“I am a musician from Ikofepepe in Akwa Ibom State. We were three in the gang, but one is on the run. I needed money to launch my album, Tureke Reggae; that is why I went into robbery. I was targeting N100,000" John said when he was interrogated.
John  Onyekachi Oshomi (pictured right) who claimed to be a bus conductor said he joined the gang because he needed to take care of his family. The two were was arrested on November 21st.
"I was a commercial bus conductor. We were operating on the Agege Total-Oshodi route. I just got married, but my wife is still in the village. I was looking for money to feed her whenever she comes to Lagos; that was why I went into armed robbery. ” Sunday confessed.

FG approves the purchase of N9.2bn cooking stoves for rural women

The Federal Executive Council yesterday approved the purchase of N9.2bn worth of cooking stoves and ‘wonder bags’ for rural women under the National Clean Cooking Scheme.

Speaking with state house correspondence after the FEC meeting, the Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nurudeen Muhammed said the scheme which is a federal government initiative, is geared towards reducing the use of firewood among rural women in Nigeria.
"The National Clean Cooking Scheme is an aggressive drive to engender clean cooking culture amongst the poor rural women, to reduce and possibly eliminate cooking with solid fossil which is detrimental to health. The scheme is expected to provide 20 million clean stoves over a five-year period at the rate of four million stoves per annum, which will be distributed free of charge. It will also reduce incessant felling of trees, which exposes the country to ecological problems” he said.

The Minister said N9.2bn, inclusive of Value Added Tax, was approved for the procurement of 750,000 units of clean cooking stoves and 18,000 wonder bags, a non-electric slow cooker invented by Sarah Collins, a South African eco-entrepreneur, who came up with the idea of surrounding the pan with cushions six years ago during a power cut in her country.

He said the stoves were expected to be delivered by Messrs Integra Renewable Energy Services Limited within a period of 12 weeks.

Minister of Environment Mrs. Lawrecia Mallam who also spoke on the initiative, said the government decided to purchase the cooking stoves for the rural women because it considers cooking with firewood a silent killer.

Zayo is the next big thing -DJ Klem and Puffy T

Anybody who is familiar with the Nigerian music industry would have heard of Zayo, the winner of KOGA Open House Competition.

The singer who has finished work on three singles (Ewomo, Colored, Basia) to his name would be releasing a new single soon. The singer has been touted as the next big thing in the music industry. He is signed to KOGA Records.

Speaking about Zayo, ace music producer Puffy T, who produced his single ‘Basia’ said “Zayo is multi-talented, he is too good. He can sing, rap and write songs. He is very flexible when it comes to music. Initially I was not too sure about working with him, but after I heard him, I knew it would be worth it. The music industry should watch out for him. I can assure you that in six months, if he has the right promotions, he would take the industry by storm. We are working on two new songs and trust me; I was impressed when I heard them. He really killed those songs.  He has all it takes to be a star and he would be a star.”

According to DJ Klem, who produced his single ‘Colored’ “He is a very talented and good person. I would say my work experience with him was fun.  He listens to advice and takes to correction. I don’t think he can be compared to other artists, although he’s an upcoming artist, but judging by his talent and the fact that he listens and takes to corrections, I see him rise above his present state in no time. He has the potential and talent to be a star in the future. He is very talented.

Zayo who will be releasing Ewo Omo on Friday has already released ‘Basia’ which was produced by Puffy T. The videos of Basia and Ewo Omo were shot by Clarence.

Below is Behind the Scene clips of his video...

Al Jazeera investigation of fake doctors leads to 3 arrests in Delta state

African journalists, Nigeria's Rosemary Nwaebuni and Ghana's Anas Arameyaw go undercover to expose fake doctors in Delta State, leading to 3 arrests. Read the full story and watch the 25-minute documentary below...
In this week’s episode of Africa Investigates, Anas Arameyaw Anas and Rosemary Nwaebuni go undercover with secret cameras to expose fake doctors in Delta State, leading to three on-camera arrests.
Nigerian law forbids abortions, except in cases where the patient’s life is in danger. Despite this, Nigeria’s Fake Doctors shows Rosemary, who is not even pregnant, twice being offered abortion services from unlicensed practitioners.

Precious Johnson Chuckwudi, who operates a pharmacy in Delta State, offered to provide an abortion - and agreed the price - despite Rosemary’s negative pregnancy test, while Mr and Mrs Ogboru offered Rosemary an abortion in the dirty backroom of a bar, without conducting a pregnancy test.

The Nigerian Medical and Dental Association (NMDA) and Ministry of Health (MoH) have confirmed that neither Chuckwudi nor the Ogboru’s are licensed and registered as medical doctors and that their shops are not registered clinics. Nigerian police arrested Mr and Mrs Ogboru on camera on the basis of evidence that Rosemary and Anas filmed.

Nigerian police also arrested Charles Igudala, who operates a clinic at Dictat Royal Home in Warri, Delta State, after he was covertly filmed offering medical services and injections to Anas in extremely unsanitary conditions. The NMDA and MoH confirmed that Igudala is not a licensed and registered doctor, while Dr Alfred Ebiakofa of the Nigerian Ministry of Health said that Igudala had been a target of the Nigerian health authorities for some time, but that they “had not been able to catch him before.”

Rosemary and Anas also film other fake doctors wrongly diagnosing healthy patients with malaria and typhoid, as well using as a Quantum Resonance Analyser, a highly controversial machine of unproven effectiveness that is used to illegally diagnose - merely on the basis of tones and lights  - a variety of serious illnesses to perfectly healthy patients.

Spell of The Albino, the last investigation Anas filmed for Africa Investigates, won a One World Media Award and was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award.

Nigeria’s Fake Doctors, the third episode of Africa Investigates, premiered on Wednesday, 26 November 2014 at 22:30 GMT / Thursday, 20 November at 00:30 CAT, with repeats on 27 November at 11:30, 28 November at 05:30, 29 November at 18:30, and 30 November at 07:30 CAT.
