Algerian army ‘kills jihadist behind HerveGourdel beheading’

Algeria’s defence ministry says troops
have killed the leader of a jihadist militant
group which kidnapped and beheaded
French tourist Herve Gourdel.
Abdelmalek Gouri and two associates
were shot dead late on Monday in the
town of Isser, a statement said.
His group, Jund al-Khilafa (Soldiers of the
Caliphate), pledged allegiance to Islamic
State (IS) in mid-September.
Days later, it seized Mr Gourdel in the
Djurdjura mountains and killed him in
response to French air strikes on IS.
The Algerian army subsequently launched
a major operation to track down members
of Jund al-Khilafa, which has seen
several of them killed.
The defence ministry statement said the
operation in Isser began at 22:30 (21:30
GMT) on Monday after intelligence was
received and a vehicle carrying militants
was seen entering the town, 60km (37
miles) east of Algiers.
After Gouri and the two other members of
Jund al-Khilafa were killed, troops
recovered two automatic rifles, explosive
belts, a large quantity of ammunition and
mobile phones, it added.
No other people were reported injured in
the clashes.
On Saturday, the army announced that it
had killed three other militants in a
mountainous area near the village Sidi
Daoud, 25km (15) miles to the north-west
of Isser. It said one of them was a
“dangerous criminal”.
And on 11 December, the justice ministry
said soldiers had killed two members of
Jund al-Khilafa implicated in the murder
of Mr Gourdel.
The newspaper Ennahar cited security
sources as saying the group mostly
comprised former members of al-Qaeda
in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
On 14 September, Jund al-Khilafa broke
away from AQIM, accusing it of “deviating
from the true path”, and pledging
allegiance to IS leader and self-
proclaimed “caliph” Abu Bakr al-
Baghdadi.
The group kidnapped Mr Gourdel in
Djurdjura National Park on 21 September.
Three days later it published a video that
appeared to show him being beheaded
after its demand that France end its air
strikes on IS positions in Iraq was not
met.
Gouri, also known as Khaled Abou
Slimane, was once considered the “right-
hand man” of AQIM leader Abdelmalek
Droukdel and was part of the cell behind
suicide attacks on the government’s
headquarters and the UN compound in
Algiers in 2007, Ennahar said.
He was also behind an attack in
Iboudrarene in April that left 11 soldiers
dead, the newspaper added.

This young girl needs help to fund hereducation

19 years-old Augustina Orike from
Omoku in Rivers State is in distress. Her
dream of forging ahead with her
education and hope of a bright future is
being threatened by lack of the required
funds.
As she sat across the table at The Sun
office in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where
she had come to explain her plight, the
anguish she is presently going through
could not be masked.
Augustina was full of joy few months ago
when she secured admission to study
Computer Science at Delta State
Polytechnic, Ozoro. But the joy is now
short-lived because since August 2014
she has not been able to pay the school
fees and is now faced with the risk of
havig her education dream aborted.
According to her, her parents are
separated and her father whom she
claimed lives in Lagos has abandoned
their mother to cater for the seven of
them. She said her mother cannot raise
the funds and wants good spirited people
to come to her aid.
“My name is Augustine Orike, I am from
Omoku in Rivers State. I am 19-years-
old. I got admission into Delta State
Polytechnic, Ozoro but since the
admission I have not been able to raise
the required funds. My fear is that I might
lose the admission.
“My parents are no longer together. My
father is in Lagos but has refused to cater
for us. My mother is poor and she has
been struggling to take care of six
children and there is no help. We are
seven and some of us are with my mother
and others with my aunt. I am presently
staying with my brother’s wife. The
problem now is that they have threatened
to withdraw the admission because I have
not paid the school fees and other
registration fees. The whole money is
N130,000 but if I can get like N70.000 or
N80,000 to pay the school fees I would be
okay for now. I want to go to school to
secure my future. Please people should
help to realise my goal in life”

At Christmas, Pastor Adeboye bringshope to Kirikiri Prison inmates

Sunday, December 21, 2014, would
remain evergreen in the minds of inmates
and officials of the Kirikiri Maximum
Security Prison, Apapa, Lagos. It was the
day the General Overseer of the Redeemed
Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A.
Adeboye, called at the facility and made
prophetic declaration of hopes to the
inmates and officials of the prison. Some
donations were also made to the inmates.
Like the biblical Balm of Gilead, the
prophetic words of encouragement that
were uttered to inmates by the respected
man of God could be said to be fully
comforting and emotionally soothing.
Some prison officials, who pleaded
anonymity, confessed to the reporter: “It
was a calm moment today as ever, being
under Daddy G.O. Every hurting inmate
got some relief, including other
participants like us.”
Upon arrival at the facility, Pastor
Adeboye was welcomed by a team of top
prison officials, including the Deputy
Controller of Prison, M.O.O. Olaniran, as
well as the accompanying pastorate of the
RCCG. The man of God thereafter
proceeded to the commissioning of solar
lights, as part of activities that marked the
2014 Kirikiri Maximum Prison’s end-of
the-year service.
Pastor Adeboye was similarly welcomed
to the church service by Pastor-in-charge
of Liberty Church, Tunwashe Kabiru, who
appreciated the kindness and
philanthropy of Pastor Adeboye over the
years to the prison service. He listed some
of Pastor Adeboye ‘s kind gestures to
include the renovation and equipment of
the National Open University of Nigeria
(NOUN) building in 2010, payment of the
tuition of ten of NOUN students since
2011 as well as the renovation with full
equipment of the computer class in 2012,
among other laudable acts of
philanthropy.
Pastor Kabiru stated further that the
sermons and weekly visitations to RCCG
parishes by Pastor Adeboye are really
causing a dramatic positively turnarounds
in the lives of many physically and
spiritually. asserting that, like Oliver
Twist, “we need more.”
Pastor Kabiru listed a number of other
requests to the revered man of God,
including a plea for the renovation and
re-equipment of vocational workshops,
especially in the tailoring, shoe making
and carpentry departments.
He explained further: “An inmate who
sustained a fracture on his leg while
playing football on the field, requires a
surgical operation that would cost about
N300,000. We need your help Baba to do
this.
“Above all, uppermost in the heart of
every inmate is freedom. We therefore
plead that you solicit on our behalf to the
state governors, especially the South-
West governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo,
Osun Ondo, Ekiti, Edo and others, most
especially for the condemned convicts.
“Once again, we desire that this event
comes up annually, rather than once in
two years,” the pastor pleaded.
While listening to testimonies of some
inmates, the attentive congregation
appeared quite sober in apparent
reflection. While some members of the
congregation shook their heads in pity,
some others kept mouths agape,
obviously unable to conceal their utter
shock, especially on the fate of some
inmates that had spent many years
awaiting trial.
A good-looking and well-dressed inmate,
identified simply as John, (other names
withheld by us) who shared his story
while giving his testimony said: “Since I
have been in this confinement, no family
member has checked on me. I have been
abandoned to my fate. I’m glad for
meeting good parenthood in our fathers
and mothers here.”
Another inmate, David (other names
withheld by us) equally narrated his story.
He stated: “I have been in detention here
since 2010. For four years, I was not
tried, until recently. Then I was sentenced
to a three-year jail term. I’m glad because
my mother and wife have stood by me,
and have encouraged me to keep on, as
three years is not so much a long
duration again, having waited for some
four years.”
In his reaction, Pastor E.A. Adeboye said
all the requests made by the inmates
through the pastor in charge of Liberty
Church, had been granted and would be
sorted in due course. He spoke on the
inmate that had been in detention for four
years, and promised that the RCCG legal
unit would look into the issue to
determine if his detention of four years
had not covered for his three-year
sentence.
The General Overseer recollected some of
his efforts over the years in pleading on
behalf of the inmates, especially convicted
inmates. He said: “Some time ago when I
was here, I was touched by a young
man’s story. The young man had slapped
his friend during an argument, resulting in
the friend’s death. For this reason, he was
arrested and detained for 27 years
without trial.
“The man had told me then: “Because
execution is done at the early hour of the
day, I had waited till 4.00am every
morning before sleeping to be sure it was
not my turn. I waited for 27 years.’ I could
not imagine the trauma this man must
have passed through awaiting his turn for
death for 27 years. Because of this, I
spoke with the then President Obasanjo,
who directed me to the former governor,
Tinubu, who also directed me to the Chief
Judge. Eventually, something was done I
believe. Same way, we will not relent in
interceding and pleading on your behalf
before the authorities,” Pastor Adeboye
assured.
The RCCG General Overseer charged the
inmates to put all their trust in God only,
as humans could fail anytime. “The friend
you call your friend is not really your
friend until you get into real trouble. Only
God will not abandon you,” he noted.
He congratulated the inmates whose lives
had witnessed redemption. He
emphasised that “there are many
prisoners out there. I know a number of
rich men who cannot sleep in the night,
and who cannot share their stories with
anyone. Hence, they are imprisoned
within.
A popular chorus: You don’t have to
worry, you don’t have to fear… was
rendered by the RCCG choir during the
event, even as some members of the
congregation shed tears as the song was
being sung.

Long wait for 2015 budget

Finally, after three revisions of the
2015-2017 Medium Term Expenditure
Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper
(MTEF/FSP), President Goodluck
Jonathan laid the 2015 Appropriation Bill
before the Senate last Wednesday.
It was devoid of any fanfare or excitement
hitherto associated with such exercise. In
fact, the president didn’t even put up any
appearance. The budget was laid on his
behalf by his Coordinating Minister of the
Economy and Finance Minister, Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala.
That would be the second time in a row
that the president would, in a departure
from convention, not physically present
the budget before lawmakers. The
convention since 1999 had been that a
sitting president would seize the
opportunity of the budget presentation to
present the roadmap, which his
government t would undertake in the next
12 months.
This time around, the MTEF/FSP, which
ought to have been considered and
transmitted back to the president, upon
which the new budget would then be
prepared, had just arrived the National
Assembly when the Finance Minister
brought the budget!
Senate President David Mark has already
given the direction in which the budget
would go. Shortly before the chamber
went on its Yuletide recess, Mark directed
the appropriate committees on the budget
to start work immediately and also
announced that on resumption, two days
would be devoted to debating the budget.
Perish any thought of a new national
budget this year though as work would
only start on the budget in January 2015.

I-G orders deployment of strike units forChirstmas

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr
Suleiman Abba, has ordered a nationwide
deployment of police strike units for a
water-tight security throughout the
Christmas and New Year celebrations.
This was contained in a statement issued
by the Force Spokesman, Mr Emmanuel
Ojukwu, yesterday, in Abuja.
The affected units are Police Mobile Force,
Special Protection Unit, Counter-
Terrorism Unit, Explosive Ordinance
Department, Dog Section and Mounted
Troops.
Abba also ordered the police air wing to
carry out air surveillance patrols, while
the Marine Police should ensure a
sustained patrol of all the water ways.
He directed all Zonal Assistant
Inspectors-General of Police and
Commissioners of Police in charge of
state commands to put in place extended
“police visibility and patrols.”
Acting Police IG Sulaiman Abba
The IG enjoined them to do this taking
into consideration the peculiar security
situation to enable them protect the
citizens as they celebrate.
Abba advised operators of public places
such as hotels, viewing and recreation
centres to be vigilant and ensure that they
properly screen all visitors/users of their
facilities during the period.
“Members of the public are also urged to
report any suspicious movement in their
areas to the police,” he charged.
Police begin sale of admission forms
Meanwhile, the force has announced the
commencement of sales of forms for
admission into its degree awarding
institution in Kano, the Police Academy,
Wudil.
A statement signed by the force
spokesman, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu,
yesterday, said the sales of the forms
began on Nov. 12 and was expected to
end on March 31, 2015.

APC, PDP disagree over Fayose’sstomach infrastructure programme

Ado-Ekiti —The All Progressives Congress,
APC and the Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, in Ekiti State have disagreed over
the implementation of the concept of
stomach infrastructure by Governor Ayo
Fayose.
According to the state Publicity Secretary
of APC, Taiwo Olatubosun, yesterday, the
governor has turned Ekiti people to
beggars by doling out to them chicken,
rice and money, while the PDP
condemned the APC for blindly copying
the implementation of the programme
which they earlier condemned.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Peter Ayodele
Fayose distributing chicken, rice and
money to the widow and aged in Ado Ekiti
for the Christmas under the stomach
infrastructure programme of his
administration
According to a statement by PDP state
secretary, Dr. Tope Aluko in Ado Ekiti,
yesterday, the APC National Leader,
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has adopted the
stomach infrastructure principle despite
the vehement criticism by members of the
APC.
Aluko who described members of APC as
deceitful people who will not see anything
tangible in any programme or policy not
initiated by them.
But APC image maker said Fayose was
implementing social infrastructure
programme to deceive the people of the
state that he loves them.
However, the PDP said the APC
implemented the programme after widely
condemning it publicly.
“It is hypocrisy at its peak to do what you
abuse someone else of doing,”
Aluko said in a statement issued
yesterday, that the Fayose-led
government would never shy away from
the people’s welfare.
He said Governor Fayose’s concept of
stomach infrastructure had been further
justified by its adoption by the APC
National Leader and former governor of
Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu, who
personally distributed 2,000 bags of rice,
vegetable oil, sugar and a little cash gift
to people from various parts of Lagos
State on Sunday.
Ekiti speaker alleges
threat by Fayose
Meantime, the Speaker of Ekiti State
House of Assembly, Dr. Adewale Omirin,
has raised an alarm over alleged plan by
Governor Fayose to set thugs after the 19
APC lawmakers all over the state for
humiliation.
The speaker also alleged plans by the
governor to hire people to send threat
message to him in the name of the
lawmakers to enable him rope in the
members of Ekiti House of Assembly for
arrest.
Omirin said in statement by his Special
Adviser on Media, Wole Olujobi, that
intelligence report suggested that
government-backed hoodlums have been
sent to the streets to look out for
lawmakers for attacks.
“Part of the game-plan is to smash the
Toyota Camry cars officially allocated to
the members, which they are offsetting
through deductions in their salaries. In
cases where practicable, the cars are to
be forcefully snatched from the
lawmakers and then create a robbery
scenario,” the speaker said.
Omirin said the governor was trying to re-
enact a recent scenario where a member
of PDP who the governor robbed of
primary victory, Cyril Fasuyi, was framed
up for sending threat message to the
governor to create condition for his arrest.
Police on Assembly crisis
In another development, the Ekiti State
Police Command has allayed fears of the
All Progressive Congress, APC, lawmakers
in the state House of Assembly, saying it
will not dabble into the crisis rocking the
House
The embattled speaker, Hon. Adewale
Omirin on behalf of other APC lawmakers
has raised an alarm that Governor Ayo
Fayose has instructed the Police to arrest
them, following the holding of a separate
parliamentary session in an undisclosed
location last week.
