GQ South Africa got to chat with Mai Atafo in preparation for the event and Mai talks about his brand as well as his forthcoming Spring/Summer 2015 collection.

Read excerpts from his interview below!
GQ: Talk us through some of the finer nuances of your collection. What are you most excited to show?
Mai: From my SS15 collection I am very excited about the use of soft colours, which tell a relatable fashion story that is very in line with the core essence of my menswear brand. I believe this collection will drive a new trend in menswear.  I have always been of the opinion that men can wear colours and look amazing. However, that said I am actually more excited about the womenswear. It takes inspiration from traditional native menswear from the south-south region of Nigeria, with some womenswear influences from south-west and northern parts of Nigeria.

What Would you do If you Found out Your Husband is Secretly Married to another Woman?

Mr and Mrs Gibney
BellaNaijarians, what would you do if you found out that your beloved husband is secretly married to another woman?

This was the question 55-year-old British woman Yvonne Gibney, asked herself after she found at that her 49-year-old husband, Maurice, of 17 years secretly married another woman.
She found out after seeing pictures of Maurice kissing his secret bride at the wedding on Facebook, Daily Mail reports. The couple have two children together.
Yvonne first started to hear about his husband’s secret wife via rumours floating around on Facebook. But she dismissed the rumours, refusing to believe that Maurice could betray her.
Her worst fears came true when she saw pictures of the wedding ceremony.
The wedding which cost £45,000 took place at an exotic beach in Oman. Maurice, who is an oil contractor, had been away for work in the Arab state. Apparently, it was during his work trip that the wedding took place.
According to reports, the bride is 46-year-old Suzanne Prudhoe, a teacher whom Maurice had been having an affair with for 18 months.
Yvonne found out that her husband had lied to his family, telling them that they had gotten a divorce, and that he was free to marry another woman.
Maurice’s mom reportedly walked him down the aisle , and the step daughter was a bridesmaid.
Yvonne took her husband to court for bigamy, but instead of sending him to jail, the judge gave him a 6-month sentence, which was suspended for two years.
“I believed in our marriage and shared values, trust, love and respect for each other, a sense of morality.
I loved him unconditionally and believed that love was reciprocated. I simply don’t have the words to effectively convey the pain and hurt and sense of betrayal,” said Yvonne.
She also recounted that she had met her husband and fallen in love with him 20 years ago while working in Nigeria. Following his infidelity, they are now divorced

Dear LIB readers: My man has destroyed my back with his nails...

From a female LIB readerThere are so many scars on my body, especially my back and it's all thanks to my boyfriend. We have been dating for about nine months but I am beginning to be sick of having sex with him. You see every time he's about to have an orgasm during sex, he digs his nails into my back depending on his position and sometimes peels the skin off. His orgasm is so intense that he is not even aware of how much he is hurting me until his body is relaxed. We have talked about this many times and he promised to be more careful but it hasn't stopped as it looks like it's out of his hands. I have refused to have sex with him for about two weeks because the last time we did it he literally drew blood from my side. Is there anything we can do? I can't continue having sex with him if he can't stop hurting me at the end. I love dude and I want to be with him but what can I do to stop this? Are there other women experiencing this?

Money Matters with Nimi: Breast Cancer Awareness

At the start of 2013 all seemed to be going well for Kemi and her family. Their first child had just started university, her husband’s business was beginning to turn around after a difficult year, and they had finally completed their own home and recently moved in.
It seemed like it was going to be a good year. In April, Kemi noticed a small but palpable lump on her left breast. Her doctor referred her to a teaching hospital and a biopsy confirmed that she had stage three aggressive breast cancer.

Kemi had surgery in May at a cost of N100,000 to remove the lump and she is now having a course of chemotherapy which is costing her N40,000 each week. She will need six sessions in the first instance. She will require a second operation in due course, followed by radiotherapy for which a down-payment of N100,000 is required. Beyond this she is told that she will require treatment for at least five years for ultrasound scans, blood tests, kidney and liver function tests, chest x-rays, and so on; some of these will have to be repeated.
Members of Kemi’s extended family rallied round as best they could but now the exorbitant costs over a prolonged period of time have made it impossible for them to continue to contribute as they did in the early stages of her treatment. Her husband has no choice but to put their new home up for sale to release badly needed funds to try to save her life.
October, “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. It affords us an opportunity to focus on this dreaded and devastating disease that appears to be becoming more and more prevalent. While many people are aware of breast cancer, many neglect to actually take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and when there is a much greater chance of survival.
One of the key messages for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United Kingdom is that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Whilst we are not absolutely certain of the statistics in Nigeria, it is alarming that increasingly we all seem to have lost or know some one who has been badly affected by this killer disease.
Most people tend to overlook the financial implications of a serious illness. In our society it is seen as a taboo to even consider the possibility that one could become really ill let alone the fact that one could die; it is like tempting fate. Yet statistics indicate that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Far too many people ignore the need for insurance until a major mishap or setback occurs; it is only then that the impact of inadequate insurance coverage is glaring. No matter how meticulous you are with your finances, failure to purchase adequate insurance can impair your financial future and put you or your loved ones in a desperate situation in an instant.
How healthy are you? If you or anyone in your family were to ever become gravely ill, can you afford the best medical treatment available? Do you have health insurance in place? Health insurance covers some of the cost of treating the insured person’s illnesses or injuries. In some cases, it pays for preventive care, such as annual physicals and diagnostic tests. You may have health insurance as an employee benefit from your job or you may also buy individual health insurance directly from an insurance company. You then pay premiums to purchase coverage and the insurer is obliged to pay some or all of your healthcare costs, based on the terms of your contract.
Health insurance varies significantly from plan to plan. Generally, most plans will cover a combination or hospitalization, prescription drugs, and treatment for serious illnesses. Dire medical conditions are difficult enough to cope with; if you become ill, the last thing you need to have to worry about is mounting financial challenges.
As morbid as it sounds, can your loved ones afford to lose you? Could your family or dependants pay for the funeral, organize the family finances, service any outstanding debt and continue in their current standard of living? Or, would they face extreme hardship in the event of the death of their breadwinner? The main objective of life insurance is to replace income that would be lost should the policyholder become incapacitated or die.
At some point in time you might need to call upon some form of insurance. Whilst insurance will not eliminate the risk of loss or damage to property, injury, illness or death, it does relieve the insured of at least some of financial losses these risks bring. The cost of coverage of all these scenarios is far lower than if you were to have to service them if they do indeed arise. If you don’t have the necessary insurance cover, do make this one of your financial priorities before the end of this year.
If you can afford it, try to put a solid health insurance policy in place that can help you have access to the health care you will need if you are diagnosed with breast cancer or some other deadly disease. It is imperative that you read the fine print and understand your coverage just make sure it will actually provide the necessary coverage should you ever need it.
Critical illness cover is a relatively recent addition to the life insurance industry. It was never intended to replace health, life or disability insurance. Instead, its purpose is to fill the gap in existing medical insurance coverage to pay for illness and specific kinds of treatment not ordinarily covered by traditional insurance or for any other expenses the insured wants to spend the lump sum on.
A family history of a certain illness may be enough for the company to exclude that disease. Most policies are priced based on the age, gender and family history so the more medical questions you can honestly answer no to, the better.
Of course nothing is more important than early detection through regular mammograms and clinical breast exams. Since breast cancer is a disease that affects so many women, all women should make sure that they have regular screening to improve their chances of early detection. Take the necessary, precautions, protect yourself by having an early detection plan in place and encourage your daughters, relatives and friends to do the same.

He also talks about some of the biggest crimes of fashion he often sees men committing and how he would change them.
It takes inspiration from traditional native menswear from the south-south region of Nigeria, with some womenswear influences from south-west and northern parts of Nigeria.
GQ: What is the most African thing about your collection?
Mai: The heart of the designer is that of the collection.
GQ: Why, in your personal opinion, is it important to represent Africa through design?
Mai: I just believe it helps us tell our own story – that may be African or European influenced, but it’s important that we are able to tell our own stories.
GQ: Where do you, as a designer, draw the line between an authentic African aesthetic and something that is too cliche or typically ‘Curio’?
Mai: I really do not know what or if there is an authentic African aesthetic, and I do not believe there should be defining lines in fashion. If you feel, comprehend, and can, then design it. Express yourself. As long as the consumers derive value from it.
GQ: What are the biggest crimes of fashion you often see men committing and how would you change them?
Mai: Ill-fitting clothes, especially tight suits under the guise of a “fitted” suit (this kills me). I will continue to preach the gospel of a well-tailored “fitted suit” that accentuates the male form and not one that cuts off blood circulation. With my recently received Savile Row academy certification, the next step will be to allow Africa to experience not just the amazing look, but the comfortable feel of a Mai Atafo inspired bespoke suit.

Photo: Baby born in Ibadan clutching holy Qur’an

For those who believe in things like this...Nigerian Tribune is reporting that a baby was born recently in Oyo state clutching a pocket-size Qur’an (pictured above). The baby, who has since been named Ismail, was born in a church at the Oniyanrin area of Ibadan in September, the reports states. A renowned Islamic preacher who the newspaper spoke with said the woman who delivered the baby threw away the object she found in the baby's hand thinking it was something devilish, only for them to later find out it was a pocket-size Qur’an which contained all the 114 chapters in the holy book. It was wrapped in a thread. The preacher said although the Qur’an was small, the lettering inside was readable.

The child's parent who were not practicing any faith prior to the birth of Ismail, now say they will revert to Islam as this was a sign directly from Allah.

They also said since the news broke, their residence have become a mecca or sort as Ibadan people troop there to have a glimpse of the little boy.
