Hungry Pig Eats 2yr Old Baby ToDeath In China

A toddler in China has been killed and
partially eaten by a pig after crawling
into the animal’s pen while his
parents’ backs were turned.Two-year-
old Wei Tsao, known affectionately as
Keke, had been playing in the garden
of his parents’ house, in eastern
China’s Jiangsu Province, when they
went inside for a moment.

Left to his own devices Wei crawled
into the pig pen where the protective
sow mauled him to death in an
attempt to protect her newborn
piglets, before she began chewing on
his head.
Two-year-old Wei Tsao was mauled to
death after crawling into the pen of
this female pig in China as she
attempted to protect her newborn
piglets
Hearing their child’s screams, the
parents rushed back outside but found
they were too late.
Distraught father Sun Tsai, 25, said:
‘We had popped inside for just a
couple of minutes when we heard the
screams.
‘When we came out we saw the pig
about 80 metres away gnawing on
Keke’s head.’
Other villagers came rushing to the
scene where they grabbed the pig and
tied it to a tree before killing it and
cutting its stomach open.
Inside they found fragments of Keke’s
skull and hair, which they showed to
authorities to prove the pig had killed
him.
Wei had been playing in the garden
with his parents when they went
inside for a moment. When they
heard the boy’s screams they came
back outside, only to find the pig
eating his head. Village leader Cheng
Yuan, 62, said: ‘This is a horrible
tragedy. We had to cut the pig open,
not as an act of revenge but to prove
to the authorities that it had indeed
killed and eaten Keke.’
A police spokesman said: ‘Sows are
often docile creatures but pregnant
pigs and ones who have just given
birth can be very protective and turn
aggressive towards anything they
consider to be a threat to their piglets.
‘We urge farmers to keep their pigs in
their pens.’

Patience Jonathan accused of donating expired rice to Bayelsa women

fake-rice-300x194News coming from Yenogoa, the Bayelsa State capital says that the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan distributed expired rice to Bayelsa women.

Dame Jonathan had visited the state on Thursday to distribute empowerment materials to women. The exercise caused a heavy traffic gridlock, paralyzing social and commercial activities on the Yenagoa-Mbiama Road.
Women in the state, who were gathered at the Samson Siasia Stadium at Ovom, Yenagoa received gifts and cheques from the First Lady, who urged them to vote en-masse for her husband, Goodluck Jonathan.
However, news reports alleged that the rice distributed by the First Lady were expired ones.
According to Sahara Reporters, “the MDGs, a United Nations benchmark which is aimed at eradicating extreme poverty and hunger for all citizens, became the basis for a political campaign ground for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), a political group affiliated with President Jonathan’s re-election.”
Several bags of rice repackaged in bags branded with Mr. Jonathan’s photos, sewing machines, hair dryers, and tricycles also known as “Keke NAPEP” were distributed to some at the rally.
A DailyPost source in Yenogoa, responding to enquiries, said she heard the rumour but cannot confirm if Dame Jonathan actually distributed rice or whether the rice were expired. She added that what she is sure the First Lady gave out were tricycles.

FIFA 2018, 2022 World Cup finals: Russia, Qatar get clean bill of health

sepp-blatter-300x225FIFA ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert has cleared Russia and Qatar to go ahead with their hosting of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in an interim report on the world federation’s bid scandal investigation.

Munich-based Eckert has spent the past three months reading and assessing the evidence collected over the past two years by ethics investigator and/or prosecutor Michael Garcia. His verdict will infuriate critics of the award to the Gulf state in particular and will be, by no means, the end of the hue and cry. The American attorney and his Swiss deputy, Cornel Borbely, compiled a 430-page report with a further 200,000 pages of supporting documentation. Whether the entire report may be published one day appears unlikely because of confidentiality issues. The corruption crisis was sparked by FIFA’s decision in 2008 to undertake simultaneous bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the hope of generating significant immediate guarantees of long-term revenue. The decisive vote was undertaken by the executive committee on December 2, 2010, in Zurich.
Eckert’s 42-page summary ranged over the nature of the report and instances of concern. Russia and Qatar were the main focus of concern because they won the awards; both were cleared of wrongdoing and potential corruption and any breaches were “of very limited scope.”
Some individuals may face disciplinary action but the Qatar bid “did not compromise the integrity of FIFA World Cup bidding process as a whole.”
The one caveat about Russia is that all its bid office computers had since been destroyed so any potential trail of evidence concerning their bid has been lost. The Russians had been the most obstructive to the inquiry though there was little other evidence of wrongdoing.
Eckert clarified that there was no proven link between Qatar’s bidding success and the activities of Mohamed bin Hammam, the Qatari then president of the Asian confederation who was, simultaneously, pursuing his own ambitions to become FIFA president.
Other bidders also came in from criticism for their behaviour in the bidding process, including England and Australia. Some officials, according to Garcia’s recommendation, could face disciplinary action. England’s coduct, in relation to then CONCACAF president Jack Warner, was “damaging [to]the image of FIFA and the bidding process.”
This will be hugely embarrassing for the Football Association because of its ‘holier than though’ attitude towards FIFA and president Sepp Blatter down the years since the England bid was crushed in the first round of voting.
Eckert does not offer a totally clean slate. In his conclusion he noted “certain occurrences suited to impair the integrity of [the]bidding process.” These were, however, “of very limited scope [and]far from reaching any threshold that would require returning to the bidding process, let alone reopening it – a decision which anyway would not fall under the FIFA ethics committee’s competence.
“The assessment of the 2018-2022 FIFA World Cups bidding process is therefore closed for the FIFA ethics committee.”
However, disciplinary action for misconduct would follow against “specific officials.”

AFCON 2015 latest: Angola snubs CAF, as search continues for Cup hosts

Flag of AngolaHope has again dimmed for the Confederation of African Football, CAF in securing a host for the AFCON 2015 championship as Angola announced late Wednesday they were not interested in replacing  Morocco.

According to reports emanating from the Angola Football Federation, their decision is hinged on the fact that the time is too short for them to put things in place. This leaves three potential candidates – Egypt, Gabon and Nigeria to stage the continental showpiece.
Morocco were stripped of the right to host it after insisting on a postponement, citing as their reason the deadly Ebola epidemic.
Morocco’s stance irked organisers the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The federation’s president, Issa Hayatou, told France24: “To postpone the Africa Cup of Nations would be like stopping African football dead.”
“Once you postpone this event, it will open the door for everybody to ask for a delay of any competition and we will no longer be credible,” added the 68-year-old Cameroonian who has been in office since 1988. Angola had emerged as one of the front runners to come to the aid of the troubled 2015 Nations Cup which is due to start in two months time, on January 17.
The oil-rich state’s insistence that they were not interested in hosting a competition they staged in 2010 came from Joao Lusevikueno, vice president of the  Angolan football federation. He told AFP by telephone from Luanda: “ Angola is not going to host the competition, we haven’t presented our candidature and it is not our intention to do so.”
He added that to step in and organise a competition of this scale in two months — it is due to start on January 17 — was “virtually impossible”.  Angola’s staging of the 2010 Nations Cup was marred by the attack on the Togo team bus by separatists in the restless enclave of Cabinda which killed two people.
With Angola out of the picture the countries thought to be still in contention for taking over from  Morocco as 2015 hosts are multiple African champions Egypt, Gabon, which co-hosted the 2012 edition with Equatorial Guinea, and reigning champions Nigeria.

Only peace can earn us greatness –Alhaji Idris Yaro, Seriki Hausawa

IdrisPeace they say is the greatest ingredient for growth or advancement, thus the absence of it could spell doom and unprecedented regression. Alhaji Aminu Idris Yaro is the Seriki Hausawa of Lagos, in his royal chat with True Nigerians TV crew, he speaks on the need for greater unity amongst all ethnic groups within the country. Excerpts.

In your own definition, who is a true Nigerian?
I will say that a true Nigerian is somebody in any part of the world, more so a Nigerian or otherwise that feels and thinks Nigeria in the context of one thing: the very best in progress, stability and peace of the country. That is who I would call a true Nigerian.
What does peace mean to you and how can we achieve peace and stability in Nigeria?
The definition of peace for me is love, selflessness and acceptance of each other. What those it mean to me? It is something that I am willing to do everything humanly possible to have because it is something that brings about sanity across the world. So, peace is like the oxygen that we take and once it is contaminated a living being has a problem. Peace is of great high premium to a point that there is no value to peace, other than peace itself. Peace is priceless and that is how I view peace. I which that there are other adjectives I could use to qualify peace. Above all, peace is love, understanding and caring and it is something that you can continuously continue to open. That is how I view peace.
How then can we achieve peace and stability in Nigeria?
I have already answered it from the very first beginning. The first thing I said to you was love and then I told you that it conquers all. I also said that as a human being, we have to be selfless and not selfish. Once you are selfless, it means that you are willing to concede and once you are willing to concede, it brings about love and love will bring about that sanity, which will in turn bring about the understanding, which ends up in peace.
How where you able to gain the respect you enjoy amongst your people and beyond?
What you need to look at fundamentally is that there is a clear-cut difference between a leader and a ruler. By virtue of my upbringing, I was brought up and taught to be a leader, meaning that before you demand reciprocation you need to give it out first. If you respect your fellow human being, you will get respect in return. Make people understand that you are there for them all the time. You must be the last to eat, while they must come first and in everything you do, you must put them in total consideration. When you follow these principles, you will definitely find yourself enjoying an unreserved love of your people.
There is a sharp difference between somebody fearing you and respecting you. My people respect me, they do not fear me because I am not a boss and I am not a ruler. I give you a typical example. In a plane, you have the captain, the first officer, the engineers, other members of the crew and the travellers. In the event of an emergency, the captain is expected to be the last to leave.
Same for me; I do not see myself as superior to them, but of service to them. A lot of my people cannot come up to the level I am, so I have to come down to their various levels to meet with them in other to understand their needs and wants so that I can be their spokesperson and try the best that I can for them.
How did you become the Seriki Hausawa of Lagos. Was it by vote or hereditary?
I come from a family of a couple of brothers and sisters as well. I have elder brothers and sisters too. How did I become the Seriki Hausawa? In the final analysis, it is providence. That is God. If I have to break it down, I will remind you that my late father was a subject of the Oba of Lagos.
When he passed on, Kabiyesi (Oba of Lagos) was informed, and in the process of the condolences, a father of mine, my own Emir of Kano, was out of the country when my father died, but when he returned he sent his Turaki Kano to come and condole with the Oba of Lagos, because the Seriki Hausawas of Lagos is a subject of the Oba of Lagos, who is the paramount royal father.
He sent a condolence letter to the Oba of Lagos and in the second paragraph of his letter, he asked His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Lagos, if he will consider my person as the next Seriki Hausawas of Lagos. The title was given to me by God, but the instrument God used was our Kabiyesi, the Oba of Lagos. That was how I became the Seriki Hausawa of Lagos.
Before your coronation as the Seriki Hausawa of Lagos, what where you doing?
I was into business. General merchandise and trading were my lines of business and I was based in Abuja. I only moved to Lagos when my father died and I was made the Seriki Hausawa.
Was your choice and recommendation as a result of your antecedence?
I had already anticipated this question, so I had earlier answered it. What I said to you before was providence. I will give you a typical example. In your family, I am sure that you have brothers and sisters and even in your community you have relatives that are directly related to you by blood, but for no cause of yours, God decided that out of the rest of your family, to elevate you instead of any other person.
In this practical case, I do not think that He has to consult you or your father, mother or any other person. How did I become the Seriki Hausawa of Lagos? I will say that it is by the special grace of God. I do not even think that it was because of any particular thing that I did or so. “For He wanted, all He says is, be and it is.” That is how it is.

Ebonyi 2015: Strange alliance against Elechi’s successor

Elechi -2The quest for power and, specifically, to determine who becomes the governor of Ebonyi State from May 29, 2015 has thrown up so many interesting political alliances and permutations.

Between 2002 and 2003, Dr. Sam Egwu, the then governor of Ebonyi State, was locked in a deadly duel with the then President of the Senate and Nigeria’s number three citizen, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, currently Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF. By the time the dust settled, some innocent citizens of the state and even security operatives had lost their precious lives. That was in addition to billions of state funds that both groups ploughed into prosecuting the war as it were. However, today, like they say in politics, there is no permanent enemy and no permanent friend, only permanent interest. The interests of these Ebonyi power brokers have once again united them. The coming together of these old foes is even made more intriguing by yet another part of the alliance; that between the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi state, Engr. Dave Umahi, and INEC Federal Commissioner, representing the South-east zone, Chief Lawrence Nwuruku. These men’s only ambition is to cage and disgrace Governor Martin Elechi because Elechi and the PDP leadership and stakeholders in Ebonyi State have thought it wise that competence and integrity be the yardstick for the selection of who flies the PDP flag in the 2015 general elections.
The Electoral Act makes it very clear that whoever wishes to contest election for public office in Nigeria, but occupies another office in the government or within the civil service, should resign the appointment and face the electoral process. But in the case of Ebonyi, the political gladiators have continued to have the ‘best of both worlds’. This brazen disregard for the laws of the land has bred nothing except the looming implosion of the young state.
The office of the SGF is literarily the ‘brain box’ of the government of Nigeria. It is the office that coordinates the intricate workings and relationships of the various ministries and Federal Government parastatals and agencies that carry out the government’s policies. To this end, the occupier of the office is usually removed from the hoopla that follows political activities in the country.
Today, Senator Anyim has, despite the acclaimed sensitivity of his office to the success or failure of the government, seemingly abandoned his official duties in order to influence who becomes the next governor of Ebonyi State. It is quite unfortunate that while the government in which Anyim’s role is central is challenged on many fronts, especially the burgeoning activities of insurgents, the SGF has abandoned his duties for the local politics of who becomes what in Ebonyi State. The first time Anyim showed interest in local politics was when he tried to dictate to Ishiagu people who should lead the Ishiagu Community Development Union (ICDU). It was clear to the people that Anyim had pecuniary interest in trying to raise a surrogate for that office. In that venture, lives were lost and property worth millions damaged, as the community headed to court to address the attempt to undermine their civic rights.
In similar vein, Chief Lawrence Nwuruku, though a career politician, has equally abandoned his sacred duties, as an electoral umpire, who is supposed to be apolitical; at least, not openly, to further acerbate the misfortunes of the Federal Government of Nigeria by dabbling into the internal party issues in Ebonyi State.
The case of Chief Nwuruku is even scarier, considering the fact that he is a Federal Commissioner in INEC, representing the entire South-east geopolitical zone. It is instructive to note that a person in such a high office within the electoral umpire should never be seen to meddle in party  affairs, even of his ward as such activity could greatly erode the trust of the electorate in the electoral system. As a matter of fact, a free and fair election can never be guaranteed in a situation where electoral officers of the highest echelon get involved in who becomes what in an election where they will superintend! What is intriguing about Nwuruku’s latest attempt is that he was nominated for the present position by Anyim. And Ebonyi people want to know whether the alliance is for good or evil, remembering that Anyim also supported Nwuruku for his ill-fated attempt to become governor after crossing to the defunct ANPP in desperation!
To be clear, the constitution of Nigeria guarantees the right of every Nigerian who satisfies its basic provisions to vote and be voted for in elections, but these rights must be exercised within the ambits of the laws of the land.
For Egwu indeed, the man has been blowing hot and cold since he left office in 2007. Though political fortune has constantly smiled on him, Egwu obviously lacks the sagacity for real service to the people. His unfortunate trajectory in the Federal Ministry of Education where the sector was deep in crises and all he could care for was wedding anniversary party, remains fresh in our minds. Egwu became the governor of Ebonyi State in 1999, even as a minority Ngbo man because the Abakaliki political bloc was skeptical of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu being from the south. All said and done, Egwu emerged the governor and the entire state united behind him.
However, by 2006/2007 when the succession time came, Egwu abandoned the support of the major stakeholders and the entire state and, out of sentiment, imposed Chief Martin Elechi on the PDP and by extension the people of Ebonyi State. Though Egwu supported the opposition during the 2011 governorship, he was not bold enough to come out in the open to campaign against Elechi. Thank God, Chief Martin Elechi turned out to be a resounding success, as he has today laid a solid foundation for the upward swing of development in Ebonyi State.
But unlike Egwu; Gov. Martin Elechi widely consulted and held town hall meetings with the three senatorial zones of the state before the adoption of Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu by the PDP, Ebonyi State chapter. It, therefore, behooves on the quartet of Sen. Anyim, Chief Nwuruku, Dr. Sam Egwu and Engr. Dave Umahi to toe the line of honour and spare Ebonyi State the chaos they are so eagerly trying to foist on Ebonyi, as those that must come to equity must come with clean hands. If they feel strongly that Ebonyi people desperately want them, they can as well join Hon. Aminu Tambuwal in seeking greener pastures in other political platforms, considering the political permutations in their state.

Maduekwe’s senile recantation

MaduekweYet another extract from Maduekwe: “Suffice it to say, (sic) that we of old Abia PDP, (sic) owe Governor T. A. Orji a duty to continue to support him and his administration. It is a matter of honour and principle.
”Gerontologists strongly believe that the two greatest challenges of senility are forgetfulness (amnesia) and descent to geriatric behavioural manifestations. This explains the emotive outburst of Ojo Maduekwe over a mutual discussion at the London Heathrow Airport between him, as Foreign Affairs Minister, and the former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu. I empathise with Maduekwe, who is in his late 70s over his inevitable inability to recollect exactly verbal exchanges made just a few years back. The conversation focused on Kalu’s calamitous choice of his successor, Theodore Ahamefula Orji, despite multifarious oppositional forces, including this same Maduekwe at the time. Kalu’s inexplicable insistence on his ultimate nemesis and his manipulatively ingenious inauguration of T. A. Orji in Lagos instead of Umuahia – to shield him from the rampaging EFCC – remain subjects of future sociological investigations.

On October 31, 2014, Maduekwe took a half-page advertorial in THISDAY, obviously paid by the Abia State Government, on grounds of the advertiser’s legendary inability to keep the wolf from the door, to shamelessly deny the discussions he held some time ago with Kalu. Such nonsensical rebuttals are not strange in Nigeria’s murky politics with a disposition for stomach infrastructure. It is easy for Maduekwe to recant because, obviously, there is no documentation or tape record of the discussion between him and Kalu. So, in the circumstance and in the current Project Dismantle Kalu by Umuahia, anything will suffice to cut him to size. And with willing and ever-ready horses of bankruptcy and bellicosity, such tasks become as easy as the reality of President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term unstoppable victory.
If I may ask, had Kalu wanted to lie, would the only possible name to invoke be Ojo Maduekwe? Come on, let’s wear our thinking caps. The last name Kalu would employ, assuming there was need for such immaturity and impropriety, would be that of Ojo Maduekwe, essentially because of Maduekwe’s instability – a weakness that is captured in the next paragraph. Kalu could not have been under any compulsion to drop names, as there was absolutely no need for that. He is merely giving a rendition of his selfless service to the people of Abia State for eight years. The good thing to note here is that most of the accounts of his stewardship, unknown to his detractors, were fully documented and archived. Anyone who reads them will acknowledge the painstaking depth of issues highlighted.
Is it not amazing that a man like Maduekwe, who staunchly and vehemently supported the crusade for the late Gen Sani Abacha’s perpetuity in office, is now a champion in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and one of the so-called PDP stalwarts in Abia State? In sane societies where one’s antecedents count in national matters, a person like Maduekwe, who participated in the Abuja rally for Abacha would have been consigned to old people’s home, especially when it is realised that all his life, he had depended on various governments for sustenance and survival! Why on earth will a man with such a pedigree be pontificating where people with impeccable character choose the path of responsibility and respect for their old age instead of being sent on vicious errands by young men in power? It will never be well with hunger that makes a man do just any dirty job for a governor in return for life-support peanuts. No matter the level of poverty, a man approaching the octogenarian age should comport himself and carry on with some measure of dignity. With no government job again, Maduekwe is hapless and needs handouts from Gov. Orji.
Maduekwe remains the worst Foreign Minister Nigeria has ever had! And to worsen matters, after his fleeting stint in charge of our external relations, Maduekwe agreed to serve as an ambassador in a country as small as Ogun State because ‘man must chop’ in government circles at all costs no matter the indignity associated with such absence of self-respect! If I were Maduekwe, I should be so ashamed of myself that I would let sleeping dogs lie. Since in any survivalist environment, oddities take place, do we, seriously speaking, need to blame this ‘government’s perpetual child’ who cannot live outside the coffers of official treasuries?
Another misfortune of Maduekwe is his law background does not translate to any professional distinction, as he had never won any landmark case, unlike his contemporaries. Even his younger colleagues have earned SAN title while he is content with being a loafer in the corridors of power most times. It is interesting to note that most of his mates, who were called to the Bar with him, have won landmark cases and contributed to the law corpus. Meanwhile, the local champion from Asaga, Ohafia in Abia State, is, at best, an off-and-on lawyer in government service – whether military or civilian administration – it does not matter as there are no scruples being loyal to the two extremities.
Gov. Orji must be given kudos for his rehabilitative latitude, which has guaranteed daily living for the select “elders” backing him and, of course, “The Patriots,” whose ad hoc mandate is to futilely diminish and deconstruct irrepressible Kalu. The only drawback is that money meant for the development of the most backward state in the world is diverted to reward loyalists, who orchestrate phantom legacies of Gov. Orji. Do you blame them really, in the wake of strangulating poverty? But there should be decorum with Maduekwe-type of interjection.
With this kind of volte-face by Maduekwe, Kalu should acquire microchips or multi-functional electronic devices like special pens and wrist-watches so that when dealing with such characters, as Maduekwe, he would generate recorded information in case of denials in the future on account of perfidy and cowardice by his detractors and their outgoing benefactor.
Maduekwe also ignorantly referred to Kalu’s “Leadership Series” in Saturday Sun, as “purported”. I just hope this government pikin understands the meaning of that word. If he is mischievously applying it wrongly to mean that the articles are not from Kalu’s fountain of knowledge, then there is need for a psychotic test for this Asaga fellow.
With Gov. Orji’s commendable (excuse the pun!) superfluous beneficence to ragamuffins, it would have been foolhardiness on Maduekwe’s part not to publicly disown Kalu since he has nothing to lose, keeping mum while the trite advertorial in question with his name and signature would enhance his monthly stipend from Government House, Umuahia! To that extent, Maduekwe’s disavowals make great sense.
According to Maduekwe, in the clownish advertorial, his greatest political achievement in life was “dismantling PPA and ensuring Gov. Orji’s return to the PDP.” As far as Maduekwe is concerned, he succeeded in routing Kalu’s political dynasty with that usual, common defection accomplishment. A little mind will always be. “There were certain assurances I personally gave Chief T. A. Orji about Orji Uzor Kalu to smoothen the former’s return to PDP, which I need not disclose here.” If this bloke is not a cowardly gossip, let him be courageous and manly enough to reveal his machinations in expectation of patronage, which is what is happening now. As an aside, dear reader, you could see the malicious contempt for irredeemably rebellious (to paraphrase Maduekwe) Kalu, who he disrespectfully addresses without any title, even if “Mr.”, but his benefactor is consistently “Chief”!
Maduekwe should be ashamed of himself for this wildcat brazenness. It is this brainless support that has left Abia in ruins while hungry elders, the so-called patriots and other nondescript accessories to the rape of Abia that has left the state in unparalleled ruin and has earned it the worst state in the world. How on earth can Ojo Maduekwe, a notorious Abacha apologist, who took part in the one-million-man national tragedy of incomparable magnitude in the FCT, be thoughtlessly ascribing “honour and principle” to himself? Do we still have psychoanalysts in this country? This Gov. Orji’s accomplice in the ruination of Abia needs to have his brain and psychological state examined.
And now, the last excerpt from the puerile and invidious advertorial: “His (Kalu) recent tirade against me, which I know will not be his last, does not require the dignity of a response.” How can it be the last after wilfully touching the tiger’s tail? If you do not have a skeleton in your cupboard, you will not be afraid of reactions. Only the guilty are always afraid! Let me assure this Abacha man that there will be more reactions, not from Kalu, perhaps, but other Nigerians and Britons, who know you more than yourself!
Red Skelton’s memorable passage is good for Maduekwe, as he takes his rantings to 80: “I don’t let old age bother me. There are three signs of old age. Loss of memory – I forget the other two!” This rationalises Maduekwe’s senility and selfish jettisoning of Kalu, who cannot butter his bread (and possibly had never!) unlike his successor, most especially now! Who do you believe his word: Kalu or Maduekwe? You already know my unassailable position.

Ward congress: Enugu court bars PDP from accepting results

PDP-600x330Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezuluike, yesterday restrained the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from using or acting on the list or names purported to be the list of delegates elected during the recent ward and local government congresses, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit on the matter.

The ruling came as efforts were being made by the two factions of the party, led by Governor Sullivan Chime and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to douse the crisis.
However, the court order was seen to be a major setback to the Elder David Aja-led faction loyal to Ekweremadu who had relied on the purported ward congress list which had become controversial to sail through during the party’s primaries, even as the Chief Ikeji Asogwa-led faction had insisted that no congress was held in the 260 wards of the state on November 1.
The order was made barely 48 hours after a pronouncement made by the national leadership of the party before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, that the ward congress did not hold in Enugu, contrary to erroneous claims by the Aja faction.
In its ruling on a suit filed by one Charles Okafor, challenging the validity of the alleged congress, Justice Umezuluike also ordered an accelerated hearing of the substantive suit, citing the urgency of the matter.
He further granted the plaintiff seven days within which to file his statement of claim and serve the same on the defendant (PDP) and granted the defendant 14 days to file its statement of defence and serve the same on the plaintiff.
The matter was adjourned to December 8 for definite hearing.
A faction of the PDP in Enugu State, led by Elder Aja had claimed that the ward congress was conducted ‘peacefully’ in the state and published a list it claimed contained the names of ‘elected delegates’.
But the state executive committee of the party, led by Asogwa countered the claim, saying the congress never held in Enugu due to the non-arrival of members of the electoral panel and materials from Abuja on the scheduled date.

… Delegates flay CJ’s injunction
Delegates elected at the November 1, 2014 ward congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State have flayed the ex-parte order granted by the state High Court purportedly restraining the PDP from acting on the list or names of delegates elected during the party’s congresses pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit brought by a group loyal to Governor Sullivan Chime.
Reacting on behalf of the body of ward delegates elected at the congresses in question, a member of the three-man ward delegates, who emerged from Umuabi Ward in Udi Local Government Area of the state, Emeka Aneke, described the ex-parte injunction granted by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Innocent Umezulike, as a “gross abuse of court processes.”
He said: “We, the elected ward delegates, take exceptions to this gross abuse of court processes by the state chief judge. It is a public knowledge that the matter is a subject of litigation at Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, which had granted an injunction restraining the PDP and its principal agents from receiving any other result of the November 1, ward delegates election of the party other than the names submitted by the acting Chairman of the party, Elder David Aja and the electoral committee of the party.
“It could be recalled that APC governors had boasted that they had some members of the PDP Governors’ Forum working for them to frustrate the party in the forthcoming general elections before decamping, and this second injunction coming on the heels of an earlier injunction and various subterranean moves, seeking to undermine Elder Aja from carrying out his legitimate duties leaves no one in doubt that Governor Sullivan Chime is indeed an enemy within.
“We are now truly convinced that although the governor claims to have accepted not to join the race for the Enugu West Senatorial District, he is hell-bent on working with opposition forces to ensure that the PDP does not present candidates for the 2015 general elections, even as we have it on good authority that the governor and his men are making plans to field candidates on another party platform in the state.
“They deliberately served the Enugu PDP instead of the national headquarters to ensure that the PDP did not make an appearance at the court and we are already sending a petition to the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate the processes leading to this kabu-kabu injunction and the habitual abuse of ex-parte injunction by one man,” he said.

Participatory politics: Emulate Cross River –Ita–Giwa

GiwaFormer Special Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo on National Assembly Matters, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa in this chat with journalists analysed the political situation in Cross River and described it as a Gestapo where elders are being disrespected but explained why she remained in the PDP.

Why I remain in PDP
I’m in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  because of the tremendous support and respect I enjoy at the national level in spite of the fact that I have never occupied any party position since I joined the party from the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) 15 years ago. If I were still to be there, by now, I could have risen to the post of the Deputy National Chairman.
The ward congress in Cross River
I commend the impeccable conduct of the ad hoc delegates election panel and the appeal panel that followed immediately. The panel members were made up of credible individuals. I thank the party for allowing due process and true democracy to prevail for the first time in Cross River State even as other states are crying foul that the process was hijacked by their leadership. I want to add that the peace that had existed in the state were graveyard peace because the people had been suppressed for so long and I make bold to state that Cross River remained the only state where party elders are disrespected and treated shabily.
Party Elders and their structures
“As I speak now, there are psychological intimidations and palpable fear in Cross River State as people are scared of even making political conversation on phones let alone gathering in their private homes to discuss politics because of the fear of political punishments. I describe this as a gestapo situation and a steady shift into a state of anarchy. “How come those that are challenging the system for the past three years have now gone into hiding? I want answers to this question. All opposition members have gone into hiding.
Private political arrangements
There was a private arrangement which ensured the Ikang zone produce the Chapter Chairman while I remained the caucus leader to sustain the political process but without informing me,  I was removed but instead of abandoning my people, I remained undaunted and continued to provide credible leadership to the people especially at the riverine area of the state.
Why structures are hijacked
The purported hijack of all the structures were meant to satisfy their selfish ends but politics is a spiritual thing and  nemesis would always catch up with those who trample on others.  I am surprised that the same leadership that takes away and add names are the one crying over party congress. This reminds me of the popular soap opera;  The rich also cry. The rich should also cry because the poor had cried for too long. “For me as a forthright leader who has paid her dues at all levels, the issue of governorship resides with the people. Legitimacy is their rights and at their prerogatives, they should decide who will govern them. I have nothing personal against any senatorial aspirant because of their pedigree but in my opinion, Senator Prince Bassey Out has done well and I am supporting continuity and I wish to state for the umpteenth time that in the interest of peace, that list of congress results should not be tampered with.”
She called on other states to emulate Cross River State in allowing a level playing ground for the people to choose leaders of their choices as against impositions.

Coal City taxis shut down Enugu for Ugwuanyi

ifeanyi ugwuanyiOver 1000 taxi cabs took over the major streets and roads of the Enugu Coal City yesterday when the Enugu Unity Forum, an association set up for good governance in the state in conjunction with the taxis held a mega rally that almost grounded activities in the state capital.

The road show which lasted for over five hours was a rare show of solidarity as the taxi’s reportedly agreed to take a day off to drum up support for the House of Reps member who has been adopted as the PDP guber consensus candidate for the 2015 elections.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the rally, the leader of the forum, Hon Tahil OchiI expressed satisfaction with the turnout which he noted is unprecedented.
Said he; “I thank God that Enugu people have again spoken to show solidarity for Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. I don’t know how to describe the crowd today but I must thank the almighty God for the overwhelming support for Sullivan Chime because it is a support for the governor as well as the incoming governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
“We organized this mega rally for Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi the consensus guber candidate of the PDP in Enugu State in conjunction with Enugu City Cab. I am highly impressed and all glory must go to God.
“It’s a support for Ugwuanyi, a popular candidate, the choice of Enugu people and we said it will be good to organize a rally for him to show how popular he is amongst the populace. So, the Enugu Unity Forum with Enugu Taxi came out enmasse and joined hands to have a road show round the whole city of Enugu State to show solidarity with the man that we know will be the governor of Enugu State.
On those who are still kicking against the consensus, Ochi said; “Of course, they must accept the decision of the party because we are all party members and if you even look at what happened in the presidential nomination too, everybody came together and said okay; let the president contest as a consensus candidate. And if you have looked around, even some people that went to buy form, they have all dropped because you must respect the party because the party has the final say.
“In Enugu State, the PDP stakeholders have endorsed Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi but that doesn’t mean that you have to shut out people from showing interest to contest but they are in the minority and I believe they will queue up.
“I don’t know what you mean by political maneuvering; the PDP has spoken and whoever disagrees has an option to go to another party but we are not praying for that. Since the party has come out open to say this is our consensus candidate, I am only preaching as the leader of Enugu Unity Forum that all our brothers who in one way or the other feel they should have been the governor should queue up and respect the party.”
The Enugu Forum President expressed conviction that Hon. Ugwuanyi will make a good governor saying; “he is going to build on the legacies laid down by Governor Sullivan Chime. I want to also tell you that Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, I know him very well, I know his pedigree, and our people in Enugu State know that this man will be one of the best governors in 2015.
He described the PDP guber consensus candidate, Ugwuanyi as a philanthropist, a team leader, a politician who has been in the system for almost 12 years as a member of the National Assembly. “He knows that politicians exist and we believe he will perform wonderfully well.
“As I talk with you today, you can verify from the streets of Enugu, he is the most popular candidate in the state. There is nowhere you mention his name that people will not say ‘that good man.’ It’s not for me to start telling you what he has done for the people but if you go down to the grassroots, and ask, the down trodden will tell you that this man has touched their lives in one way or the other without being a governor. So, if you give him the leadership of the state, he is going to build on the existing infrastructural development that the present administration has put in place in the state.  And I know he is going to do better in 2015 as a governor.
Ochi noted that the forum which pushed for the realization of a power shift to Nsukka zone has always believed that for the sake of equity that power should go to Enugu North.
“We don’t have any problem in the state whether it is going to the North or East, everybody in the state has agreed it is for the North and more than 90 per cent of those aspiring to be governor are all from the zone.  And when the stakeholders met, you discover that more than 99 per cent supported the emergence of Ugwuanyi from the zone.
“So, we are not afraid that the zoning is on-course but in politics, there is need to carry the message to the grassroots again to tell them yes, this is the decision of the stakeholders. So, we are not afraid of anybody contesting the election because majority will always have their way.
He maintained that; “there is a pattern in PDP; and the party has not shut anybody out from contesting but at the appropriate time, and before the primary, I assure you that Ugwuanyi will be the sole candidate.”

Air Force helicopter crashes as Boko Haram mount raids

article-9cfe62a0-a021-43bb-9f0d-954151244bf9-6U4rAthAQ-HSK1-547_634x408The Nigerian Air Force on Friday said it had lost another helicopter in the restive northeast, after Boko Haram rebels raided two more towns and vigilantes and hunters clawed back a key militant stronghold.

The second crash in a week happened late Thursday in Yola, the capital of Adamawa, which is one of three states that has been under emergency rule since May last year.
While there was no immediate indication that the armed Islamist movement was responsible for the crash, there has been an increase in Boko Haram activity in the state in recent weeks.
Boko Haram has reportedly taken over more than two dozen towns in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, including the commercial hub of Mubi, some 200 kilometres (125 miles) from Yola.
Last week, the extremists, who have been waging a five-year insurgency to create a hardline Islamic state, renamed Mubi “Madinatul Islam” or “City of Islam” in Arabic, residents said.
Nigeria’s chief of army staff, Major General Kenneth Minimah, told a Senate defence committee on Thursday that the loss of territory was “painful” but promised that troops would recapture lost ground.
Locals and a government official said later that about 200 vigilantes and hunters armed with home-made guns, spears, clubs, bows and arrows, and machetes took back Mubi.
“It is true Mubi has fallen back into the hands of Nigerian soldiers with the help of local vigilantes and hunters,” Chibado Bobi, chief of staff in the Adamawa state governor’s office, told AFP.
“It is however too early for residents who fled to move back to Mubi because the security and vigilantes need to mop up all remnants of the group that may be lurking in nearby areas.”
Boko Haram had introduced its strict version of Islamic law in the town, including amputations for accused thieves, according to residents who fled.
The hunters captured the Boko Haram-appointed emir, or leader, of Mubi after the attack, while militant fighters fled.
But instead of being pushed back to other territory it is reported to control, locals said Boko Haram invaded Hong, 50 kilometres (30 miles) south on the way towards Yola, and Gombi, to the northwest of Mubi.
In both Hong and Gombi, the militants were said to have razed the towns’ police stations.
The move towards Yola will raise concerns about safety in the city, where thousands of people have taken refuge to escape the violence.
The chopper crash near a hall of residence at the Modibbo Adama University of Science and Technology caused panic among students, as weapons said to be on board apparently exploded.
“We heard a huge thundering sound which made us rush out of the hostels, thinking the school was under Boko Haram attack,” said one student, Harisu Abdulaziz.
Another student said there was chaos as residents at the hostel tried to flee but were prevented by soldiers guarding the gates.
The university has been under military protection after a spate of Islamist attacks against schools in the region.
Kyari Mohammed, a lecturer at the university and a specialist in Boko Haram, said the helicopter that came down was one of two that flew over the campus.
“The crash was followed by a series of intermittent explosions inside the chopper, which people believed to be from weapons the chopper was ferrying,” he said.
Air force spokesman Dele Alonge confirmed that one of its aircraft had crashed but provided no details as to the cause or casualties.
On Monday, the military said another helicopter made an emergency landing near Yola airport, with no casualties reported.

'All is not well with Nigeria'Catholic Bishops say as theymeet with GEJ

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, a
body of Nigerian priest, paid a visit to Pres.
Jonathan yesterday at the State House to
express concern over increasing attacks by
Boko Haram members in the North East.
The groups president and Archbishop of Jos
diocese, Bishop Ignatius Kaigama, who spoke
with newsmen after their closed door meeting
with President Jonathan, said they were at
the state house to talk about lack of security
in Nigeria and find out what the government
is doing about it...
"We feel that things are not right.
Territorially, our land is being taken
away; the people we look after are
displaced, their homes, their villages
and towns are captured and they are
internally displaced, being refugees in
their own land.
We thought this is not right. We have
families that are just stranded. We
thought that the President should know.
As Catholics, we have laid a good
structure for relief and taking care of
such situation, we want the government
to collaborate with us. We just wanted
to remind him of things he already
knows, there was nothing we said that
was new, we just wanted to lay
emphasis and we wanted him to know
we are concerned. The President is
already doing his bit; he has assured us
that he is on top of the situation"
Bishop Kaigama argued that although
muslims have also been killed during the
various attacks, the primary aim of Boko
Haram is to wipe out Christianity and
islamiatize Nigeria
"When we admit that some Muslims are
also targeted, we want to believe that
the principal aim and concern of Boko
Haram is to eliminate Christianity and
pave the way for total Islamization of
the country" he said

madness, infertility and death if they ever
spoke up.
