Lagos Court Jails Youth Corps Members & 2 Others for Visa Scam

An Ikeja High Court on Monday sentenced a National Youth Service Corps member, Helen Bando, to one year imprisonment for using forged documents to process an Indian visa.

The judge, Justice Olutoyin Ipaye, also jailed her accomplices – Samuel Obiakor and Segun Alimi — one year each.

She sentenced the trio after they pleaded guilty to the charge during their re-arraignment by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendants had entered a plea bargain with the ICPC.

According to the deal, each of the defendants will pay a N50, 000 fine and will be sentenced to a maximum of six months imprisonment.

Delivering her judgment, Ipaye noted that Section 75 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State was only to guide the court.

She said the court was not bound by the plea bargain between the defendants and the ICPC.

The judge said the desperation of the first defendant (Bando) to travel outside Nigeria made her to conspire with the others to submit forged documents to the Indian High Commission.

Ipaye said the action of the defendants had brought the country into disrepute and could lead to the denial of visas to other Nigerians with genuine intentions of traveling.

She, therefore, sentenced them to one year imprisonment each without an option of fine on the one count amended charge.

The judge held that Bando’s sentence would begin from the day of the judgment, while those of the other convicts would commence in June 2014 when they were first remanded in prison.

NAN reports that the ICPC had filed the charge on Nov.15, 2013.

The ICPC counsel, Paul Bassey, said the defendants conspired to submit forged documents to the Indian High Commission sometime in 2013 to enable Bando obtain the country’s visa.

He said the offences contravened Sections 25(1) and (a), 26 (1), (a) and (c) and Section 96 (1), (a) of the ICPC Act...

Aviation: Shortage of indigenous aeronautical engineers worries operators

A shortage of indigenous type-rated aeronautical engineers in Nigeria’s aviation sector is creating problems for operators who lament the huge foreign exchange invested to hire and maintain expatriates and the attendant capital flight deficit to the country’s economy.

Josiah Choms, Managing Director of Caverton Helicopters and Chiyere Totti, Manager Aircraft Registration and Air Worthiness at Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) who spoke in Lagos recently said there was the need for the industry to make fresh investments in the hiring and training of young Nigerian engineers with the requisite skills to carry fix mechanical and engineering flaws in aircraft in-country rather than in foreign maintenance hangers.
The local content law which mandates such training in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry is also being enforced in the aviation sector and both Choms and Totti stressed the need for airline operators to look in-country first before going offshore to hire aeronautical engineers.
“There is a shortfall in the pool of type-rated engineers in the country,” lamented Choms, who also announced that Caverton Helicopters had recently invested massive funds in the training of about 15 Nigerians as helicopter engineers by Reh Helicopters Limited of United Kingdom.
“We have to invest in training indigenous staff so that we do not have to spend scare foreign exchange recruiting staff from all over the world. In this way we build indigenous capacity and also stem capital flight from Nigeria,” Choms added.
According to the Chairman of Caverton Helicopters, Mr. Adeniyi Makanjuola, investments in the manpower training of aeronautical engineers was part of the key requirement or essence of the Nigerian government local content law.
“By collaborating with renowned training providers to deliver in-country training and having the oversight of the NCAA, Caverton has demonstrated that it is an innovative company that can adequately adapt the business to meet changes in the operating environment,” Makanjuola said.
“We are proud to say that we are contributing to the pool of training of indigenous workforce for the benefit of the company, the aviation sector, and the Nigerian economy,” he added.
Totti, who spoke at a reception for the new AW139 type-rated helicopter engineers in Lagos said most air accidents could be clearly avoided in situations where competent engineers are hired and trained to issue the mandatory airworthiness certificates for aircraft prior to their take-offs.
One of the fresh engineers, Joel Alabi commended Caverton Helicopters for the huge investment on their training saying the addition of manpower capability to the industry would go a long way in stemming the problem of capital flight as well as assisting the government realise its local content law aspirations.

Osun PDP appeals to Aregbesola over school uniforms

Osun State chap­ter of the Peo­ples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Governor Rauf Areg­besola to look into the plight of the newly admitted high school students in the state, who have not been able to get the common uniforms introduced by his adminis­tration.

The PDP said its investiga­tions revealed that clothing for high school uniforms was not available in the state and the majority of the new students, who had not got the uniforms, were being daily locked out of school promises.
The party accused Aregbe­sola of making the students to suffer unjustly because of his ‘obnoxious’ education policy, stressing that this “should be source of worry and concern to any government that is not on prolonged leave.” It advised the government to either reverse the common uniforms for all public schools’ policy or make the uniforms available “even if parents will have to pay more than about N2,000 per one that is being charged now.”
In a statement issued yester­day by the Osun PDP spokes­person, Prince Diran Odeyemi, copies of which were made available to newsmen, the party also observed that since stu­dents resumed for 2014/2015 academic session, textbooks had not been made available to them, while “over hyped, error-filled Opon Imo tablet of knowledge have been with­drawn from schools.

Anambra PDP crisis: INEC writes party, recognises Oguebego as chairman

The leadership cri­sis rocking Anam­bra State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be over as the Independent Na­tional Electoral Commission (INEC) has written to indi­cate the faction it recognises.

The commission’s letter dated October 23, 2014 with refer­ence number INEC/LEG/ LM/ AN/04/V/540 and addressed to the national chairman of the par­ty, said it would only deal with the Ejike Oguebego-led execu­tive committee of the party.
The letter entitled: “Re: Cur­rent Status of the Leadership of Peoples Democratic Party in Anambra State,” was signed by the commission’s Secretary, Musa Adamu.
The Oguebego-led execu­tive was believed to be loyal to the Chief Chris Uba faction of PDP in the state.
The letter, which was ac­knowledged by PDP national secretariat in Abuja on October 30, said the commission was in “receipt of several letters on the leadership of the PDP in Anam­bra State. Several court orders, rulings and consent judgments in which INEC was not a party were also attached.
“You may wish to note that the commission monitored a state congress of the PDP in the state at which Chief Oguebego was elected as chairman of the party.”
“Further, you may wish to note that the Federal High Court Division in its ruling of Septem­ber 12, 2013 in Suit No. FHC/ PH/CS/213/13 between Ejike Oguebego and two Ors vs. PDP and three Ors ordered both the PDP and INEC to recognise and deal with the Oguebego-led state executive committee in all elec­tions in Anambra State.’’

2015: I’m most qualified for Lagos –Ikuforiji

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sabit Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has claimed he is the most quali­fied of all the aspirants, jostling to govewrn Lagos on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) to gov­ern Lagos. He spoke with journalists in Lagos. Excerpts:

How can you rate yourself in the contest for Lagos governorship seat?
Today, in Lagos, I am not only eminently qualified but I think I am more passionate about the development of the state and its people than anyone else that I know of. People just come out, they just think, look because Babatunde Fashola was Chief of Staff and he became governor and he became celebrated, then every Tom, Dick and Harry can be gov­ernor. You even hear of people, some jobless ones, going to collect governorship nomina­tion form as if the seat of the governor of Lagos is the same thing as the chairmanship of a rural local government somewhere. I think a little bit of seriousness needs to be brought into this whole thing.
Well, those who have followed event in Lagos in the last few years would agree with me that the seriousness that we brought into the administration, I mean the leadership of the House, the Legislature in Lagos is unprec­edented in this country. And this was made possible through the grace of God, but also with the fact that before I became speaker, I knew what I wanted for the House. What I wanted to do with that position was very clear in my mind and from day one, I set about the business of achieving that.
Today, my mind is very, very clear about what needs to be done to make Lagos a most livable city anywhere comparable to any other city in Africa and in the world. We are blessed and I know it and I can speak from position of relative advantage. I have been the speaker of the House, I have passed budgets, more than nine budgets for this state; I mean annual bud­get and many supplementary ones. I have an idea of the resources that are at the disposal of this state and I know where the shoe pinches.
I have very, very clear ideas of how to take care of the pains of common Lagosians. There are many ways of looking at it. Yes, if you go through my speech, you will want to ask ques­tions where will you get the money from? One thing is very clear to me, Tinubu started from N600 million monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), by the time he was leaving eight years after, it was over N8 billion. He laid the foundation for it to even rise higher and of course the actualiser, Fashola came to actualise the dream that was on ground.
As of today, we are in the range of 20 billion. I know if you say we are around 30 billion, you may not be far away from it. I tel l you, with about N30 billion a month, and with all that has happened so far, with the necessary right exposure which, of course, I have even in excess, we can leverage on that. We can do even a lot more. The opportunities are there.
What are your chances of clinching the APC ticket?
Concerning my chances, there is no doubt that I will win on a landslide if primary election is conducted today in the APC. I am very sure that most of our party men are very interested in seeing Lagos governed by a man who understands party politics and who is pas­sionate about the development of Lagos and its people. They know that as at today, there is nobody that can compete favourably against Ikuforiji as far as that is concerned.
Honestly, I am a lucky man. From my very humble background, I have been able to break shackles and chains of poverty. I have liber­ated myself and I know the journey has been relatively tough, but with God, everything had been made possible.
What challenges you to want to govern Lagos?
I am not someone who easily gets satisfied with modest performance. I know that with the resources available to us in Lagos, we can make life more abundant for the ordinary man in the state. We can make our little Lagos compete favourably with most of those cities that we travel to, that we run to for holidays , that we send our children to for education and for exposure.
I want to assure you that within 18 months after I am elected and I assume office on May 29, 2015, you will ask yourself again, what was amiss before now. There are many things we have left undone. I am a product of public school, but how many of us are really happy to send our children to public primary school to­day? I want everyone here to be jostling to get their wards to Lagos State public school even within the next three years and it can be done.
What is your comment on the ru­moured anointed aspirant?
There are many reasons that nobody can be imposed and when we get to the river, we will know how to cross it. Let me be very clear about it. A lot of rumours are going the rounds, and each and every candidate had been tagged with the support of one leader or the other except Ikuforiji. But a year and a half ago, someone told me one of the aspirants already had the nod of the leaders; they said he was the one Asiwaju Bola Tinubu wanted to use. I pushed them aside because I knew it was a rumour and it was not possible. After about 10 weeks or so, that particular name disappeared from the scene. Another one came up and after about two months again, that one also disap­peared, yet another came up.
I can assure you that some of the names that came up of recent cannot even go to Bourdillion to face Asiwaju and say they want to run. Yet, they tell people that Asiwaju has asked them to get prepared for the job. Do you tell people to get prepared with the words of mouth? You don’t get prepared for the job of governor of Lagos in just a few days.W e should just leave some of these stories for what they are. To me, they don’t exist. Look, the party is not a party of tyrants. I have made my intention known on Sunday and I am happy about it. You can see the crowd there, they are not rented crowd. I did not give a dime to anybody to come to that session there. So, that somebody is imposed, please forget it. If somebody has imposed, we would not need to pick the nomination form.
In your 10-point agenda, none of the programmes is new entirely. How do you intend to move forward if these are what we keep treating year in year out? Well, let’s ask ourselves the question, have these issues been treated? Have they been treated and treated to your satisfactions. They have not been treated to my satisfactions and I want to treat them to my satisfactions. I believe that job creation, poverty alleviation have not even been touched and if any govern­ment had really touched those in the last 15 or 16 years in this country, you should name the government.

Dangote slashes cement price to N1,000 per bag

In a move that will raise the stakes in the rapidly evolving Nigerian cement market, leading cement manufacturer, Dangote Ce­ment Plc, has announced huge cuts in the price of the essential product.

The new price regime an­nounced by the Group Manag­ing Director of Dangote Cement, Mr. Devakumar Edwin, pegged the Dangote 32.5 cement grade at N1,000 per 50 kg bag, while the higher 42.5 grade is to sell for N1,150 per bag.
The new prices exclusive of the Value Added Tax (VAT), represents about 40 per cent dis­count on the prevailing market price of the product which is currently sold for N1,700 irre­spective of the grade, across the country.
Edwin said the move was in line with the company’s com­mitment to the nation’s need for the development of infrastructure and to boost the federal and state governments’ ongoing efforts to reduce the near 20 million hous­ing deficit in Africa’s largest economy.
“We recognize the need for an increase rapid response to the huge infrastructure and housing deficit in the country, and one of the ways of addressing the issue is bringing the price of building materials down to much more affordable levels, especially ce­ment, which is within our own control as part of our contribu­tion to the transformation agenda of the President Goodluck Jona­than administration and the at­tainment of key milestones in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs),” he said.
Since the commencement of the implementation of the back­ward integration policy for ce­ment in the country over 12 years ago, the local production capac­ity of the product rose from less than three million metric tonnes per annum to about 38 million metric tonnes per annum.

Governor Suntai heads to UK for furthertreatment

Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State who
has been sick for a while, is returning to the
UK for further medical treatment today, a few
weeks after he returned from treatment in the
UK.
Governor Suntai was involved in a plane crash
near Yola Airport in Adamawa State in October
2012, in which he was the pilot. Since then
he's been in and out of hospitals in Germany,
US and the UK.
Chief Press Secretary to the acting governor,
Kefas Sule, confirmed last night that the state
govt had made all necessary arrangements for
Suntai’s return for medication.
“I can confirm to you that governor Suntai
would be returning to London for further
medication and the state government is
footing the bill for the trip which includes a
chartered flight to the UK”, he said.
The governor, who is expected to leave the
country aboard a chartered aircraft, would be
accompanied by his wife, Hauwa; his personal
physician, Dr Kara; some family members and
other personal aides.

German hospital.
