NFF crisis: Kalu tasks Amaju on unity

Orji-Uzor-Kalu1As controversy continues to envelop the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), former Governor of Abia State and Pillar of Sports, Dr. Orji Kalu has made a passionate call for calm.

Kalu spoke yesterday, when NFF President, Mr. Pinnick Amaju led members of the board to his Abuja residence.
“Please, we cannot continue like this. I call on all stakeholders to consider national interest above everything else.
Our country is too fragile now for any individual or group to be threatening the only cord that gives all of us joy. Whatever it will take to achieve peace, I am ready to play a huge role,” he told the officials.
The former governor added that what should pre-occupy the stakeholders is how to earn a ticket to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
“The Eagles are defending champions and we are just one leg away from elimination. Nigerians cannot afford to watch other countries do battle in their darling team’s absence. Politics is around the corner. It is only football than can douse the tension,” he pointed out.
Kalu also took time to comment on Stephen Keshi, whose contract was not renewed after a string of poor runs.
“Well, Keshi is my friend and I advised him severally. I had wanted him to take Ike Uche to the last World Cup, but he had his reasons. Now I am sure he has also realized his mistake. We should forgive Keshi and move ahead. Maybe, we should have allowed him to conclude the Nations Cup qualifiers,” Kalu said.

Kidnapped German ‘rescued’ in Nigeria

0,,17613445_303,00Ogun state police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said the hostage was “rescued” on Thursday, but the security services have previously claimed successful rescue operations even when ransoms were paid.

The company the kidnapped man works for, construction firm Julius Berger, provided no details on the release but said that the employee was kidnapped on October 24th in an attack which left another German national dead.
“Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is pleased to officially announce the release of the company’s member of staff, who was abducted in Ogun State,” a statement from the firm said.
“The company would like to thank the all those who assisted in achieving a swift and safe release, especially government authorities and security services.”
Four gunmen emerged from the bush and opened fire on two vehicles in which the two men were travelling.
The employee who died, a sub-contractor, died in hospital from a bullet wound while two other staff members were hurt.
Julius Berger confirmed that the group was moving in separate vehicles without security escort to a quarry in Ogun state.
Foreign companies, especially oil majors and large construction firms, typically require expatriate staff to travel with police escort because of the
high threat of kidnapping in Nigeria.
Abductions targeting foreigners are common throughout the southern part of the country.
Hostages are often released following a payment, especially in the oil-producing Niger Delta region, which has seen waves of similar attacks.
The security services and the companies involved rarely discuss details of ransom payments and there was no mention in Thursday’s statement that money had exchanged hands.
The shooting was “an isolated criminal incident” which did not affect its operations elsewhere in the country, the firm said last week.
Julius Berger has operated in Nigeria since 1965 and has more 600 employees in the country, according to the company’s website. Many of its staff are Nigerian nationals.
Foreigners have also been abducted in the north of Africa’s most populous country in attacks seen as linked to Boko Haram’s Islamist uprising.
A German national was kidnapped in July in northeastern Adamawa state, one of the areas under a state of emergency because of Boko Haram attacks. His whereabouts and condition remain unknown.
One of their most notorious abductions involved a German national in the northern city of Kano in January 2012.
Edgar Fritz Raupach, an engineer, was kidnapped on the outskirts of the city days after one of the deadliest ever raids by Boko Haram, a coordinated gun attack in Kano that killed more than 185 people.
Raupach died there in May of that year, apparently during a sweep by the security services on a Boko Haram safe house.
Security sources at the time said they had no idea that Raupach was being held in the house when they stormed it.

Discipline gave Falcons trophy –Jonathan

victorious falconsPresident Goodluck Jonathan yesterday received the Super Falcons, who won the African Women Football Nations Cup in Namibia last week at the Council Chambers, saying discipline and patriotism played a key role in their victory.

He promised to host the Super Falcons to a special dinner on November 5th, to enable the nation honour them for their outstanding performance. In a short ceremony shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, the president, who was presented with the trophy, commended the players for combining their skills with discipline, which have consistently earned them trophies, as well as for making Nigeria proud. He urged all footballers to imbibe the virtue of discipline as without it, they could not achieve much both in sports and other ventures. “Today we are quite pleased to receive the cup from you. You have made the country proud. Nigeria is known to be a soccer country. The male teams have been doing very well. But because of certain internal crisis, we tend to lag behind. But the female teams have been doing wonderfully well.
We thank you for your commitment because it requires discipline to achieve this height. No matter how good you are, even in the academics, you see brilliant boys and girls, who ordinarily would have made first-class but because of lack of discipline, they don’t make it. So, if there is no discipline, you cannot excel in anything. You have the skills but you have also shown discipline that made you excel. We will continue to respect you.” Minister of Sports, Tammy Danagogo, in his remarks stated: “we bring you good tidings from Namibia; the legendary good luck has continued to follow us.”
He disclosed to the president that the discipline, dedication, passion and patriotism displayed by the Falcons during the tournament was unequalled.

… As Elegbeleye calls for truce

Elegbeleye DG National Sports CommDirector General, National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, has sounded a note of warning to the principal actors in the administrative crisis rocking the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), urging them to sheath their swords.

Elegbeleye, who made the plea in a chat with journalists during Dr Patrick Ekeji’s book launch in Abuja on Tuesday, noted, however, that he was angry with the statement credited to the President of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou who said Nigeria had become a pain in the neck of CAF.
While assuring that the crisis would soon be resolved, the Sports Commission’s DG said: “I was really very disappointed when I read the comments of CAF President, Issa Hayatou who said Nigeria is CAF’s biggest problem. However, I don’t see any reason why we cannot resolve this crisis which is not helping our football. I can assure you it will be over in a matter of days.”
The Ondo State-born former parliamentarian also had words of praise for the continent queens, the Super Falcons.
“I am really very happy because the Falcons’ victory came at the right time as it has confirmed Nigeria as the all round champions of the continent. We now have in our custody both the male and female trophy of the continent. This is a historic feat,” Elegbeleye noted.
Hon Elegbeleye equally showered encomium on Dr Ekeji, describing him as a fine gentleman and stabilising force between the Nigerian sports family and the National Assembly, while he served as the Director General of the Sports Commission.
His words: “I had a good working relationship with him when I was in the national assembly and he was the DG of NSC. Ekeji is an astute sports administrator and an intellectual. The book he has written is a must read for anybody in sports.”post by expdonaloaded

Rivers: Amaechi, Wike in show of might

wike amaechiLast weekend, a political scenario was played out by two prominent citizens of Rivers State.
The personalities are the sitting Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the immediate past Minister of State for Education, Nyesome Wike. While Wike, held a reception rally last Friday, having resigned his portfolio in the President Goodluck Jonathan cabinet to contest next year’s governorship election in the state, Amaechi on the other hand organized a rally the second day in commemoration of the seventh anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling that brought him to power as Rivers State Governor. But Amaechi’s rally, analysts observed, was an unmistakable signal to the opposition in the countdown to next year’s elections.

As if to confirm analysts observation, Amaechi, at the well attended rally intoned: “I want to test my popularity” to a multitude of supporters and well wishers, who had gathered at the 40,000 capacity Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Igwuruta-Ali, Port Harcourt, as early as 7am to celebrate seven years of Amaechi’s reign in the oil rich state through an unprecedented Supreme Court ruling in October 2007.
Although Wike’s outing could be said to be less significant because he called it a reception, the import the two rallies however, no doubt afforded observers globally, the opportunity to assess the strength of the two men on the one hand and the support that Amaechi and Jonathan stand to muster in the state in the 2015 electoral battle.
The governor’s rally, last Saturday’s was out of this world and appeared unrivalled in the history of contemporary political mobilizatio in the country. Although it may have been coincidental that the need for Amaechi to test his popularity and strength on a new platform came at a time his victory at the Supreme Court was seven years old, the governor and his team left nothing to chance in their resolve to make a clear political statement, a few months to the general election.
Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital was literally shut down last Saturday. A majority of the people, who had signed up for the rally resorted to trekking from a distance as far as Rupokwu area to the stadium and back. There was the possibility that a majority of air passengers missed their flight that morning as the road to and from the airport was completely shut down. Human traffic was not convenient either.
Yet the citizens appeared happy and elated to identify with their governor. A majority of them confirmed to our correspondent the fact that the crowd present at the rally was not hired contrary to insinuations.
“One need to break into Central Bank’s Vault to get enough money to put such a crowd together,” a supporter, who simply identified himself as Richard submitted, adding, “if the census of this crowd is taken, we cannot be less than 5, 5000 present here.” He was convinced that the crowd was not a rented one.
An artisan, Alvan however could not be bothere about whatever anybody could say, saying, “the election at the corner will determine who owns this state between the people behind Amaechi and those chasing political shadows.”
However, the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, explained that “apart from the 40,000 seats that were filled to capacity, there were about 45,000 people standing in the main bowl of the stadium while 55,000 were stuck outside the venue, unable to gain access despite the fact that the entire 25 exits were opened for access.”
While one may fault her calculation, other stakeholders thought that the crowd at the stadium in total was not less than 75,000, including those sitting, those standing as well as those outside.
As jubilation and celebration continued in the arena, people were called up the podium one after the other to address the crowd as well as attest to the scorecard of the Amaechi administration in the last seven years. Generally, the speeches were not different from one another – they were either of support for or affirmation of the good works of the governor.
However, the ovation that trailed Amaechi’s approach to the podium with some skelewu dance steps, for his address was deafening.
Exuding confidence, Amaechi, amidst cheers addressed the gathering: “I am here to test my popularity. They have made too much noise. The president says we exist only on posters and billboards. So, we brought a large billboard for him. If the President is not watching (the rally) they will give him security report.
“This stadium is 40,000 sitting capacity; I built it. One of them campaigning for governorship was the contractor to do the roads. He abandoned the roads, took N3billion and left, and now he wants to be governor. A thief will not be our governor.
“I challenge them to an integrity test. Any of them from Abuja to Rivers State, I challenge them to an integrity test. I have worked with them; I have their records and they (the records) are in the Office of the Governor. I challenge any of them to performance.
“In 50 years, all the state governments put together plus council chairmen built six classroom blocks, but in seven years, I have built 20 classroom blocks. We have developed 715 megawatts of electricity, but the problem is federal government allowing us to distribute electricity. They don’t want you to have electricity. Vote them out!
“We were to give Port Harcourt water, but as I am talking to you today, the Minister of Finance has refused to move the file again back to the Executive Council for approval so that you can have water. They don’t care for you; they want you to die of water-borne diseases. Punish them with your votes; punish PDP with your votes. They say he (Jonathan) is our son, then why can’t we have water? The problem we have is that the EFCC is no longer working,” he said.
Conversely, for Amaechi and his party in Rivers, there could not have been a better way to send a rather strong message of popularity to the PDP than the opportunity the Saturday rally provided even though the ruling party was believed to have responded rather cynically....post by expdonaloaded

Burkina Faso’s revolution 2.0

_78640417_08abf538-8efc-46b9-8896-bdd7d9abeddcAfter two days of protests in Burkina Faso the president, Blaise Compaoré, has reportedly abandoned plans to amend the constitution to allow himself a further three terms in office.

Followed on Twitter by journalists and protestors, and with live reports streaming on Radio Omega FM Ouaga’s online station, this “revolution 2.0” has already been called a victory by the Burkinabè opposition.
Communications minister, Alain Edouard Traore, announced the move in a hurried statement after the parliament, national TV and radio buildings were stormed, and statues were toppled in the country’s second largest city, Bobo Dioulasso.
French media is also reporting that the president’s brother has been arrested as he tried to flee the country, and statements by the army’s Général Kouamé Lougué have fuelled speculation that the army are poised to remove Compaoré from power.
At 1.40pm Reuters photojournalist Joe Penney tweeted: “People marching towards presidency led by General Kwamé Lougé. About to meet presidential guard loyal to Blaise. Final assault #burkina.”
The army chief of staff was due to give a speech at 2pm.
Compaoré, 63, has been president for 27 years since seizing power in a military coup in 1987.
Despite already being reported as a victory for the Burkinabè people against Compaoré’s “constitutional coup d’etat”, protesters say they continue to face rounds of live ammunition from the security forces even after the announcement, as governments buildings continue to burn.
On Twitter, journalists and protesters have been following events using the #lwili hashtag, named after the traditional Burkinabè Lwili Peendé cloth being worn by many in the protests.
Now dubbed Burkina’s “revolution 2.0”, a reference also to the country’s popular movement led by Thomas Sankara in 1983, the announcement suggests a promising break with the trend set by various African rulers finding elasticity in constitutional limits, including Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Namibia, Togo and Uganda.
Opposition activist Emile Pargui Pare told the AFP news agency: “October 30 is Burkina Faso’s Black Spring, like the Arab Spring.”post by expdonaloaded

Photo: Nigerian girl dies after failed Butt enlargement surgery in Thailand

24yr old British-Nigerian lady, Joy Williams (pictured above) has died after a failed £2,000 butt enlargement surgery in Bangkok, Thailand. The young lady's older brother, Anietie, who lives in Nigeria, said the family didn't even know she'd traveled to Thailand.
"We don't really know what went wrong, we only know what is in reports in the media." Anietie said
He also said that the family is making preparations to bring her body home. According to the Daily Mail, Joy, who relocated to the UK from Nigeria in 2007 and lives with her mother in Thamesmead, died on October 23rd after visiting a clinic called SP Clinic in Thailand which she had found on the internet. Continue...

From UK Daily Mail
Doctor Sompob Sansiri, 51, is lead away by police after Miss Williams died at his clinic
She initially visitied to the SP clinic, which she found on the internet, on October 14 to have the operation which she hoped would give her a bigger, fuller bottom.
A few days later her wounds became infected and she returned to have corrective surgery to remove the silicon implants.
But she was found dead on the operating table with a three inch-long stitched incision on her tail bone after medical staff found they were unable to resuscitate her.
Thai officials investigating her death believe her operation had been delayed to ensure Miss Williams had not eaten anything beforehand and that as a result the operation began after the clinic's legal closing time of 7pm.
It is believed Miss Williams had long struggled with her self-esteem and been bullied at school before choosing to undergo an operation on her nose to improve her looks.
Doctor Sompob Sansiri claimed to have trained in the U.S. and been practicing since 1998, but he is now facing ten years behind bars
While in Bangkok she had been staying at the £11-a-night Vabua Asotel hotel which is used by the clinic as accommodation for its patients.

The doctor who carried out the procedure, Sompob Sansiri, 51, was later arrested and accused of negligence after it was found that he had been carrying out night-time surgery without a licence.
He has now been charged with recklessness causing death and could face 10 years in jail if found guilty.
The clinic has been closed for 60 days while investigations are carried out. Thailand is a world-leader in cosmetic surgery tourism with many companies offering procedures at discounts of up to 60 per cent. The industry earned the country £2.68billion in 2013 alone.
One of Joy's friend who spoke with UK Telegraph said she had suffered bullying and low self esteem issues while they were in school and that she was never happy with herself.

"She was a really, really nice girl. She was very friendly and caring. She was always helping her mum with her brothers. She was a very bright girl and did well at school. She was a bit shy and quiet and I knew in later years there was something wrong and upsetting her. At school she had been bullied over her appearance and she went for surgery on her nose and face. Last time I saw her it was obvious she had had cosmetic surgery. She was fine before, she didn’t need to. She was fine the way she was but she just wasn’t happy. She had no self esteem and I guess she felt she needed to do it. She was just never happy with herself.”
Police are now waiting for the postmortem result which would determine if the doctor will be charged for medical negligence.

Amaechi will pay for his attack on Jonathan, First Lady –Evans Bipi

amaechi-rotimi4The self-acclaimed Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Evans Bipi, has vowed that Governor Chibuike Amaechi would pay for his attack on President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience, immediately he leaves office.

Bipi told journalists in Port Harcourt, yesterday, that Amaechi had been taking advantage of his immunity to disparage Jonathan and his wife indiscriminately.
“It is regrettable that Rotimi Amaechi has consistently insulted and disparaged a sitting President and his wife with impunity in abuse of his immunity as a governor.
We feel pained that we are constrained to take necessary action against him because of the immunity, which he enjoys.
“In less than eight months from now, Amaechi will be made to answer for all his actions against President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan.”
He vowed: “Wherever Amaechi likes, let him run to after his tenure as governor; we must surely get him to answer for all his libelous utterances, rascality and inciting public disorder against the president and his wife.”
Bipi, who is the leader of the anti-Amaechi lawmakers of the state House of Assembly and coordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus, Wakirike extraction, accused the governor of squandering N19 billion to organise the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in the state.
Also, he debunked the governor’s allegation that the First Lady, Dame Jonathan, wanted him to share the resources of the state with her and challenged Amaechi to prove his claims.
He said: “We also challenge Governor Amaechi to prove his allegation that the First Lady sent ex-militants to stage protest against him for refusing to share Rivers money with her. These allegations by the governor are false and baseless.”
The lawmaker representing Ogu/Bolo Constituency alleged that Amaechi’s wife, Dame Judith, collected N36 million meant for constituency projects for her pet project.
He, however, urged the governor’s kinsmen to call him to order against further attack on the president and his wife, as failure to heed to the warning, would have unfavourable consequences...post by expdonaloaded
