I am not against the North – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday reiterated his
unflinching commitment to the cause of North, saying that he
had no reason to hate or work against the interest of the
people from the region.
Speaking in Sokoto at the zonal presidential campaign rally,
he insisted that his administration remained supportive to see
the North through in infrastructure development.
He listed the development projects executed in the North by
his administration to include the railways, establishment of 10
universities, Almajiri schools, Green Great Wall project and the
effort to eradicate polio, among other diseases in the region.
“I said polio must stop in the North, if I did not like the North,
I will not want to stop polio. I will not support farmers from
the North. I established Almajiri schools to boost the basic
education system in the North. Let them tell us what they
have done? Jonathan queried.
He said his administration has kept faith with commitments to
ensure Nigerians were better off in so many areas of human
developments.
“I am particularly concerned about the education of the
Nigerian child who should access same for a sound foundation
for self and nation-building”, he said.
He pledged to focus on the Goronyo and Shagari dams in an
effort to demonstrate commitment to boost agriculture and
utilise appropriately the potentials of the dam.
Also speaking, the PDP National Chairman, Adamu Mua’zu,
said the party is committed in reversing all trends for the
benefit of Nigerians irrespective of any political differences.
The former governor and Chairman, who is also Sokoto PDP
Elders’ Forum, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, said the party is
ready to take over from the APC-led state government. He
also promised to deliver the state for President Jonathan next
month.

Certificate saga: Buhari not qualified to run –Jonathan’scampaign organisation

Barely 24 hours after General Muhammadu Buhari cleared air
on his certificate issues, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Presidential Campaign Organisation has stated that the All
Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate is not
qualified to run for presidency.
In a statement yesterday, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, director of
media and publicity of the campaign organisation, said since
Buhari had not tendered a copy of his school certificate, it
could be taken that he was not qualified to vie for the post of
president.
“As long as he cannot produce that secondary school
certificate, we believe that he is not qualified to run for the
Presidency of Nigeria. This is a matter of law and not
sentiment. Buhari, just like any other Nigerian, must be
compelled to abide by the law and he must prove his
eligibility for the presidential election by simply producing his
secondary school certificate,” Fani-Kayode said.
The campaign organisation dismissed Buhari’s position that
he had contested previous elections and that the issue of his
qualifications did not arise, saying the fact that he did not
produce his certificates in “2003, 2007 and 2011 does not
make it right,” adding: “The minimum that Nigerians require
from Buhari is the presentation of his secondary school
certificate, which enabled him to gain admission into the
Nigerian Military College in 1962 and on which basis he
became a commissioned officer of the Nigerian Army.”
On how the certificate saga started, it stated: “Had INEC not
complied with the Electoral Act this year, which requires that
they paste the academic credentials of all the presidential
candidates, Nigerians would have remained ignorant of the
fact that Buhari has probably, been submitting affidavits for
the past elections.”
The campaign team also said that Buhari’s school certificate
“forms the fulcrum for the subsequent courses that he
attended as he rose in the Army, including the U.S. War
College,” insisting: “Failure to produce that school certificate
implies that Buhari’s entire career in the Army was based on
falsehood, which cannot stand. This brings to question the
admission system/policy into the Army in the early 1960s.”
It wondered if the rules in admitting people into the army was
bent in favour of Buhari, saying: “We believe that Buhari was
one of those people and this is why he is unable to produce
his certificate.”
It therefore concluded: “The truth is that he was never
qualified for entry into the Military Academy in the first place
and consequently he should never have become a
commissioned officer let alone a man that rose to the rank of
General. At best he ought to have remained a non-
commissioned officer.”

Military foils bid to seize Gombi in Adamawa

A fresh attempt by Boko Haram to seize Gombi town in
Adamawa State was repelled yesterday by a joint military and
vigilance groups. Although sources claimed six people died at
Dzangola in the Gombi Local Government Area and three at
Dabua in Hong local Government Area and several houses,
including churches burnt, but the Joint Task Force (JTF)
frustrated the insurgents’ attempt to seize the two towns.
The sources also indicated that the insurgents struck on
Sunday night, shooting sporadically and in the process, a
soldier and a woman lost their lives, while another source
alleged that six persons died in the gun duel.
An eyewitness also told Daily Sun in Yola that the attempt by
the insurgents met a stiff resistance as the troops engaged
them in a fierce gun duel that lasted for some hours.
The terrorists were said to have attacked the town from Biu –
Garkida axis which connects Sambisa forest and the hilly Lala
axis which links with the boundary with Borno and Gombe
states.
“The insurgents stormed that town and were shouting Allahu
Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, meaning Allah is the
greatest”, an eyewitness said.
A woman who escaped and pleaded not to be named, said the
attackers took securitymen unawares as residents fled.

Obi commends Jonathan over reduction in petroleum pumpprice

Former Governor of Anambra State and Deputy Director
General (South) of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National
Campaign Council, Mr. Peter Obi, has commended President
Goodluck Jonathan for slashing the pump price of petroleum
products.
Obi made the commendation yesterday during a chat with
journalists.
Calling on Nigerians to reciprocate the gesture, Obi said: “As
we commend Mr. President for this epochal decision, may I
call on marketers and others to cooperate with the
government by effecting the reduction immediately. May I also
request transporters to also reflect the reduction in their fares,
so that the masses will benefit from that as envisaged by Mr.
President.”
He also thanked the president for eliminating annoying
queues, which were almost a permanent feature at the
nation’s filling stations before Jonathan became president.
Obi said he was optimistic that the reduction would have far-
reaching positive effects on the socio-economic life of the
people.
He, however, condemned those relating the deduction to
politics, saying it showed their intention to always attack
every decision of government.
“In any case,” Obi said, “if doing good and being responsive to
the needs of the people in a manner as not to endanger the
life of the state is politics, I encourage Mr. President to play
more of it.”

UNN graduates 15,904 students

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will at its 44th
convocation, which started yesterday, graduate 15,904
students.
This was disclosed yesterday by the Vice Chancellor, Prof.
Benjamin Ozumba at a pre-convocation press conference held
at the Enugu campus of the university.
He disclosed that out of the number of graduating students,
those who did post-graduate and diploma studies constituted
1,676, made up of 331 Ph.Ds; 1,168 and 177 post-graduate
diplomas with first Degree programme accounting for 14,015
students and diploma 213 students.
Prof. Ozumba recalled that he had enunciated his five-year
development plan including staff welfare, students’ welfare,
environment and campus aesthetics, academic leadership and
research and academic discipline, pointing out that steady
progress had been made on all fronts.
The vice chancellor also disclosed that four eminent Nigerians
had been selected for award and conferment of honorary
degrees, including Professors P. N. Okeke of the National
Centre for Basic Space Science and Paul Iwe Akubue.

I dumped Amaechi over war with Jonathan –Princewill

Rivers State gubernatorial flag-bearer of the Labour Party (LP)
, Prince Tonye Princewill, has given reason for parting ways
with the state Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, saying it is due to
the governor’s attacks on President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Amaechi is a good friend of mine. We parted ways because
he wanted to persecute President Jonathan, which I did not
want. If you want to fight, you should fight for a purpose,” he
said.
Princewill declared this yesterday at an interactive session
with journalists in Port Harcourt, pointing out that he was in
Labour Party to move the state forward.
“I do not want the All Progressive Congress (APC) ticket
because the APC’ s agenda is to fight the president. We are
here (in Labour Party) because we want to move the state
forward. We have a point agenda, which is job creation.”
He challenged the governorship candidates of other parties to
issue-based debates, stating that Nigerian politicians discuss
persons instead of issues.
“The era of money politics has come to an end because we
have reached the stage where they (politicians) have to start
working for the people.
“We are running political discussion on persons not issues. It
is supposed to be on issues. Poverty is too much; we need
people that care.”
Speaking further, the governorship candidate appealed to the
electorate to ask the type of government the APC or Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) could produce, stating that the two
parties were the same.

Gov Elechi sacks SSG, reshuffles cabinet

From Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Abakaliki
Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State yesterday, sacked the
Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Fidelis Mbam
and appointed Dr. Boniface Chima as a replacement.
The governor said he relieved Chief Mbam of the position as
SSG on health ground. Dr. Chima, was until his appointment,
the secretary of Ebonyi Founding Fathers Forum and a retired
federal civil servant.
Elechi, who swore in the new SSG yesterday at the Executive
Chambers of Government House, Abakaliki, commended Mbam
for his dedication to service for almost eight years of his
administration.
Speaking after he was sworn in, Chima promised to leave up
to expectation by carrying out his duty diligently to the people
of the state.
The governor also announced a minor reshuffling of his
cabinet due to the resignation of some members of his cabinet
to vie for various political offices in the forthcoming general
elections.
Under the reshuffling, Dr. Ifeanyi Ike, the Commissioner for
Commerce and Industry will oversee the Ministry of
Information and State Orientation, while the Commissioner for
Works and Transport, Mr. Chukwuma Nwandiugo will oversee
the Department of Petroleum, Pricing and Distribution. Chief
Jonah Egba, formerly of Inter-Party Dialogue will now take
over the Department of Grants and Donor Agency and oversee
the Department of Economic Empowerment and Poverty
Reduction.
Also, the Commissioner for Environment, Dave Egbu, will now
head Solid Minerals Development Department while his
counterpart in charge of Border Peace and Conflict Resolution,
Chief Donatus Ajah, moves over to the Ministry of
Environment to be assisted by the current SA on Project
Monitoring, Felix Otah.
Meanwhile, Elechi has scrapped two departments of Inter-
party Dialogue and Border Peace and Conflict.

Baraje blasts Fayose over attack on Buhari, urges IG, SSS toinvestigate

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) and member of
the Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organization, Alhaji Abubakar
Baraje, has chided the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, over
his comments on the health status of General Muhammadu
Buhari.
Baraje, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ilorin,
Kwara State capital, drew the attention of the Inspector
General of Police, the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC), the State Security Services (SSS) and
other security agents to the inflammatory statements
originating from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its
candidates, particularly Governor Fayose.
He urged the security chiefs to do something urgently about
the provocative comments emanating from Governor Fayose,
noting that such comments could ignite crisis in the country.
Baraje described the statement credited to Fayose as “not
only reckless, uncalled for, but also a statement that can
cause anarchy and crisis in the country.”
The APC chieftain expressed surprise that “the statement by
Governor Fayose is coming just few days after presidential
candidates of PDP and APC signed a non-violence campaign
accord to ensure peaceful elections across the country.
“There is a limit to the tolerance of well-meaning Nigerians to
such inflammatory statements such as that of Governor
Fayose. This shows the extent of the desperation of the ruling
Peoples Democratic Party.
“Such statement, apart from having the tendency to cause
anarchy and acrimony, the PDP seems to be preparing the
grounds for violence few days to the general elections,” he
said.
Baraje cautioned Fayose “not to dare God by asking Nigerians
to chose between life and death which made him to refer to
General Buhari, the APC presidential candidate as a dead man
due to his age.”
He, however, urged Nigerians to be patient and not to take
laws into their hands, saying the PDP was already jittery
about the impending outcome of the forthcoming elections.

INEC has distributed 75% of PVCs to Nigerians –Jega

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has declared that the commission
has so far distributed over 75 percent of the permanent voter
cards (PVCs) to registered voters across the country.
He spoke at a lecture at the Bayero University, Kano
yesterday. The lecture was entitled: “INEC and the 2015
General Elections: Expectations, Prospects and Challenges.”
Prof. Jega, also a former vice chancellor of Bayero University,
added that the commission had decentralised the distribution
of the remaining cards from the local government level to the
ward level, besides extending the time for the distribution.
The measures, he explained were to ensure voters collected
their cards with ease across the country.
His words: “We have distributed over 75 per cent of
permanent voter cards across this country. But there is still
anxiety on what would happen to the remaining cards, so we
have decentralised the process of distribution of the cards
from local government to ward level. We have also extended
the distribution time from its earlier times. This is to ease the
process for people to collect their cards.”
He assured that INEC was working very hard to ensure that all
registered voters in the country collected their PVCs before
general elections in February.
He insisted that the commission would not allow collection of
the cards by proxy, saying that would lead to irregularities
during the polls.
Jega disclosed that the results of the elections would be
announced at the polling units to avert irregularities, stressing
that the results would be announced even where an agent of a
political party decided not to sign the result sheet.
He added that men of proven integrity, who would be drawn
from the academia, would collate the results.
The INEC boss also acknowledged that the number of police
officers nationwide was not enough to man the 150,000 voting
points across the country. He explained that the electoral law
and guidelines provided for three security personnel to each
polling unit.
He, however, said the police would be complemented by other
security agencies to effectively cover the polling units and
achieve the desired results.
He commended the Department of State Service (DSS) and the
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for their
contributions to the efforts of the commission to conduct
successful polls.
He stressed INEC’s commitment to credible elections next
month, assuring that the commission had taken steps to avoid
the mistakes of the past.

APC to Jonathan: Take charge of your campaign

The APC Presidential Campaign Organisation yesterday, urged
President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) to take charge of their campaign for
re-election, warning that their surrogates may plunge Nigeria
into confusion and anarchy.
Deploring a front-page cover advertisement on yesterday’s
edition of some newspapers in which Nigerians were asked to
choose between life and death, grouping General Buhari
among former Nigerian leaders who were either killed or died
of natural causes while in office, the APC campaign
organisation said, “this is the height of desperate tactics by
the PDP, which is capable of degenerating into unnecessary
bloodshed and destruction. They are choosing death for us.
This is not politics. We are therefore, asking our supporters to
stay calm and be law-abiding.”
Buhari’s campaign office, in a statement, signed by Mallam
Garba Shehu, Director of Media and Publicity said, “even as a
candidate, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has a duty to lead the
country with responsibility until May 29, when a new President
will be inaugurated.”
The APC alleged that the ongoing campaign on Buhari’s
health, using forged medical reports, and now, suggestions of
death, are reeking of plots to eliminate him (Buhari) before or
after he wins.
The party warned that “the whole world is watching and that
if anything happens to General Muhammadu Buhari before,
during or after the elections, under the pretext of X, Y, or Z,
we shall be left with no option than to conclude that the PDP
and their surrogates are to be held accountable.”
The statement further appealed to “all APC members and
millions of supporters of Buhari across the country not to play
into the hands of the PDP hatchet men to be provoked and
thereby, giving them the much-needed excuse to abort this
democracy before or after the elections.”
Shehu explained that APC campaign remained faithfully
committed to the peace accord signed by the country’s
political parties under the auspices of Ambassador Kofi Annan.
He, however, alleged that the PDP was paying lip service to
this commitment by trying to stoke the embers of hate, which
he said, is inconsistent with the commitment to peace.
The statement also advised the police, the SSS, the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the
advertising regulatory agency in Nigeria (APCON) to do their
jobs by not allowing these dangerous threats to democracy go
unchecked.
The campaign outfit stated: “Once again, the APC campaign
advises all its supporters to strive to stay above the ‘rofo-
rofo,’ which is clearly designed to provoke our supporters to
help the PDP sinister agenda to abort this hard fought-for
democracy in view of their impending defeat in the forthcoming
general elections.”
Meanwhile, the APC campaign said petitions were being sent
to Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), INEC,
DSS, Nigeria Police and the newspapers involved, to protest
the malicious death wish.

We’ll continue to tolerate Obasanjo –PDP

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee
(NWC) has said it will continue to tolerate former president
Olusegun Obasanjo despite his sustained criticism of the
party.
At a recent session with market women in the South-West
zone at his Abeokuta residence in Ogun State capital, the
former president accused the PDP-led Federal Government of
squandering the nation’s foreign reserves.
Last Friday, Chief Obasanjo also endorsed Ogun State
Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship
candidate, Ibikunle Amosun for next month’s governorship
election, as against Gboyega Isiaka, the PDP candidate.
Addressing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, National Publicity
Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, said the party would not
reprimand the former president, but would rather tolerate him.
Metuh said: “We have tremendous respect for him, our party
brought him to reckoning. We have ruled for 16 years with
achievements and some of them made under Chief Obasanjo
administration.
“So, we won’t accuse him in public. We appreciate him and
we want his support.”
The PDP national publicity scribe also dismissed insinuations
in certain quarters that the Federal Government decided to
reduce the pump price of petroleum products to win the
sympathy of Nigerians ahead next month’s elections.
Metuh told newsmen that it was purely an economic decision
informed by the fall in crude oil in the international oil market.

Abia guber: Traders, traditional rulers endorse PPA candidate

Abia State traders, under the auspices of Abia State Traders
Association for Good Governance and some notable traditional
rulers have endorsed the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA)
gubernatorial candidate, Sir Chikwe Udensi, to become the
next governor.
The traders, who trooped out en masse on Sunday, at the
PPA’s campaign headquarters, in Aba, said their decision to
endorse Udensi was based on his unambiguous transformation
programme, which will reposition Abia State as well as
enhance trade, especially in Aba, the commercial nerve centre
of Igbo people.
Toeing the same are the traditional rulers of Obioma Ngwa,
HRH, Eze Ananaba and the Udi of Ossa Ibeku, HRH Eze
Onuigbo.
The two traditional rulers agreed with the traders that Udensi
has the leadership qualities to move Abia State forward, even
as they prayed for his success in the poll on February 28.
Speaking on behalf of the 28 market executives present at the
occasion, Chief Okaka said Abia traders, especially Aba had
suffered untold harassment, hardship and neglect from the
present government despite the huge revenue government
derived from the traders.
He decried the multiple taxation and levies forcefully imposed
on the traders by Abia State government, saying these have
subjected the traders to untold hardship, forcing most of them
to relocate to Imo and Akwa Ibom states.
He also said the traders, despite being tired of their situation
in Abia State, have collectively resolved to be passive
spectators in the February 28 gubernatorial election because
they have always been sidelined and overlooked by
government after every election for the obvious reason that
they are mostly non-indigenes and have been treated so.
He stated: “Sir Udensi, you are the reason we changed our
stand not to endorse any gubernatorial candidate. They said
we are non-indigenes, treated us with disdain, crippled our
businesses with multiple taxation and levies, yet abandoned
our business environments.
“Our wives, sons, daughters and fathers were discriminated
against, sacked from civil service without compensation. Our
property taken from us forcefully and we are made to live like
slaves in Igbo land.
“But after our meeting with you in your Abuja resident
sometime last year, we had to reconsider our stand because
your agenda sounds irresistible. We have not only come here
to endorse you but also to tell you that you have the votes of
all Abia traders and non-indigenes in the state.”
The traders also cited a case where a petty trader (a married
woman with her new born baby strapped to her back) with
goods less than N1, 000 was molested in a broad daylight by
the Abia State taskforce personnel and stripped because she
could not pay her levies on demand, saying this was one of
the daily humiliations they encountered in the hands of task
force personnel.
An emotional Udensi, while reacting, assured the traders of his
full support, promising to abolish all forms of levies and taxes
forcefully imposed on the traders.
He noted that he felt their pain because it was his father who
built Ariaria market as a principal officer in the old Imo State,
adding that as the Secretary General of ALGON in-charge of
774 local governments in Nigeria, he understands what
administration entails.
He said: “Under my watch as the governor of Abia State, taxes
and levies will be a thing of the past. I will create an enabling
environment that will ensure that traders sell their goods
rapidly.
“I will rebuild Ariaria market and other markets both in Aba,
Umuahia and other cities, provide Aba shoemakers with
sophisticated industrial machines that will elevate made in
Aba products to international standard. Traders will have the
full support of the government including soft scale loans with
little or no interest rate to enable them thrive in their chosen
trades.”
Udensi noted that everything he was putting on from head to
toe was made locally in Aba, insisting that with assistance
from government, Aba would live up to its name as the Japan
of Africa.
He decried the pitiful nature of Aba and the substandard living
in the city, saying that it is a pity that the tide had changed to
the extent that Abians have become houseboys/girls to the
Akwa Ibomites, who served them in the past.
He thereafter, introduced his running mate, in the person of
former commissioner for Agriculture, Abia State, Hon. Uche
Enyioko, to the delighted crowd and donated N1million and
100 bags of rice to the traders as Christmas gifts.

Terror threat: FG boosts security at airports

Nigeria is taking extra measures to strengthen security around
its airports, particularly those engaged in international flight
operations.
Daily Sun learnt the country was making additional
investments in security surveillance and monitoring software
with the deployment of more personnel at the country’s
international airports following recent terror attacks in France
after Boko Haram, Nigeria’s major terrorist group had openly
commended the French attackers.
Nigeria’s efforts to safeguard its airports comes amid
concerns by the United States of America that all might not be
well with security situations at Nigeria’s major international
airport in Lagos to safeguard it from terrorist attacks. Daily
Sun also learnt the American government had recently
mandated a team from its Transport Security Administration
(TSA) to undertake an immediate audit of the security
infrastructure and personnel at the Murtala Muhammed
International Airport, Lagos, to ensure it meets global
standards to permit US-owned and operated flights to
continue business with Nigeria.
In anticipation of the planned visit of the team from TSA,
Nigerian security experts, it was learnt, held several meetings
with officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria
(FAAN), and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to
find ways of closing some security lapses at the MMIA Lagos.
Only last November, the TSA had drawn the attention of the
Nigerian government to some flaws at the Lagos airport
urging urgent measures to be taken to correct them to stem
any form of security breaches.
One of such lapses was the porous access gates into the
airport, which allowed just anybody (staff and non-staff) to
enter into the airport premises including the cargo sections, a
warning the Nigerian government needed to address with
urgency.
Many international passengers have been complaining in
recent months that the absence of perimeter fencing around
the Lagos international airport has seen even thieves entering
the airports to steal goods and luggage at the cargo section
from the ramp.
The epileptic power supply and poor illumination of most parts
of the Lagos international airport was another source of
concern to TSA as it noted these lapses provided enough
cover for evil minded persons and terrorists who usually hide
under darkness to sneak in weapons to strike at any target
like the airport.
To scale the TSA audit, Nigerian security experts are working
to get better illumination for every section of the whole airport
as well as boost equipment and personnel to screen
passengers and any other person entering the airport.

Agbaje promises to deliver 150,000 housing units by 2018

Lagos State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial
candidate, Jimi Agbaje, has promised to deliver about 150,000
housing units by 2018 through fostering partnerships with the
private sector and promoting sustainable and effective building
methods if elected.
Agbaje, who disclosed this at the weekend while addressing
newsmen in Lagos, said his goal was to effectively deliver
sustainable units to address the problem of inadequate and
unaffordable housing by using it as a means of creating jobs
for the people.
He regretted that out of 36 states of the federation, Lagos has
remained the worst in terms of obtaining aprproval for
construction permit to build houses, saying the current
administration has neglected low cost housing in the state
and failed to develop the slum areas in the state through
provision of low income housing and housing for the poor.
He added: “We have more slums in Lagos because eight years
ago, there was a budget of $200 million loan from the World
Bank to revive specific slums like Badiya and others. If you go
to those places, you can’t see any result. Don’t we have the
formula right to reverse the slums even with the money that
comes in? We are saying that we can have low cost housing
by partnering the private sector.”
According to him, over N4 trillion received by the present
Lagos government in the last 16 years was not commensurate
with the achievements expected of a global megacity.
As part of his goals, Agbaje said he would develop fishing and
fish processing hub in Epe and Ikorodu to jumpstart an ocean
economy, adding that that would involve the development of
Marina seafronts with supporting logistics and other
infrastructure.
Agbaje said his administration would make provision for 5 per
cent of the state procurement budget for young entrepreneurs
and recent graduates of all educational levels if elected.
He added: “The replacement of Molue buses with BRT buses
is a good initiative but the poor implementation is killing the
project. For example, BRT is gradually becoming another
Molue bus. If you move round Lagos’ major roads, you are
likely to notice broken-down BRT buses blocking the traffic
flow to cause more congestion. A megacity cannot grow with
poor transportation system. The light rail project would further
assist the easy transportation of our people and our
government shall complete the project.”
However, the PDP flag bearer promised to reverse all illegally
acquired properties in the state by some vested interests.
While describing vested interests as the bane behind the
implementation of several policies of government in the state,
he expressed his determination at ensuring that the political,
social and economic life of the state does not growl any
longer under the bondage of vested interests if elected as
governor.
Said he: “In Lagos, you may find good programmes on paper
but you will see that the implementation is being affected by
vested interest. Anything that Lagos does has to be in the
interest of what I call vested interest. So, if you look at the
light rail, the BRT is not working again because there are
vested interest factors involved.
“We have a vested interest that is affecting the social,
economic and political life of our state. You cannot have any
big project in Lagos unless you take into consideration vested
interest that is affecting our state and we are saying that it is
time to remove Lagos from this bondage,” he added.

Fuel price cut: Why marketers’ compliance may be delayed

Barely 24 hours after the Federal Government slashed the
pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), there have been
rising apprehensions among Nigerians about the level of
compliance by marketers.
However, the process, particularly in Abuja, the nation’s
capital, has recorded slow progress. Government had last
Sunday directed immediate compliance and metre adjustment
by all marketers across the country.
Though some fuel stations around Abuja city centre have since
complied and adjusted their pumps to N87 from N97, many
were yet to do so at the time of this report.
Majority of those fuel stations that have effected the directives
are mostly those owned by major petroleum Marketers.
A situation report monitored in Abuja shows that all the NNPC
mega and retail stations have complied while others belonging
to Oando, Total and others have also complied.
The situation is, however, different with the stations owned by
Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN) as
they complained that most of their members were yet to
exhaust their old stock bought before the directives.
IPMAN National President, Elder Chinedu Okoronkwo, told
Daily Sun in a telephone interview in Abuja that it was just a
matter of time before his members would comply with the new
order, stating that he has since officially directed all members
to adjust their pumps in line with the Federal Government’s
order.
“IPMAN has since this morning (yesterday) directed all
members to comply. But you know the directives came
suddenly and most of our members are in far areas so they
may not have heard of the new order by government so we
have to get them informed through our communication
means.
“We at IPMAN are, however, very grateful to government for
the decision and urged all members to quickly comply.”
Also speaking with reporters, Head of Media for the
Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Mallam
Mohammed Saidu, said the department has raised a team
of enforcers at the Abuja office and other offices throughout
the country to ensure all marketers comply.
He said the teams that were raised by the Director General,
Mr. George Osahon, have been mandated to ensure all meters
are selling at the new price.
He stated that the department has given marketers till today
for those that have technical hitches in adjusting theirs to do
so or face severe sanctions.
The situation in the satellite towns of Abuja monitored by our
correspondent shows maximum compliance compared to
those in the city centre.
In the city, those selling at the new price had long queues of
motorists while some have locked their stations and refused to
speak with reporters.
Some motorists who spoke expressed gratitude to government
but regretted that ”this was coming a little late than
expected.”

Keshi ruined Mba’s career –Amun

As Nigerian Football fans grapple with the reality of AFCON
2015 without the Super Eagles, former national team handler,
Fanny Amun has blamed Coach Stephen Keshi for ”killing” the
career of Sunday Mba, the team’s hero at the last edition of
the tournament in South Africa.
In an exclusive television interview with Hotsports in Lagos,
Amun said: ”If you are given an assignment, confidence is
repose on you, whether is technical, administrative, financial or
what have you. On Mba’s issue who has killed Mba’s career ?
The coach killed Mba’s career . I’ll say it from anywhere.”
” If you are given any responsibility, you must be neutral, you
must be fair , you must be sincere, you must be genuine, you
must look at the course of somebody.”
Mba, who currently plays for French second division side
Bastia was sidelined from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and
the qualifying series of the 2015 Nations Cup.
On the uncertainty surrounding Keshi’s continued stay with
the Super Eagles, the former Secretary General of the Nigeria
Football Federation, believed his presence is becoming
counter-productive.
”If Keshi has left after the Nations Cup victory, everybody will
be looking for Keshi now. People now say Keshi is delaying
the progress of the team, because he has given room for it.
” He is matured enough to make a decision. Its not for me and
you to decide what Keshi should do. I’ ve told the president of
the federation, start to groom the home based team and
concentrate on their progress. If Keshi wants to stay, let him
stick there like araldite gum,” Amun concluded.

Danagogo wants competition in Eagles

The competitiveness that used to be the order of the day in
the 1980s and 1990s which saw players from both the
domestic league and foreign legion battle for places in the
team is expected to return soon if the mandate of the Sports
Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Dr.
Tammy Danagogo is adhered to.
This latest directive which was directed to the Nigeria Football
Federation, NFF according to the special assistant on media
to the minister, Patrick Omorodion, urged the federation and
coaches of the Super Eagles to make the senior national team
competitive and ensure that only the best players represent
the country at all times.
The minister’s plea came on the heels of the recent two-
legged friendly matches put together for the home-based
Eagles against Cote d’ Ivoire and Yemen where the team lost
0-1 to star-studded Cote d’Ivoire in Abu Dhabi and beat
Yemen 2-0 in Dubai.
Dr. Danagogo argued that with regular friendly matches for
the Team B Eagles, the coaches would be able to beef up the
first team for crucial matches with new players discovered as
the Eagles prepare for the 2017 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers
scheduled to begin after the on-going 2015 edition.
“If the Team B gets regular friendly matches, the coaches will
have a pool of players to select from to beef up the main
team. They have to make the team competitive so that only
the best will represent the country at all times,” he said, as he
commended the NFF for arranging the recent friendly matches,
He urged Nigerians to continue to support the Super Eagles
despite their failure to qualify for the on-going Nations Cup in
Equatorial Guinea, adding that he was sure the NFF and the
players have learnt from the mistakes of the past to make
progress in the coming months.

Eagles job: Accept NFF offer or quit, Ladipo charges Keshi

The President General, Nigerian Football and other Sports
Supporters Club, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, has called on the leadership
of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to finally put to rest
the issue of out-of-contract coach, Stephen Keshi by offering
a take it or leave it contract.
Ladipo, while addressing journalist in Abuja yesterday noted
that the delay in signing a new deal with Keshi is counter-
productive stressing that an end to this aspect will help
realign the Eagles for the task ahead.
His words: “Let those conditions as the NFF would want be
made open to Keshi, let the two parties- the employer and the
employee- put pen to paper and itemize those conditions that
will bring in a good situation that could be sustained for us to
have a good Super Eagles.
“But like I said before now Stephen Keshi needs to get
attached to one or two other teams in Europe for about two or
three months because such attachment will help him, no
matter how good he may be by the time he goes there and
stay like three months he will be a better coach and would be
able to come back and impact on the players what he must
have learnt”.
He also spoke on the administrative crisis wrecking Nigerian
football, warning those still fanning the embers of war to have
a rethink in the overall interest of the game that has effectively
engaged a lot of Nigerian youths.
“I believe that the crisis should be put to rest and anybody
that is planning to fight again is certainly not doing so for the
sake of Nigeria.”
May be he is doing so for his or her selfish reasons which we
will not want to happen. Election has come and gone we
should allow those there now to do their job, four years is not
eternity,” he appealed.
However, he has also called on the Eagles’ gaffer to head for
a fresher course preferably in one top European club.
He argued that spending about three months in a top
European side will help him update himself on the modern
technicalities of the game, stressing that such refresher course
will help him become a better coach.

AFCON 2015: Senegal pips Ghana in added time

Substitute Moussa Sow snatched a stoppage-time winner as
Senegal hit back to defeat Ghana 2-1 in the CAF Africa Cup of
Nations Group C opener.
It was a deserved triumph for the Teranga Lions, who
overcame a sluggish start to dominate the second half and
wasted several chances before securing maximum points.
Andre Ayew scored with a penalty on 14 minutes for four-time
champions Ghana and 2002 runners-up Senegal levelled
through Mame Diouf after 58 minutes.
Several neat touches close to the penalty area created space
for Turkey-based Sow to fire past goalkeeper Razak Braimah
three minutes into additional time. The much-hyped group of
death continues later Monday when top-ranked African team
Algeria tackle resurgent South Africa in the second half of a
double-header.
Both teams missed key strikers with mild malaria ruling out
Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan and a calf injury sidelining
Senegalese Sadio Mane. Experienced midfielder Andre Ayew
took over the Black Stars captaincy and younger brother
Jordan Ayew also made the starting line-up. Senegal left
Newcastle United goal-poacher Papiss Demba Cisse on the
bench, preferring Diouf of Stoke City as the lone frontman.
Concerns that the tournament in Equatorial Guinea would not
draw crowds proved unfounded for the third consecutive day
with Estadio Mongomo packed to its 15,000 capacity in hot,
dry conditions. Ghana had much more early possession and
took the lead when Andre Ayew calmly converted the penalty.
Senegal goalkeeper and captain Bruno Coundoul, who
conceded the spot-kick by pulling down Christian Atsu, dived
to his left as Ayew struck the ball into the middle of the net.
The pace of Ghana was troubling the big Senegal defenders
and Atsu almost doubled the lead midway through the
opening half. Jordan Ayew burst through the defence and
passed for Atsu to beat Coundoul only to see his shot go wide
of the far post.
The frustrations of the Senegalese Teranga Lions — desperate
to avoid a third consecutive first-round exit — showed when
playmaker Dame Ndoye was yellow-carded for a late tackle on
Atsu.
Strangely subdued Senegal finally sprang to life just before the
half-hour as a fierce Kara Mbodj header rattled the crossbar
and rebounded to safety with Braimah helpless. Braimah did
well to foil Diouf soon after, tipping a spectacular close-range
bicycle-kick over at the expense of a corner.
If pace was a Ghanaian weapon, height was an equally potent
attacking threat for the Senegalese and it produced an
equaliser just before the hour mark. Diouf headed a cross
against the woodwork and reacted quickest to nod the
rebound into the net and reward early second-half Senegal
pressure.
The Stoke sharp-shooter should have scored again midway
through the second half, but blazed over from close range
when Ghana failed to clear a corner. With ten minutes left,
Diouf spurned another good chance to break the deadlock as
he pulled a shot wide after breaking through the middle.

Between change and continuity

A giant electronic billboard with full portrait of the Presidential
candidate of the All Progressives Congress,Gen.Muhammadu
Buhari in Igbo traditional attire is mounted near the old gate
of Emmanuel College on Douglas road,Owerri, the Imo State
capital. It draws your attention. The words of the billboard
reads:”If anything goes wrong,I will take responsibility,and I
will fix it.That is what it takes to lead”.The message is all
about “Change”.What manner of change is APC talking about?
Perhaps a disruptive change, some pundit say.
On ther hand, major roads in the Imo State capital and across
the country are flooded with posters of President
Jonathan .The message on the President’s posters is
succinctly clear.One reads,”Support GEJ”. It’s about
continuity.Another message says :”if you have Gooluck, you
don’t need change”.That’s a call for continuity in the
President’s transformation agenda.Between Change and
Continuity, the difference is clear.
Heated arguments have become commonplace these days at
many popular points, markets, newstands, drinking pubs and
offices across the country. It’s a reflection of the divergent
opinions about the forthcoming elections, beginning with the
Presidential election.
Such is the hard choice facing over 68 million voters that are
expected to determine the fate of the two main Presidential
contenders. In this election, there are critical moments of truth
we cannot run away from. That raises the stakes even higher
than at any time in our election history.
For a President seeking re-election at such critical moment
could be a burden. But Jonathan has a lot to his credit going
into the election. So,how can the voters make the right
decision? I believe the record of accomplishments of each
candidate will play a major part on how voters cast their
votes. A lot of people are already asking, and with some
justification:Can Buhari be trusted to lead Nigeria and bring
about the “change” he is asking the electorate to make on
February 14? Trust involves presenting the facts before the
people in a coherent manner that people can see and
believe, just as politics requires that those who seek public
office should define themselves and where they stand on
important issues that affect the lives of the people.Buhari says
he has a vision of change in Nigeria. It’s centred around
combating corruption, insecurity unemployment and revamping
the economy. However,at every campaign rally,he has failed to
articulate coherently how he intends to bring this “change”
about. When he talks about change, his body language seems
to suggest taking the reins of power by force. He has also
threatened to clamp corrupt politicians into jail as part of that
change. And this sounds rather scary. The images and pains of
that period that he was in power still troubles the mind.Has
the leopard changed its skin? Public perception about Buhari,
and indeed, APC calls forth apprehension in the land. Key
questions in this election include: between Jonathan and
Buhari, who has a better vision for Nigeria?.Who can connect
more with the people, dispel their doubts and inspire them to
pursue their dreams? Who between the two has a more
realistic vision and a better record to run on? It is a fact that
the power to achieve results is always there for any leader to
use.The problem is how to apply this power to achieve
maximum result for the common good.
It must be said that the President Nigeria needs must be a
strong advocate of the rule of law and a committed
democrat, not a head-strong, wilful President. Buhari to me is
still unlearned in the nuances of democracy. So far, there’s no
assurance from him or his party that if given power he will not
be a sectional President. He has done little in this campaign to
convince Nigerians he has changed from the Buhari we knew
as a military Head of State or the man who in his previous
failed presidential attempts had incited his supporters to
resort to violence. This, in my opinion is where the odds
favour President Jonathan. He has said repeatedly that his
ambtion does not worth the blood of any Nigerian. That’s the
mark of a statesman, thinking beyond self. One thing is
clear:”The Presidency is not a prize to be won,but a duty to
be done”.These are the words of ex-U.S President,Gerald
Ford.Therefore,President Jonathan,more than any other
Presidential candidate is coming into the election with a
record of performance. The record is one of progress, not
platitudes. It is a record of accomplishments which he should
be proud to run on.This is what statisticians call “selection
bias”.It’s an advantage Jonathan has over his main
challenger.
In that respect, there are so much that President Jonathan
should be proud of.These can be found in many sectors.
But,first, the President should resist the urging of some
campaign advisers to go on the offensive and make Buhari the
main issue of the campaign. That will distract from the issues-
based campaign Nigerians expect in the elections. So far,the
President has refrained from making Buhari’s age,his alleged
health condition or the controversy over his academic
qualification campaign issues. Doing so will be of little
importance.
But as said ,Jonathan has a record of performance that can
get him re-elected.This is regardless of the security challenges
in the North . The present insecurity predates Jonathan’s
administration. It needs the cooperation of all to defeat the
Boko Haram insurgents.Good performance remains the key
any President can use to lock up any challenger. The
achievements of Jonathan in the last four years have been
grossly under-reported.I have said this before:I am not
playing politics when I say these things. It is giving due to one
who deserves it.I see President Jonathan as a humble,
rational and result-oriented,transformational,listening leader
who prefers that his accomplishments speak for him. The
problem however is that the opposition party,APC has
mischievously chosen to see the President as an
Alchemist, someone with an extraordinary capacity to deal
simultaneously with many complex situations at multiple
levels at the same time.He cannot be.
The truth is that power makes good works possible. As one
writer puts it,”power brings love and gratitude which then
provides the inspiration and vitality for further works”. But
some people have deliberately refused to acknowledge and
appreciate the administration’s accomplishments.That’s bad
politics. It will be unfair not to admit that, on a scale of
performance, this President has done more than his two
immediate predecessors in office. These are evident in the
areas of social infrastructure like road network, rail system, oil
and gas sector, healthcare, education, just to mention a
few. These achievements are not photo-shopped or internet
make-believe.They are real. The economy is in straits, no
doubt, but despite the current falling oil prices,Nigeria remains
the largest economy in Africa, measured by Gross Domestic
Product(GDP).Also in education, our universities and tertiary
institutions have received a boost through generous financial
interventions that have impacted on our higher institutions. I
am particularly impressed with the “Almajiri” education
programme aimed at improving access to education and
reducing the number of out-of-school children in the North. It
is one initiative that no previous government thought about.
This is the first time in as many years that petroleum products
are readily available to consumers.Only yesterday, government
reduced the pump price of fuel to N87,from N97 per litre. In the
power sector,no previous administration has done . Experts
have also hailed reforms in the agriculture sector as one of
the diversification efforts of theeconomy beyond oil.Everything
seems to point to food sufficiency soon if government
maintains the momentum. Available statistics from the Federal
Ministry of Agriculture, indicate that the sector is currently the
largest contributor to the non-oil sector. For
example, government’s ‘cassava revolution’ is projected to
bring revenue in excess of N127bn in foreign exchange every
year. In the public sector, the Integrated Personnel and
Payment Information System(IPPIS),a biometric innovation
introduced in 2011 is said to have drastically reduced
corruption in the public service.Billions of naira is reported to
have been saved.
These are records President Jonathan can run on and
win. But,the President must work harder to restore confidence
in the populace.

Ejike Mbaka: Need for caution

In his New Year prophetic message to the nation, Rev. Fr.
Ejike Mbaka, threw what could probably be described as a
bombshell. The fiery priest openly canvassed the rejection.
The Rev. Fr. requested the president and Commander-in–
Chief of the Nigerian Federation to step down for his
accumulated failure in governance in the past six years. He
also had harsh words for men of God, who hobnob with those
in power for selfish reasons. Ever since the message became
public knowledge, there have been mixed reactions.
Expectedly, apologists of Jonathanism have taken the front
burner, lashing the Rev. Fr. to no end. While nobody will
quarrel with the individual rights to self expression, convention
stipulates decorum on matters, bordering on public and
political management.
However, one point that should agitate the minds of critical
Nigerians, is whether Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka was speaking the
truth or playing to the gallery. Therefore, for any Nigerian to
jump into criticising the priest, one would expect such critic to
tell the truth of the matter so that at the end of the entire
debate, Nigeria and Nigerians would be the greater
beneficiaries. It is in view of those that I found the write-up,
“why are the clerics raging” in Broken Tongues by Amanze Obi
of Daily Sun , Thursday, January 6, 2015 most repugnant. I
know it with good authority that Amanze Obi served as
commissioner, under one of the worst regimes in Imo State
recently.
To be precise, he served the regime of Ikechi Ohakim, which
was roundly rejected by the good people of Imo State in the
last general elections. One was, therefore, not surprised the
way and manner Amanze Obi reacted to the Mbaka prophetic
message. Don’t forget that Ohakim’s regime had a hell of
time, fighting the catholic Church in Imo State, which
eventually led to its trouncing in the election. So, the anger in
Amanze Obi could not be far-fetched but in so doing, he
should realise that as a columnist, he owes it to the public to
be objective and sincere in his analysis. In his write-up,
Amanze Obi threw caution to the winds. He became too
unprofessional, too personal and down right an attack dog of
the Presidency. Hear him: “I am embarrassed that we have
Catholic priests of Mbaka’s mould. In the Catholic Church, we
do not know our priests to be frivolous and worldly. The laity
know and see them, as their spiritual guide.” The question,
therefore, is how has Mbaka become frivolous and worldly
because he delivered a prophetic message packed and loaded
with truth and reality for which most Nigerians are aware and
appreciate.
Again, hear Amanze Obi: “Anybody who had any modicum of
respect for this priest would have lost it when he lied to his
congregation that Ikedi Ohakim as governor of Imo State,
flogged a Catholic priest. I was so ashamed that a Catholic
priest could be so reckless and unguarded in his utterance.”
Much as I would not begrudge Amanze Obi for recalling his
difficult experiences in government due to poor management
approach, perhaps, it will be reasonable to remind him that
the same Ikedi Ohakim he is defending has had cause to visit
the CKC Parish of Rev. Fr. Mbaka, after he left office for
service and blessings. There are so many issues he raised
that are not worthy of mention here but one thing that stands
out is that Amanze Obi never raised or reacted to the
message sent out by Mbaka, rather he was busy attacking the
person of Mbaka. I don’t think he is doing his readers any
good by leaving the substance and chasing shadow. Amanze
Obi himself was part and parcel of a discredited government
that was roundly rejected by the people of Imo State;
therefore, his anger is not surprising. Rather than attack the
messenger, Amanze Obi will do better to attack the message. I
crave the indulgence of our so-called columnists in this
country to always look before they leap.
Come to think of it, Rev. Fr. Mbaka did not mince words nor
was he apologetic about asking Nigerians to vote for a leader,
who can tackle the country’s many challenges. He went ahead
to itemise them and these are facts and problems really facing
the country. One had expected apologists like Amanze Obi to
debunk the issues raised rather than dwelling on areas that
are common knowledge to all of us. One wonders how in this
digital year of corruption in Nigeria, Catholic priest would only
wake up, conduct services as at when due and go to sleep
without showing concern for the socio-political situation in the
country. It is evidently clear that Rev. Fr. Mbaka is not only a
Catholic priest but a benefactor and philanthropist of a first
order. This is a priest who occasionally moves into public
hospitals to offset bills of sick patients, offer scholarship to
indigent students and offer jobs to unemployed graduates in
the society. He has by sheer dexterity and God-given
determination, touched a lot of lives in the society; that is why
he has transformed into an enigma of a sort. He is a man of
truth and abhors injustice in all ramifications. And those of us
from Enugu State are lucky to have him in our midst because
he has become the voice of the voiceless and defender of the
defenceless in our state.
The bible is replete with prophets whom God sent to speak to
those in positions of authority. It is unfortunate that in Nigeria
today, you have so many men of God (so- called), who
romance with those in power only to come and tell their
followers to continue to pray for them. We no longer need lily-
livered men of God. We need the Mbakas of this world to help
us speak to men in power. We have no apologies to those
who think otherwise.

PPPRA explains how N87 pump price of petrol was arrived at

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA,
has given insight into how it arrived at the new petroleum
pump price of N87 per litre, asserting that it was informed by
components of the prevailing petroleum products pricing
template.
This pricing template indicates the ex-depot price, which is
the price that marketers of the product are to pay for products
they lift, and the expected open market price of petroleum
products.
Disclosing this on Monday, the Executive Secretary of PPPRA,
Farouk Ahmed, explained that based on the landing cost of
N74.35 per litre of PMS as at the close of business on Friday,
January 16, 2014, the addition of distribution margin of
N15.49 per litre would translate to an open market price, or
pump price of N89.84 per litre.
He held that the price is actually N2.84 higher than the N87
per litre approved by the Federal Government and announced
on Sunday by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs.
Diezani Alison-Madueke.
As such, he drew the attention of Nigerians to the fact that
the Federal Government would still be subsidizing the new
petrol price by N2.84 per litre.
The PPPRA boss then charged marketers to adhere strictly to
the new price regime, stressing that his agency would work
with the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR to enforce
compliance to ensure that consumers benefited fully from the
new review.
While threatening that, “any violation of the prevailing price
regime shall attract appropriate sanctions,” the agency
advised Nigerians to avoid all forms of panic-buying, assuring
that there are enough products in all depots across the
country.
