Boko Haram attacks: Atiku holds pressconference, says situation is grave

Former VP Atiku Abubakar who is from
Adamawa state, one of the worst hit by Boko
Haram, held a press conference today
November 3rd at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in
Abuja where he addressed the attacks of the
sect members on Mubi and other towns in
northern Nigeria. Atiku described the current
situation as grave and appealed to the
international community to come to Nigeria's
aid. Full text of his speech after the cut...
Gentlemen of the Press:
It is with deep regret that I came to learn that
Mubi, which is one the largest towns in
Adamawa State of northeast Nigeria, has been
taken by the terrorist group commonly known
as Boko Haram. As you may know, in recent
weeks and months, Mubi has been a town to
which displaced persons from further north
have fled for safety after their communities fell
to Boko Haram. As I speak, the inhabitants of
Mubi, together with those who went there for
safety, find themselves at the mercy of this
terrorist group.
I am Nigerian. I believe in the integrity of
Nigeria as a whole, and every part of this
country matters to me. But I was born and
bred in the northeast. So, please, excuse me
if I should say a few words about the part of
the country where I am from, about what the
people from the northeast of Nigeria have had
to suffer for far, far too long.
Things should never have got to this stage.
Thousands of Nigerians have had to flee their
homes. Their houses and farms have been
destroyed. They do not know where to go or
how to restart their lives. That is the degree
to which we have come in this country. I say
this with reluctance and with shame. The
situation in which we find ourselves today is
grave. Much of Borno, and the north of
Adamawa and Yobe states is already at the
mercy of the terrorists. It started a few
months ago with Bama, which is nearly 400
kilometres from Yola, capital of Adamawa
State.
The next major town to be taken by terrorists
was Gwoza, where a terrorist caliphate flag
has long been hoisted. Smaller towns near
Gwoza such as Pulka and Limankra are
equally not free. Next was Madagali. The
town is still being occupied. Then fell Gulak.
Next was Michika, then Bazza. Next was the
twin town of Uba which is half Adamawa and
half Bornu. Its neighboring town of Lassa was
also overrun. Uba was the latest town
captured before the terrorists trampled on
Mubi. People from these troubled areas are
now pouring into Yola for safety.
As somebody who hails from Adamawa State,
you can appreciate why I feel such emotion at
the fate of my people. For whatever reason,
our defence forces are unable to cope and
unable to defend. My sympathies go out to
the soldiers who find themselves in a situation
not of their making. This is a crisis of
leadership.
We were told that the budget for security was
going to be enlarged so that the security
agencies and military would be in a better
position to tackle the insurgency. How is it
possible that a great nation like Nigeria
should find itself in a situation where a
handful of terrorists is able to invade a town
as large as Mubi with a population of about
300,000? How were the insurgents able to so
easily take a town of this size, and the people
find themselves defenseless and undefended?
How is it that the people have been made to
suffer as they have?
I have previously spoken about the
deteriorating security situation in this country
on a number of occasions. On those occasions
I deliberately restrained myself from speaking
in a manner that might be construed as
distracting the government and the security
forces as they grappled with the dire security
situation. But the scale of injustice the people
of Nigeria are suffering has reached a stage
where I am obliged to amplify my concerns.
Many of our citizens, unable to come to terms
with why a so-called “Africa’s best army” has
been unable to confront this horrendous
situation, are increasingly assuming that this
whole thing is about electoral politics. They
suspect that the seeming inability of the
government to end the crisis is a ploy to
weaken some parts of the country ahead of the
2015 elections. Can we, in all honesty, blame
them for having those suspicions?
I call upon the international community to
help us. I am making a special appeal to
countries with sufficient knowhow and
experience in tackling terrorism to increase
their assistance to us.
The relief agencies that are already working
here should please double their efforts. And
all people of goodwill should help in any way
they can and to do more than they have been
doing to alleviate the pain and suffering that
we Nigerians face through this insurgency. At
a time when we are constantly bombarded
with horror stories of ugly events elsewhere in
the world – here in West Africa, we are faced
with the Ebola epidemic and other trouble
spots – I draw your attention to a
humanitarian crisis which is also a matter of
international security.
This Boko Haram insurgency has been with us
now for several years but has, in these last few
days, taken a step further towards being a
disaster of unimaginable proportions.
Hundreds of thousands of people are at risk.
Nigeria needs the world’s support. The world
must not abandon Nigerians in our time of
need.
Thank you.

Russia dismantles Apple statue after CEOcomes out as gay

I said it when Apple CEO Tim Cook came out
as gay that there might be consequences,
unfortunately it has started. A human-sized
iPhone statue featuring a screen that displays
a photo and video tribute to Apple Inc founder,
Steve Jobs, which was erected in St
Petersburg, Russia in 2013, was dismantled by
the people who put it up, a day after Apple
CEO, Tim Cook, came out as gay.
The Russian group of companies that erected
the monument released a statement today
saying it was taken down on Friday Oct. 31st,
because they needed to abide by 'a law
combating gay propaganda". Whatever that
means. I guess more to come...

Stephanie Coker: Which Do You Prefer? Braids or Weaves?

So we all know African women are quite versatile with their hairstyle choices. We could rock a good bob, a perm, twists, afros, “didi”, Ghana weaving, dreadlocks, long and short weaves and of course braids.
We love to look good; it boosts self-confidence and generally makes us feel great about ourselves.

Personally, I love a good weave. I like to play around with waves and curls, tints and highlights. Other times, I like to mix things up a bit and opt for well-made braids or twists: those long, well-made twists that you can tie up in weird ways and look utterly stunning with (who doesn’t want to look like an African Queen?!) There is also the kinky type I admire on so many women but don’t think I could ever pull off.
There are pros to both hairstyles. I’m sure many women would agree with me that fixing a weave is a lot less tedious than getting hair braided. It takes a lot of patience to sit for four hours (at least!) with people pulling and tugging at your head all to get your hair done. However, there is no denying that braids are a lot easier to maintain: you need not worry about brushing or curling or straightening; you just tie them up and you’re good to go.
A thought occurred to me: what do the menfolk think about it? I decided to find out what our admirers (the men!) think about our hairstyle choices by asking which they preferred: braids or weaves.
I spoke to a number of men and even took a poll. The comments came rolling in and as it turns out, most of them actually prefer braids. Going ahead to ask why, the reasons given were quite interesting. I’ll list some of them below:
1. Braids are neater and tidier; you don’t have strands of hair falling in your food and on the floor with braids.
2. They last a lot longer and actually look better with age. The tacking of weaves could come off and become misshapen, and then the woman would have to go to the hair salon to get it fixed.
3. Braids make a woman look more confident in her own beauty.
4. Braids don’t clog the bathroom sink like weaves do.
5. They look more natural; more African.
6. They’re totally hot!
A few men (and I’m sure women too) are of the opinion that wearing a weave is born of the need to adopt a more Western look, rather than embrace African ethnicity. I won’t go into this though.
Some men spoke for #TeamWeaves. They gave their reasons too:
1. Weaves give a woman an air of sophistication and make her look glamorous.
2. Good weaves are infinitely sexy.
3. Weaves are versatile; you could do a lot with them. You could wear your hair straight or curled, long or short. You could give it highlights or a tint in many different colours (red, gold, blonde, blue, black, auburn, etc). Braids look weird and almost ratchet (*gasp*) in unnatural colours.
4. Weaves are suitable for any occasion.
5. There are weaves to suit any woman but not all women look good in braids.
Of course, there is the category of men who really don’t care either way, as long as the woman looks great.
You are probably now wondering, “why then the craze for expensive weaves?!” They are a good investment, since you can re-use your weave quite a number of times if maintained properly. The conclusion I came to after my (philosophical) pondering was that although the majority of Nigerian men certainly prefer braids, women would ultimately fix themselves up however makes them feel most comfortable and beautiful. For now, it’s #TeamBraids 1 – 0 #TeamWeaves.
What do you guys think though? Do you prefer: braids or weaves?

N15 Million Fraud: Ex Bank Manager Remanded in EFCC Custody

EFCC Bella Naija
An Ikeja High Court on Monday remanded a former Oceanic Bank manager, Efe Egube, in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N15 million fraud.

Justice Olutoyin Ipaye remanded the 39-year-old defendant in the custody of the anti-graft agency after his arraignment alongside his company, Ocean Energy Trading Services Ltd.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant would remain in custody pending the ruling on his application for bail fixed for November 12th.
Egube, who lives at No. 2b, Ogalade Close, Victoria Island, Lagos, is facing an 18-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretences.
The EFCC counsel, Ben Ubi, said Egube committed the offences between July 2007 and March 2008 while he was the manager of Oceanic Bank, Eleganza Branch in Apapa, Lagos.
Ubi said he obtained money in various installments from Sanisu Kamba and his company, Aminu Gandi Petroleum Ltd.
He said the defendants claimed the money represented part payments for the supply of petroleum products to the complainants.
According to him, Egube after obtaining the money failed to supply the products as agreed.
Ubi said the offences contravened Section 1(3) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006.
NAN reports that the offence of obtaining money on false pretences attracts a maximum of seven years imprisonment on conviction.
Egube, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Lagos Court Jails Youth Corps Members & 2 Others for Visa Scam

nysc
An Ikeja High Court on Monday sentenced a National Youth Service Corps member, Helen Bando, to one year imprisonment for using forged documents to process an Indian visa.

The judge, Justice Olutoyin Ipaye, also jailed her accomplices – Samuel Obiakor and Segun Alimi — one year each.
She sentenced the trio after they pleaded guilty to the charge during their re-arraignment by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendants had entered a plea bargain with the ICPC.
According to the deal, each of the defendants will pay a N50, 000 fine and will be sentenced to a maximum of six months imprisonment.
Delivering her judgment, Ipaye noted that Section 75 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State was only to guide the court.
She said the court was not bound by the plea bargain between the defendants and the ICPC.
The judge said the desperation of the first defendant (Bando) to travel outside Nigeria made her to conspire with the others to submit forged documents to the Indian High Commission.
Ipaye said the action of the defendants had brought the country into disrepute and could lead to the denial of visas to other Nigerians with genuine intentions of traveling.
She, therefore, sentenced them to one year imprisonment each without an option of fine on the one count amended charge.
The judge held that Bando’s sentence would begin from the day of the judgment, while those of the other convicts would commence in June 2014 when they were first remanded in prison.
NAN reports that the ICPC had filed the charge on Nov.15, 2013.
The ICPC counsel, Paul Bassey, said the defendants conspired to submit forged documents to the Indian High Commission sometime in 2013 to enable Bando obtain the country’s visa.
He said the offences contravened Sections 25(1) and (a), 26 (1), (a) and (c) and Section 96 (1), (a) of the ICPC Act...

Omu Resort denies OmoAkin was injured at their resort, threatens to sue him

You know I said earlier that sometimes when these publicists send you some of these things, you don't know which ones are true and which ones are just publicity stunts. Apparently this OmoAkin's story is a stunt...that has backfired because the owner of the resort is now threatening to sue him.According to a story released last night by music star OmoAkin's management, they claimed he was attacked by some animals at Owu Resort and is receiving treatment at the Peninsula Hospital
Well, the management of the resort have reacted and they say it's 100% false. They have released a statement saying no one was injured at their resort & that they even went as far as Peninsula Hospital to check if OmoAkin was there, he wasn't! See their statement after the cut...

The attention of the management of Omu resort has been drawn to a storyline on your blog ostensibly based on a report of injury sustained by a person called omoakin.
This story is COMPLETELY FALSE AND CAN NEVER BE SUBSTANTIATED.
Our staff are currently enroute the Pennisula Hospital to meet with the gentleman in question as well as hospital representatives.  We shall update you on the results of the meeting as well as further developments. (They later called LIB to say OmoAkin wasn't at the hospital and gave us an MD's number to confirm from) Knowing this is an attempt at cheap publicity (based on a COMPLETE FALSEHOOD), we have this morning instructed our lawyers to sue the said gentleman for damages. A copy will be forwarded to your offices.

Aviation: Shortage of indigenous aeronautical engineers worries operators

Picture 746A shortage of indigenous type-rated aeronautical engineers in Nigeria’s aviation sector is creating problems for operators who lament the huge foreign exchange invested to hire and maintain expatriates and the attendant capital flight deficit to the country’s economy.

Josiah Choms, Managing Director of Caverton Helicopters and Chiyere Totti, Manager Aircraft Registration and Air Worthiness at Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) who spoke in Lagos recently said there was the need for the industry to make fresh investments in the hiring and training of young Nigerian engineers with the requisite skills to carry fix mechanical and engineering flaws in aircraft in-country rather than in foreign maintenance hangers.
The local content law which mandates such training in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry is also being enforced in the aviation sector and both Choms and Totti stressed the need for airline operators to look in-country first before going offshore to hire aeronautical engineers.
“There is a shortfall in the pool of type-rated engineers in the country,” lamented Choms, who also announced that Caverton Helicopters had recently invested massive funds in the training of about 15 Nigerians as helicopter engineers by Reh Helicopters Limited of United Kingdom.
“We have to invest in training indigenous staff so that we do not have to spend scare foreign exchange recruiting staff from all over the world. In this way we build indigenous capacity and also stem capital flight from Nigeria,” Choms added.
According to the Chairman of Caverton Helicopters, Mr. Adeniyi Makanjuola, investments in the manpower training of aeronautical engineers was part of the key requirement or essence of the Nigerian government local content law.
“By collaborating with renowned training providers to deliver in-country training and having the oversight of the NCAA, Caverton has demonstrated that it is an innovative company that can adequately adapt the business to meet changes in the operating environment,” Makanjuola said.
“We are proud to say that we are contributing to the pool of training of indigenous workforce for the benefit of the company, the aviation sector, and the Nigerian economy,” he added.
Totti, who spoke at a reception for the new AW139 type-rated helicopter engineers in Lagos said most air accidents could be clearly avoided in situations where competent engineers are hired and trained to issue the mandatory airworthiness certificates for aircraft prior to their take-offs.
One of the fresh engineers, Joel Alabi commended Caverton Helicopters for the huge investment on their training saying the addition of manpower capability to the industry would go a long way in stemming the problem of capital flight as well as assisting the government realise its local content law aspirations.

Osun PDP appeals to Aregbesola over school uniforms

Governor-Rauf-AregbesolaOsun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Governor Rauf Aregbesola to look into the plight of the newly admitted high school students in the state, who have not been able to get the common uniforms introduced by his administration.

The PDP said its investigations revealed that clothing for high school uniforms was not available in the state and the majority of the new students, who had not got the uniforms, were being daily locked out of school promises.
The party accused Aregbesola of making the students to suffer unjustly because of his ‘obnoxious’ education policy, stressing that this “should be source of worry and concern to any government that is not on prolonged leave.” It advised the government to either reverse the common uniforms for all public schools’ policy or make the uniforms available “even if parents will have to pay more than about N2,000 per one that is being charged now.”
In a statement issued yesterday by the Osun PDP spokesperson, Prince Diran Odeyemi, copies of which were made available to newsmen, the party also observed that since students resumed for 2014/2015 academic session, textbooks had not been made available to them, while “over hyped, error-filled Opon Imo tablet of knowledge have been withdrawn from schools.

Anambra PDP crisis: INEC writes party, recognises Oguebego as chairman

INEC-Attahiru-JegaThe leadership crisis rocking Anambra State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be over as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has written to indicate the faction it recognises.

The commission’s letter dated October 23, 2014 with reference number INEC/LEG/ LM/ AN/04/V/540 and addressed to the national chairman of the party, said it would only deal with the Ejike Oguebego-led executive committee of the party.
The letter entitled: “Re: Current Status of the Leadership of Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State,” was signed by the commission’s Secretary, Musa Adamu.
The Oguebego-led executive was believed to be loyal to the Chief Chris Uba faction of PDP in the state.
The letter, which was acknowledged by PDP national secretariat in Abuja on October 30, said the commission was in “receipt of several letters on the leadership of the PDP in Anambra State. Several court orders, rulings and consent judgments in which INEC was not a party were also attached.
“You may wish to note that the commission monitored a state congress of the PDP in the state at which Chief Oguebego was elected as chairman of the party.”
“Further, you may wish to note that the Federal High Court Division in its ruling of September 12, 2013 in Suit No. FHC/ PH/CS/213/13 between Ejike Oguebego and two Ors vs. PDP and three Ors ordered both the PDP and INEC to recognise and deal with the Oguebego-led state executive committee in all elections in Anambra State.’’
