
people that without Falode, Idimu diocese will not be where it
is today. I remember when I was a student pastor in this
church, he would take me on a tour to give sustenance to
other churches, now I am a bishop, I know how he is still
contributing to the church,” he declared.
Folade, who could not hide his happiness, said “ I am grateful
to God for keeping me alive and will make sure that I dedicate
the rest of my life for the good of the church and all.”

Emerhor to set aside N10bn business fund for Deltaentreprenuers

Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress
(APC) in Delta State and renowned banker, Olorogun O’tega
Emerhor, has promised to set aside N10 billion as
empowerment funds within the first 100 days of administration
if elected.
Emerhor said the N10 billion will be used as financial aid to
assist budding entrepreneurs especially women and youths
within local communities, adding that access points will be
created at local government headquarters for the beneficiaries.
Speaking at Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of the
state during the flag off of his campaign for the February 28
election, Emerhor noted that venture capitalist consultants will
also be on hand to give business guidance to such budding
entrepreneurs.
“We are from the business community and we know how to
turn little capital into flourishing businesses. As individuals,
we have been turning around dead businesses, and we know
that there are many dead businesses in Delta State.”
“We will turn these businesses around to create employment
for our people and boost our economy. We are going to turn
the state around from the under-development that has
bedeviled it in the past 16 years,” he added.
Chairman of APC in the state, Prophet Jones Erue, had
described the governorship candidate as a prudent manager of
resources who has come to right all the wrongs of the ruling
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led governments since 1999.

IPMAN’S 2 refineries ready in 18 months

The two refineries being established by the Independent
Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) are
expected to be ready in 18 months to boost fuel supply and
reduce refined crude price when completed.
According to the National Secretary of the association, Alhaji
Danladi Pasali, who disclosed this in Lagos during the election
and inauguration of new executive of IPMAN Western Zone,
the new refineries are sited in Kogi and Rivers states.
Pasali attributed the late take off of the project to paper
works by the Federal Government and non-passage of the
Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) by the National Assembly,
stressing that as soon as these hurdles were cleared, the
refineries would be ready.
The IPMAN scribe advised the Federal Government to sell its
four refineries to the association for effective management,
pointing out that the government had no business running
refineries, but has a mandate to create conducive atmosphere
and legal framework for the private sector in the oil business.
Pasali also stated that the crisis rocking the body at the
national level would soon be over, adding that the decision of
the court was being awaited to decide the way forward.
The new executive of IPMAN Western Zone included the
Chairman, Alhaji Debo Ahmed; Mr. Kunle Bamgboye, vice
chairman; Chief Mark Alabi Oba, secretary; Pastor Sanya
Aluko, treasurer; Pastor Toye Olayinka, financial secretary; Mr.
Dapo Coker, Mr. Fadomiye Oladele, PRO; Olanrewaju Olaniyan,
assistant secretary; Alhaja Afolashade Oladosu, organising
secretary and Mr. Babatunde Ogundoyin, Chief Whip.
In his acceptance speech, the new zonal chairman promised
to discharge his duties without fear or favour, with honesty of
purpose, accountability, diligence, fear of God and to uphold
the constitution of the association.
He pledged the readiness of the zonal office to liaise with
NNPC to ensure that products are available to the public in all
Western Zone oil depots at all times. Ahmed also promised
that members of IPMAN would be empowered by assessing
various beneficial funds in the capital market to enable them
compete favourably in the oil industry both locally and
internationally in a deregulated regime.

US energy group plans to inject 250MW to national grid

Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has described the
planned injection of 250MW of electricity into the national grid
by Missouri American Energy, USA, as a great and feasible
feat.
He also noted that with the reduced amount needed for the
project, when compared with larger power projects, it would
provide energy quicker and boost the provision of power
nationwide.
The minister who was speaking Thursday at the signing
ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between
the company and the Federal Government said, “we are
desirous of access to power, and Nigerians are hungry for its
supply and as such are ready to swallow any amount of
energy offered to us.”
According to him, the company’s siting of the gas-fired plant
in Rivers State, a hub for gas was a welcome development, as
it would eliminate the threat of vandalism to its plant given
the people’s receptive attitude towards public assets.
He, however, called for investment in smaller quantum to
enable the country quickly realise its vision of “access to
power-for-all” and further advised the company to cash in on
the provisions of the Africa Power Initiative of President
Obama as well as liaise with General Electric (GE) for the
purpose of firming up a buy-in into its recently launched
sponsorship programme for investors in the power sector.
He reiterated his team’s dogged passion in the actualisation
of the power sector’s vision of “electricity for all Nigerians in
the shortest possible time,” while assuring the company and
other would-be investors of every necessary support in the
realisation of their goals for the sector.
Earlier, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Missouri
American Energy, USA, Henry Iwenofu, called for government’s
collaboration in facilitating the execution of the first phase of
its project in the country, adding that the consortium was
already discussing with development partners with a view to
ensuring seamless execution of other phases of the project.

Ahead Niger 2015: 40 Golden Eaglets undergo MRI scan

About 40 players of the national U17 team, the Golden
Eaglets, are currently undergoing the Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) scan to determine their eligibility for the
forthcoming Africa U17 Championship billed for Niger next
month.
The result of the MRI scan is expected to be forwarded to the
Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) by the end of this
month for the registration of Nigeria’s provisional squad for
the tournament.
Since the 2009 African U17 Championship, players have been
subjected to an MRI scan to verify whether they are within the
age limit for the competition.
Niger 2015 will begin on February 15 in Niamey.
Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets won silver at the last edition of the
Africa U17 Championship in Morocco two years ago but went
ahead to win the FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) later in the year.
The Nigerian team currently tutored by former Barcelona of
Spain and Super Eagles’ left winger, Football Emmanuel
Amuneke is drawn alongside host, Niger, Zambia and Guinea
in Group A for next month’s Africa U17 Championship in
Niger.
The four semi-finalists at the tournament will represent Africa
at this year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile between October
17 and November 8.

AFCON 2015: South Africa restructures for Senegal

Bafana Bafana’s assistant coach Thabo Senong has hinted at
a couple of changes when they name the team to play
Senegal, in the crucial Afcon Group C match in Mongomo,
Equatorial Guinea today.
This is a make-or-break match for Bafana who are staring
down the barrel – they have to win to stay in contention for
the second round.
One of the changes was an enforced one due to Ricardo
Coetzee’s injury sustained against Algeria in the opening
match. Mulomowandawu Mathoho, who missed the opening
match due to suspension, seemed to be the obvious
replacement for Coetzee.
The Senegalese showed their aerial supremacy against Ghana,
and Bafana Bafana will have to rely on Mathoho’s height and
skills to repel this threat. Reneilwe Letsholonyane, a veteran
of more than 50 caps, had also served his suspension and is
available for selection.
Senong said the two players will strengthen the team.
“We believe that the 23 players we have add value to the
team. Performance wise we are not happy because we did not
get good results, but we are still going to continue with the
core of the team maybe make two or three reinforcements in
certain departments.”
Despite still being in a rebuilding phase for the next AFCON in
2017 and the World Cup a year later, Senong says it’s
important to reach the second round of the Equatorial Guinea
event.
Meanwhile, Thuso Phala, who scored Bafana Bafana’s only
goal during the 3-1 loss to Algeria, says they have to be
clinical against Senegal.
“I think if we had taken our chances we could have buried that
game.It could have four of five in 60 minutes. So the biggest
lesson we learnt from that game was to take our chances
when we got them.”
Striker Mame Diof, who plays for Stoke City in the English
Premier League, is the danger man in the Senegal team.
However, the Senegalese look suspect at the back especially
against speedy attackers.

Glo Super 4: Anaezemba keen to shine with Enyimba

Nzube Anaezemba says he expects that this year’s Glo
Premier League Super-4 Tournament will be a much more
enjoyable tournament for him compared to last season’s
experience.
Nzube in a chat with www.npfl.ng said, “Last year was a very
painful experience for me. It was my first experience in the Glo
League Super-4 but I did not start or play for one minute.
“The same thing also happened in the Champions League
games Enyimba played before being knocked out. I wanted to
play but I was not selected. It was not the right start to the
season but I am a player that loves to take my chances. So
when the new coach came, he showed faith in me and gave
me the chance to play and I showed him what I can do. So for
this Super-4, my expectation is that I will play”, the diminutive
midfielder disclosed to www.npfl.ng.
“We have not prepared well because we resumed late. The
Chairman said we are not going there to win the cup but to
regain our fitness and prepare for the Champions League. But
for me, I want to go there and win,” Nzube pointed out.
Enyimba kicks off its Super-4 campaign against the Flying
Eagles in the second match of the 10-day tournament.

Esperance unveils Eduok

Former Dolphins’ FC star, Emem Eduok, has been unveiled by
Tunisian club Esperance du Tunis.
Eduok, who had been in Tunis for close to two weeks and had
been training with the former African champions, was unveiled
alongside two other new signings made by the club.
The two other players that were unveiled alongside Eduok
were Hatem Béjaoui and Magno Cruz.
As customary at unveiling ceremonies, Eduok who was the
highest goal scorer at the 2014 Federation Cup and was also
amongst the top scorers last season in the Nigerian Premier
League with 20 goals to his name, was handed the jersey
number (21) he would be donning at his new club.
Before his unveiling, Eduok had been locked in a transfer saga
following claims by a Norwegian Club Sarpsborg 08 that the
Nigeria international already had a pre-contract agreement
with them and threatened to report the striker to the world
football governing body, FIFA, for a breach.
The messy transfer deal cost Eduok a place in the Super
Eagles team that went on tour of the United Arab Emirates as
an angered Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju
Pinnick, sent the former Flying Eagles star away from camp,
claiming he would be a distraction to the other players then in
Abuja preparing for friendly matches with two countries.

Jonathan’s visit to Maiduguri and other matters

Afara Lane
Robert Obioha
08111813041, robobioha@yahoo.com
Nigerian politics is alive once again. Its colour and vibrancy
cannot be missed. Apart from football, Nigerians eat, drink
and sleep politics. It is the noblest art in the land. That is why
Plato wants philosopher-kings to constitute the ruling elites.
That is why he banned lyrical poets from his ideal republic.
The lyrical poets may be the modern day caustic critics of
government. With the heated campaigns, the secrets of some
of the political actors are daily being unmasked. At
newsstands, Nigerians are arguing their hearts out on who
among the two main political gladiators, Jonathan and Buhari,
will carry the day come February 14, the Saint Valentine’s Day
or Lovers’ Day. Jonathan and Buhari are crowd pullers any
day and any time. They have cult followerships across the
country. Just as some Nigerians are diehard Buharists, many
Nigerians are also diehard Jonathanians. That is why the
campaigns are becoming hotter and hotter with each passing
day.
Non-violence pact or not, the campaigns have been war and
war and all is fair in war. While the main issues are glossed
over, Nigerians are daily regaled with tales of sundry
shortcomings of Jonathan and Buhari. These are however not
unexpected. Such jabs and banters at their political opponents
were common in our previous republics. It was part of the
game. Taking to a ridiculous extent, it can be irritating like the
recent death wish on a certain candidate. That jab is
indecorous and does not convey any message, at least to my
own understanding. Nigerians should be spared of such
indecorum.
After months of bashing on his inability to visit Chibok, where
over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by Boko Haram some
months ago, and despite his hectic campaign schedules,
President Goodluck Jonathan courageously paid a surprise
visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, the hotbed and epicenter of
the Boko Haram insurgency. GEJ took some time off after
laying the wreath for our fallen heroes on Armed Forces
Remembrance Day in Abuja and flew to Maiduguri to see
things for himself. President Jonathan visited the troops at the
Barracks and those in hospitals as well as hundreds of
internally displaced persons. The visit is very symbolic and
strategic.
I did not see politics in it. The visit is a morale booster to the
troops, especially the wounded that they are not forgotten. It
is also reassuring to the displaced persons that GEJ did not
abandon them. It is succour to the people of Borno State and
indeed the North-East that the president is with them in the
war against terrorism. With the Maiduguri visit, I think that
GEJ is in a better position to appraise the war against
terrorism and what needs to be done to restore peace to the
troubled war zone. I think that those asking him to visit
Chibok are not serious. If he visits Chibok today, they will still
ask him to visit Baga and other war theaters. The list would
be endless. I have found out in life that it is easy to destroy
than to build. It is easy to find fault than to rectify one. It is
even easier to criticize than to amend what is being criticized.
Criticism is cheap but constructive criticism is very rare to
find in our country. That is why I laugh at critics of GEJ. Put
them there and you get even worse results.
A “clueless” and “incompetent” president, indecorous epithets
used by Jonathan’s critics, who cannot do what the president
has done so far. An “incompetent” president cannot build
roads, modernize airports, revolutionize agriculture, build 12
universities and many schools for almajiri education just to
mention a few. A corruption-ridden administration cannot try
the pension fund boss and cannot deploy the use of biometric
information technology to unmask ghost workers and those
behind corruption in fertilizer distribution. Agreed that there
are other corruption loopholes to plug, our anti-graft laws
should be strengthened to make it difficult for people to be
corrupt. That is the best way to fight corruption and not
necessarily by throwing people in jail.
Another deed of the government that truly deserved
commendation over the week is the reduction in the pump
price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as
petrol from N97 to N87 due to the global fall in the price of
crude oil in international market. By doing this, the Jonathan
administration has demonstrated that it is sensitive to the
feelings of all Nigerians. He has ably shown too that his
administration is caring and has a human face, plus milk of
human kindness. Some critics of the government felt that the
price of petrol can be further reduced to reflect the sharp fall
in crude oil price. Even at that, ten naira is still something.
While some marketers have reflected the new price regime,
others are yet to do so. The authorities concerned must
ensure the compliance of all marketers to the new price with
immediate effect.
I would like the government to also reduce the pump price of
diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel to reflect the fall in global
crude oil prices. If government can do this, the Nigerian
masses will benefit. The reduction of the pump price of these
petroleum products will impact positively on other sectors like
transport and electricity, goods and services.
Despite the non-violence pact of all the presidential
candidates in respect of the 2015 polls, the campaigns so far
are nothing but edifying. The APC and PDP promoters have
engaged in verbal combat with decorum thrown to the winds.
From APC, the chants of change, clueless and incompetence
have deafened lots of Nigerians. And from the PDP, the
singsong of old age, non-provision of WASC certificate,
sickness and feared death are sickening too.
Beyond these banter throwing, I think that the political parties,
especially, the APC and PDP should start getting seriously and
dwell on issue-based campaigns rather than mudslinging and
verbal warfare. Our ears are aching over the noise from the
soapbox.
There are many things they can tell the electorate on the
economy, education, health, power and the rest. I do not think
that most of our problems centre only on corruption and
insecurity. We have more fundamental problems such as how
to restructure the country, the envisaged system of
government, devolution of power to make competition for the
central power unattractive, to stop the “civil war” that attends
ever presidential poll. Corruption and insecurity are just mere
symptoms of a deeply-rooted foundational malaise.
A national conference was conducted and none of the
presidential candidates is talking on how to implement it. Let
our politicians get seriously now and stop the motor park and
market women gossips that pass for campaign messages.

The reduction of petrol pump price

In response to the slump in the price of crude oil in the
international market, the Federal Government last week
slashed the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS),
otherwise known as petrol, from N97 to N87 per litre. The
reduction of fuel price by N10, or 10.38 percent, is to be
effected by the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory
Agency (PPPRA), and Department of Petroleum Resources
(DPR).
This reduction is quite in order. It is good that the government
has joined other major oil-exporting countries that have
reduced the pump price of petrol on account of the drastic fall
in the price of crude oil. This is a welcome development that
had long been anticipated by Nigerians.
However, a reduction of N10 is not significant, considering the
sharp fall in the price of crude, from around $100 per barrel, to
about $48. This has given rise to charges that the reduction is
tokenist. Certainly, the government could have pegged the
pump price of petrol lower, to reflect the new crude price. The
reduction of 10.38 percent is said to be one of the lowest
among the oil-producing nations that are in a similar
situation. Government can still further reduce the pump price
to reflect the crash in the price of crude.
All the same, we commend the government for this decision,
which will go some way in easing the burden of Nigerians. It
is, indeed, a plus for the authorities. However, we do not think
the reduction should be limited to the price of petrol alone.
The government should consider reducing the price of other
petroleum products such as kerosene, diesel and aviation fuel.
It is scandalous that kerosene sells at a far higher cost than
petrol in the country. This is more so as the product is hardly
available below the price of N120 per litre, while it is
supposed to be subsidized by the government, and sold to
consumers at the pump price of N50. Government should do
something to stem the scarcity and high cost of kerosene.
Since the official reduction of petrol price, not all marketers
have complied with the directive. We commend those that
have effected the price change and urge those who have not
done so to comply immediately. Let them face reality and
begin selling petrol at the new rate. Nigerians expect no less
from them. Strict implementation of the change in price is very
important.
The authorities that have been given the responsibility of
effecting compliance with the directive should, therefore, rise
up to the challenge.
The slump in the price of crude affords Nigeria yet another
opportunity to re-examine the contentious petroleum subsidy
issue in the country. We say this bearing in mind that the idea
of subsidizing the price of petrol at a time of low price of
crude oil is not in order. Again, the continuing high cost of
diesel and kerosene at a time when crude oil price has
collapsed is paradoxical and unacceptable. Interestingly, N91
billion was allocated to kerosene study in the 2015 budget
estimates submitted to the national Assembly.
It will be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan increased
the pump price of petrol from N65 to N97 per litre in 2012 due
to high price of crude oil in the global market, but has now
marginally reduced it when crude price fell.
Nigeria, since 1973, has had so many fuel price increases, with
few marginal reductions, including the current one by
Jonathan. In fact, almost every government in Nigeria has
made it a point of duty to hike fuel price at one time or the
other. Gen. Yakubu Gowon increased fuel price from 6 kobo in
1973 to 8.45 kobo. In 1976, the late Gen. Murtala Muhammed
increased it from 8.45 kobo to 9 kobo. Gen. Olusegun
Obasanjo in 1978 increased it from 9 kobo to 15.3 kobo.
President Shehu Shagari increased it to 20 kobo in 1982. Gen.
Ibrahim Babangida increased it several times from 39.5 kobo
in 1986 to 70 kobo in 1991. Head of Interim Government, Chief
Ernest Shonekan, Gen. Sani Abacha, and Gen. Abdusallami
Abubakar all effected fuel price changes that took it to N20
before Obasanjo came back to power in 1999 as president and
increased it from N20 in 2000 to N65 in 2007.
Let government organise the oil sector in a way that Nigeria
will be less susceptible to volatility in the price of crude oil.
We have crude oil in abundance. If we have adequate
functional refineries, we will not be tossed to and fro by the
vagaries of the world oil market. We will refine our own crude
and better keep our petrol pump price on an even keel.
Nigerians are, indeed, tired of frequent fuel price hikes and
contentious subsidy regimes.
The passage into law of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB)
should help bring the desired change in the beleaguered oil
sector. Let the National Assembly and other relevant
stakeholders do the needful to salvage this critical sector of
the economy

Attack on Jonathan: Ijaw youths vow to retaliate

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has condemned in very strong
terms the attack on the convoy of President Goodluck
Jonathan by suspected supporters of the All Progressive
Congress (APC) in Kastina during the Presidential rally.
The IYC which noted that the attack has clearly shown the
violent prone nature of supporters of the APC Presidential
candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, vowed to retaliate.
The spokesman of the IYC, Eric Omare in a statement issued
in Yenagoa while expressing disappointment that APC
supporters could attack the convoy of Jonathan in Kastina,
explained that IYC mobilized its members to ensure nothing
untoward happen when Buhari visited Bayelsa to campaign.
According to him President Jonathan instructed that
everything should be done to ensure that Buhari’s campaign is
not disrupted in the South- South.
The IYC insisted that the Abuja peace accord has been
breached by supporters of Buhari and vowed to relatilate.
The statement reads in part: “We call on supporters of
President Jonathan all over the nation to be ready to defend
any attack on them by General Buhari’s supporters. The
experience of 2011 where several supporters of President
Jonathan were killed without provocation must not be allowed
to repeat itself. General Buhari is preparing the ground for the
fulfillment of his promise that the blood of the baboons and
monkeys would flow in anticipation of his impending defeat in
the February 14, 2015 Presidential election.

I’m the change Lagos needs–Agbaje

Ahead of the February 28 governorship poll, the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos
State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje has said that what the state needs in
the election is change and not continuity.
Agbaje, who asserted he was the change the state needed,
spoke in a recent interview with journalists in the state.
Excerpts:
Looking at the annual Internal Generated Revenue in Lagos
State, can you really say that the state government has
matched the money with the level of development across the
state?
The answer is no. Although I am not saying the state has not
done anything at all. The IGR has moved from N10bn in 1999
to N400bn today. So you have an increase in capital. But then
what has been the other side of it? The question is one, our
borrowing has also increased. As recent as 2007, I think our
borrowing was about 51 per cent of the total revenue but
today as at the end of 2014, our borrowing is now about 113
percent of the total revenue. In other words, today, Lagos
owes about N435 billion and our income is about N389 billion.
So, our debt has increased tremendously. Here people talk
about the rating and rankings, but everyone knows that rating
or not, when you are borrowing at that rate, especially now
that oil has crashed, and we have debts in dollars which we
have to pay, we are in for a tough time ahead.
Again, the IGR has been at great cost to those that are caught
in the tax payment and that is why a lot of people are
complaining about the burden of tax and the multiplicity of the
tax. If there is anybody that is caught in that tax, you don’t
even have a right of reply. So, if they say your income is
N1million, you have to pay the tax of N1million. You cannot
even say it is not so. When you say your income is N1million
and the Lagos State Government say your income is N1.5m,
you are going to pay the tax of N1.5m. There is no right of
appeal because nobody is going to listen to you. So, it is a
very oppressive kind of tax payment. While it is good on one
hand, at what cost are we really doing this? When people talk
about continuity in governance, Lagosians are saying that
mustn’t continue and that is why we have come to address
the situation.
Looking at the social condition of Lagosians , can you really
say the Fashola-led administration has fulfilled its promises
of giving a brighter, rewarding future to Lagosians in this
regard?
On the issue of social condition, how much has government
really done for the people? It is very important that we look at
the social conditions as it affects Lagosians. Take for instance
the BRT buses. The BRT was meant to provide an alternative
to the rickety molue buses. It was meant to ease transport,
make it faster and comfortable, not just for the poor, but even
for the middle class. Again, while the concept was good, can
we say that the implementation has been okay? I am not sure
there is a day that you will drive from Ikeja to Lagos and you
won’t find one BRT breaking down on the road. So, you can’t
say that the people have really benefited from that project in
terms of social conditions.
What can you say about the security situation in Lagos espe
cially in the last eight years?
There has been improvement. The issue of the Security Trust
Fund is something one cannot question. It is a good move but
we still have a situation where crime still needs to be tackled
more. Crime in our inner cities can now be said to have
increased tremendously, even in our metropolis. We still feel
very uncomfortable when we are in traffic even at 6:00 pm in
the evening. These are things that we need to begin to look at
seriously. We want a 24 hour economy, so that people can
feel safe to work at night. That is the way you create jobs
How will you say Lagos has fared in terms of qualitative lead
ership?
With all sense of responsibility, Lagos has suffered from
governance. Lagos has been affected by vested interests.
Everything that has been done in Lagos has to take into
considerations vested interests of few people. It means that if
you want to bring industry to Lagos, if those who have vested
interests are not given adequately, then your business cannot
come, even if it comes, it is seriously frustrated. If you want
to build any high rise in any special area, vested interests are
all there. It affects political life and those who are put into
office. Instead of continuity, we want change. This is because
change is going to bring about bold ideas and new opportuni
ties. Change is going to bring about greater developments to
Lagos. We will maximize resources at our disposal. I think
that is even more important now when we look at the current
economic situation of our oil sector.
The APC has been the party in power for sixteen years in
Lagos. Do you think that the PDP has the machinery to
dislodge that formidable structure at the polls?
The machinery of the APC, a party that has been in power for
the past 16 years, so it is a formidable machinery? But the
beauty of it is that when it is time for change, everything will
work for you. There are people who have issues with the
government of the day. These are market women, professional
traders, youths, even civil servants. What matters now is that
if Lagosians really want a change, how do we use our
structures and what we have to bring about that change?
That is the difference between a Jimi Agbaje on a DPA
platform and the one on a PDP platform. We are not asking
anybody to rig the elections. All we are saying is ‘Let the
peoples vote count.’ Put in place mechanism where people
can have their say on who governs them.

Certificate controversy: Why we cleared Buhari –Onu

Chairman of Presidential Screening Committee of All Progres
sives Congress (APC), Ogbonnaya Onu has explained why the
committee cleared General Muhammadu Buhari for party’s
primary.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, Onu submitted that
Buhari was cleared strictly on the provisions of the 1999
Constitution (as amended).
He declared that the affidavit produced by Buhari during the
screening exercise provided every conviction needed to clear
him.
The former national chairman declared that the person of
Buhari, who had hitherto attended many military institutions
both at home and abroad before rising to the pinnacle of his
career in the Nigeria Army, could not have done so without
passing his examinations at primary school level.
Lambasting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the
controversy generated by the issue of the certificate, Onu
wondered why the certificate had suddenly been made an
issue even when Buhari had contested previous elections
without hitches.
He said: “Really that issue should not create the kind of
problem that we are seeing today in the polity. When this
matter came before us in the presidential screening
committee, we had to rely on the constitution of our great
country to qualify anybody to be president of Nigeria. You
have to be a Nigerian by birth. He has to be 40 years of age.
He has to be a member of a political party and that political
party must sponsor you and finally should obtain education at
least up to secondary school level or equivalent.

Robbers cart away N6m church offering in Ogun

Police in Ogun State have arrested a robbery suspect,
identified as Somoye, who allegedly led his gang to rob a
church (names withheld) in the Ibara GRA area of Abeokuta of
N6 million cash.
The gang was also alleged to have dispossessed congregation
of their cash and other valuables.
Somoye had led his robbery gang to rob the church of the
cash and valuables during an anniversary service last Sunday.
But following a distress call, the police stormed the church
while the robbers were still carrying out their operations and
engaged the gang members in an exchange of fire.
During the gun battle, police bullets hit Somoye in the leg,
while a police Bareta pistol was recovered from him.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer in the
state, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the force had commenced
investigations with a view to ascertain the source of the pistol
recovered from the suspected robber.
Adejobi, a deputy superintendent of police, said: “Somoye was
hit by police bullets and a police pistol was recovered from
him and we have been trying to ascertain the source of the
pistol.”

Jonathan seeks Sanusi’s support for re-election

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday visited the Emir
of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, in his palace in a bid to get
the traditional ruler’s blessing for his re-election bid.
He was in the city in continuation of the Peoples Democratic
Party’s presidential campaigns.
The relationship between the two became strained last year
when the President suspended Sanusi as the governor of the
Central Bank of Nigeria.
Jonathan had suspended Sanusi as the apex bank’s boss over
what was described as financial recklessness and thereafter
directed the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria to further
investigate him.
Shortly after his suspension, however, Sanusi became the Emir
of Kano following the death of the former occupant of the
stool, Alhaji Ado Bayero.
There were unconfirmed reports then that the Presidency
moved to ensure that Sanusi did not emerge as the Emir.
During the Wednesday visit, Jonathan congratulated Sanusi on
his installation and condoled with him and the people of the
emirate on Bayero’s demise.
He told the traditional ruler that he was in his palace to
formally introduce himself, Vice President Namadi Sambo and
other PDP candidates in the election.
“I am here to seek your royal blessing and to reassure the
people of Kano that the PDP is totally committed to
developing the country,” he told the monarch.
In his response, Sanusi thanked Jonathan for the visit and
expressed the hope that his campaign in the state would be
hitch-free.
He stressed the need for all office seekers to go about their
campaigns without violence.
“Democracy is all about giving people the chance to make
their choice and so, there is no need for violence,” he said.
Sanusi urged the people to accept the verdict after the
election and rally around whoever emerged as the winner.
He also advised the Federal Government to intensify efforts
aimed at ensuring security in all parts of the country before,
during and after the elections.
Sanusi prayed for the emergence of leaders that would move
the country forward.
Speaking at the Polo Ground venue of the campaign rally in
Kano, the President said that was why his administration was
committed to producing young entrepreneurs.
He said, “We have said that in those days when they said
Nigeria was at par with other countries, but those countries
overtook us and left us behind. That will no longer be
acceptable by this present leadership.”
The Vice President, Namadi Sambo, told the supporters to
ignore the religious campaign against Jonathan and the PDP,
saying that as the vice president to Jonathan, nobody could
claim to be a bigger Muslim than himself who observed all
injunctions of Islam.
The Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who is the North-
West zonal coordinator of the PDP presidential campaign, told
the gathering that the All Progressives Congress government
of Kano State was a government of deceit.
Recalling the achievements of a former Kano governor and
Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Lamido
advised Kano people not give in to Governor Rabiu
Kwankwaso’s false pretences but to vote for all PDP
candidates.

Falae cautions supporters against APC

National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and
chieftain of the pan Yoruba socio cultural organization,
Afenifere, Chief Olu Falae has warned the people of Ondo
state not to vote for the Presidential candidate of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari
and other candidates of the party in the forthcoming general
elections.
Falae, a former Secretary to the Government of Federation
who hails from Ondo state, said the people of the state
should avoid APC members if they want corruption out of the
country.
Speaking at a rally organized by the party in Akure, Falae
alleged that the leaders of the APC were corrupt, adding that
the APC leaders worked against the people of the south west
when the speaker’s position was zoned to the region.
According to him “Bola Tinubu and his party by their
activities worked against the interest of the South West when
the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives
was zoned to the region.”
He disclosed that the leaders of the APC have no interest of
the country at heart, stressing that all the blue print proposed
by its presidential candidate, General Buhari was just “an
acted script full of political propaganda.”
He noted that, “if many of the recommendations of the
National confab like decentralization of railways control,
seaport establishment and control of mineral resources are
implemented, the South West and Ondo
State in particular would benefit immensely.”While urging
SDP members to support its candidates in the forthcoming
general election, Falae said a lot of employment would be
created for the teeming unemployed youths in the country.
Also speaking at the rally, the SDP Gubernatorial candidate in
Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde said the people of the South
West would benefit a lot if SDP candidates are voted into
government. Makinde, who narrated the history of how the
southwest was well governed by the Yoruba leaders in the
first, second and third republic, maintained that a wheel of
progress would be witnessed if the people support of the
region support SDP.

Northern govs conspire against the North – Sen. Bello

Senator Kanti Bello, four-term senator representing Katsina
North has described the emergence of Gen. Muhammudu
Buhari as presidential candidate of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) as a quit notice to the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP).
He lauded the conduct of the primaries, which threw up Buhari
saying it was a victory for Nigerians.
Excerpts:
How has it been politically?
So far, so good. Though sometimes, I feel disappointed.
As an advocate of Buhari presidency, how do you feel now
that he will fly the APC flag?
It is a good choice. What is left now is for him and APC to
work hard so that he can win. Nigerians have longed for
Buhari to lead them but some people who would never do
things right are against Buhari presidency. It is time for him
and the party to accommodate other interests. I’m happy APC
has shown the ruling party that we are transparent by
conducting what is believed to be the most transparent, freest
and fairest presidential primaries in the history of Nigeria. You
could see that the other aspirants congratulated and
embraced Buhari contrary to the wish of PDP that former Vice
President, Atiku Abubakar and others who failed to win the
ticket would decamp or won’t accept the result if they didn’t
win. It is not in the law of APC that the winner must take all.
Rather, positions would be evenly distributed.
The country has been held captive by the Jonathan
administration. The recent happenings attest to this fact. As I
talk to you, Nigerians don’t know how many barrels of oil are
sold daily. Jonathan encourages his brothers, the ex-militants
to continue to steal our oil. Late last year, this government
approved over N50 billion to purchase stove and our military
is under-funded, hence, the reason they have not been able to
crush Boko Haram. The latest is that Nigerians should be
ready for more hardship, according to the gospel of the
Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister for the
Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala. Jonathan is set to
introduce austerity measures. This bad governance cannot
continue. Corruption is legalised by the present; if not, tell me
why nobody has been arrested for oil theft?
Today, Nigeria is in debt after Obasanjo secured debt relief for
the country and some states are no longer stable. The
sovereignty of this nation is being challenged because part of
this country is no longer in Nigeria. Some people have taken
over those places in the Northeast. The nation is in a state of
war and to my surprise, this does not bother the President as
he goes about his re-election bid as if all is well. Jonathan
never deemed it necessary to address the nation on how he
intends to solve this problem. He has forgotten the Chibok
schoolgirls who have been in the Boko Haram den for eight
months now. And his followers never see anything wrong
about this hence they have adopted him unopposed as their
presidential candidate. What a shame. People are dying like
flies and he goes about dancing and campaigning. He wants
to continue to suffer us but that won’t be possible because
come February, Nigerians will vote out PDP. If it were to be in
other countries, their president would declare state of
mourning and the flag flown at half-mast. This shows that
our moral value is gone; the present leaders are not patriotic.
What Nigeria needs now are people that can bring about
change.
Northern governors recently asked Mr. President to declare
total war on Boko Haram in the Northeast, what is your take?
We are already at war. Part of this country is not in Nigeria
any more. Is it not the duty of Jonathan to secure the country
as Commander-in-Chief? Does he need to be told to declare
war against Boko Haram? Already part of Yobe, Adamawa and
Borno states are gone. Before you know it, God forbid, these
insurgents may enter other states. Right now, Jonathan is
President of Nigeria and Commander-in Chief minus eight
local government areas in the Northeast.
When Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu declared war in 1966,
the area in which we fought the Biafra/Nigeria civil war was
not as big as the areas being controlled by Boko Haram. And
the Federal Government then mobilised the armed forces and
crushed Biafra. So, what we expect from Jonathan is to
mobiliise the army, recruit more youths into the military and
equip them fully so that we deal with insurgency once and for
all instead of playing politics with the security of the nation.
Only newspapers are counting how many days the Chibok
girls have been in captivity, taken away from their parents.
Jonathan and PDP kept promising us that the girls will soon
be back. Any president who cannot keep or fulfill his promises
to Nigerians is not worth re-electing to govern us for another
four years. If we must save Nigeria from total collapse, we
must kick out PDP in 2015. He has no business seeking re-
election because he has reduced the office of the president to
mockery. Since he declared state of emergency in the
Northeast states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, what has hap
pened? I have respect for some of my colleagues in the Senate
but they have not done enough to keep the President on his
toes. Thank God that some are bold enough to call for
Jonathan’s impeachment. It is long overdue. He has
committed a lot of impeachable offences. The Senate
President, my leader, I also have respect for him but, having
fought the war to keep this country together, I expected more
from him as the leader of the National Assembly to save this
nation. There is a conspiracy against the North by the
Northern governors because if Jonathan can’t declare war in
the affected states, why can’t they come together to protect
their states.
The court says Tambuwal cannot vacate his seat as Speaker
for defecting to the APC, what is your reaction?
The Constitution of Nigeria encourages free association
including political association in line with the article under the
fundamental principle of state policy. This particular section
because of its importance, says you cannot pull Tambuwal out
unless you amend it with three quarter majority. And if you are
to amend it, you need three quarters. So, the people who
drafted the constitution see the importance of freedom to as
sociate. The constitution also made it clear that if there is a
problem in the party, which everybody knows that there was a
problem in PDP, a member can leave the party for another. So
the court ruling in favour of Tambuwal is victory for
democracy.
Was PDP in crisis?
Yes, there was and it is still in crisis and would remain in
crisis as long as this set of people remains in the party. If
PDP is not in crisis, where are governors Rabiu Kankwaso of
Kano, Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers, Wamakko, Sokoto, Ahmed
of Kwara, Al-Makura of Nasarawa states. Where is Prince
Olagunsoye Oyinlola, National Secretary of PDP just to
mention, but a few. If there was no crisis, they would have
been there. So, you don’t need a soothsayer to tell you that
PDP is in crisis. The bottom line is that the constitution
allows any member to leave his party if
